This morning, we packed our bags for the last time on this holiday. Both down to our last pair of clean undies we need to get home to do a big wash! We had a quick breakfast with Meredith then (mainly) Bernie started the task of re-packing the truck for the final leg of the journey. The truck had been parked out on Carrington Street overnight, but Bernie managed to move it into the lane adjacent to the apartment this morning which meant we didn’t have quite so far to ferry the luggage to the truck. Aiming to be on our way by 8.00am we managed to pull out onto Carrington Street at 8.30am. We negotiated our way out of the city in moderate peak hour traffic. At the last set of lights before the start ... read more

It was a very lazy day in Adelaide today. After breakfast we popped out to the Adelaide Market with Meredith to pick up a few items. The Adelaide Market is so vibrant and full of mouth-watering produce. There were cakes galore, but we resisted the temptation. It was much less busy than expected given it was the Wednesday before Easter which was very welcome as it made it easier to negotiate the aisles amongst the fruit and veg, nuts, meat and seafood. Later in the morning Meredith headed off to a lunchtime function and left us to our own devices. We meandered our way up to the Rundle Mall for a bit of window shopping. Which turned into actual shopping with Tracey purchasing a blouse in Myer. We had a bit to eat in the food ... read more

A complimentary breakfast was included again this morning so that was easier than organizing a self-catered breakfast in our room. Just as we were finishing up Cathy and Steve arrived for breakfast, so we said our farewells again. With daylight saving time in SA sunrise was not until 7.25am so quite a bit later than we have become accustomed to in WA. We were on the road at 8.15am and took a quick detour down to Murat Bay for a quick early morning photo of the jetty. Bernie took the first driving shift … in case there were still roos around. The plan was to change drivers at Wirrulla but Tracey was asleep, so Bernie kept driving!! Bernie pulled in at the Poochera Districts Museum for a toilet stop and driver changeover. Last night while we were having dinner Bernie and Cathy found notices online indicating that the Eyre Highway east of Border Village was closed and a detour via the Old Eyre Highway was in place. We decided not to worry too much about it last night hoping that the way would be clear this morning. Anyway, we thought, that ‘could’ facilitate a visit to the Koonalda Homestead because it looked like the detour went on the old highway to the homestead and then returned to Highway A1 via the access road to the homestead? Aiming to leave at 8.15am this morning we were packed and ready to go at 7.45am … even though all the digital watches said it was only 7.00am! With a few minutes to spare this morning before our scheduled departure time, Tracey decided that she should at least have a look at one of the holes on the Nullarbor Links. The ‘Skylab’ hole at Balladonia is a Par3, 175 metre hole. Tracey photographed the tee then walked along the fairway to the green to take a little bit of exercise before driving 500 kilometres today. Tracey took the first driving shift and not far from Balladonia we found ourselves back on the 90-Mile Straight. We stopped in the first parking bay because Bernie wanted to put the drone up to take some photographs that hopefully accentuate that it is a very long, very straight section of road. Fortunately, it was not windy this morning, so Bernie flew the drone over the highway and took ... read more

One thing that Wes did tell us yesterday that I forgot to record is that the mining staff in Kalgoorlie are not FIFO (Fly In, Fly Out). In fact in Kalgoorlie, they have a different saying for FIFO, Fit In or F Off. There must still be some FIFO though because Rydge’s guest car park was nearly empty on Saturday morning. In fact, out tariff last night was cheaper than for the previous two nights with Rydges offering a discounted room rate at weekends! Perhaps the workers who went home for the weekend work at mines other than the super pit? Another thing I’ve been meaning to mention is the World’s Longest Golfcourse, the Nullarbor Links. Before we left home, we were aware of the fact that we could play 18 holes of golf between Ceduna ... read more

This morning, we were booked on the 2.5-hour Super Pit Tour. We had to be at the Kalgoorlie Tours & Charters office on Hannan Street 15 minutes before our scheduled 8.30am departure. Erring on the side of too early we were at the office by just after 8.00am. The staff greeted us and we checked in and received our hi-viz vests and safety glasses. We were all dressed in our wrist to ankle clothing as stipulated on the website. The same could not be said of other tour participants who rocked up in shorts and T-shirts and had to return to their cars to change into suitable clothing. Seriously, the website was very clear about the dress standard. Despite wardrobe adjustments everyone was ready and on board the bus on time for an 8.45am departure. Ha, ... read more

This morning, we started at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall where the Visitor Centre is located. We were just in time to book onto the 9.30am Ruby Tourist Tram which is actually more of a bus. This tourist service nearly folded last year until the council stepped in to save it. After running it for eight months, replacing the tram/bus and hiring a driver they have handed it over to the Visitor Centre to manage and run. Our driver, Greg, then drove us around to a number of places of interest around Kalgoorlie and Boulder … with a drone in tow. As part of his introduction, he warned us that some filming was happening today for promotional purposes. Sure enough, as we set of down Hannan Street, we could see the drone buzzing along with us. We had the vehicles re-packed and ready to go by about 8.10am this morning. We drove back out to the caravan park to hand our keys in, parked the vehicles and then took the short Wave Rock Walk to view the iconic rock feature that certainly does look like a wave about to break. Damn, we should have aimed for even earlier because there were other tourists there even just after 8.00am in the morning. At least we were ahead of the coach tours visiting from Perth! With a bit of patience and some judicious cropping – and no doubt some photoshopping later on? – we managed to take some good photos of Wave Rock. We had to laugh at the Chinese girls taking posed photos. Lots of different poses! The photographer was instructing her subject ... read more

The house at Cormorant Court has been another lovely holiday house to call home for a few days on our journey … even if the mattresses were a little firm. The only slightly strange thing about this stay was the pricing structure. There was a price for the house and access to all its amenities but add $65.00 if you want sheets on the beds and towels in the bathrooms. Finally, after transporting sheets and towels across the country we put them on our beds on Friday to save ourselves the $65.00 linen surcharge!! So, we re-packed the truck this morning and then draped our wet towels over the top of our luggage. Hopefully they will be dry enough at the end of today’s travels to be able to refold and stash then away for the ... read more
