Hi, I'm Sally! I'm off to Africa for 5 weeks!!

My trip takes me from Johannesburg in South Africa, to Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and ending in Nairobi, Kenya. I am going on loads of game drives and safaris - hoping to spot the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo, and the Little Five: the antlion, leopard tortoise, rhino beetle, elephant shrew and the buffalo weaver! I am longing to see a pangolin (something like a cross between an armadillo and an artichoke), a porcupine and an aardvark, but they are all rather secretive!

I'm also going to the Victoria Falls, Olduvai Gorge, Zanzibar and hopefully to climb Mt Longonot in the Rift Valley. It is going to be AMAZING!

I am hoping that I will not be a mosquito magnet, as on every other trip I have taken in the past - remember the West Coast of Scotland???I had over 80 bites on my face alone... So for this trip I am not leaving anything to chance - loads of bug spray (50% deet), mosquito nets and bite clickers - if that doesn't scare off the little buggers, I will have to resort to full body protection and a flamethrower.

Lots of Love,
Sally

Woke at 7am and read some of my notes on Nairobi until 8am. I tried to have a shower but the water is rationed and it had all been used. I met Albert at reception, who organises trips and spoke to hom about the various things that they offered. I looked to go to the David Sheldrick Orphanage Centre and the Langata Giraffe Centre tomorow with my own driver and car. He also showed me how to get to the Musuem and the Central Buiness District and where I could get a new suitcase from, the bits of town not to [View Full Entry]

Up at 6am this morning and took down the tent for the last time - hurrah! We packed up the truck, ate breakfast and then left for Nairobi. We mostly fell asleep for the first part of the drive to Arusha but after the road was being resurfaces and we had to travel on the dust track next to the old road. Clouds of dust were blowing into the bush, covering the bushes and trees for 20-30m in a white coating. A poor Maasi boy standing at the side of the road was almost completely white with sandy dust. The road [View Full Entry]

The day was just dawning over the crater rim as I emerged crysalis-like from my tent. As I had now not showered in 2 days, I was not, however, a beautiful butterfly, more like a dirty brown moth! We left at 7am for our morning's game drive in the crater. But first we had to get into it on a long narrow and very twisty road, well track. The view was spectacular with the crater lit by the early morning rays and the mist from the forests rising up the sides. It was hard to beleive that the volcano was not [View Full Entry]

Awoke to the sound of the Serengeti awakening. Breakfast was quick and then we headed out at 7am for a morning game drive. It was cold to start off with and I was glad that I had my Maasi blanket! About 45mins went by scouring kopje's befofore the other group spotted a "leopard". With my binoculars everyone in our truck decided that it was a tree trunk! Then there was a call on the radio, "Simba, simba, simba" and we drove to the kopje mentioned. Two cubs were in a fissure in a rock at the top; one near the entrance [View Full Entry]

We all awoke early and with anticipation of a great day ahead. After breakfast the 4x4s arrived with pathetically small luggage compartments, so 6 of us endured a rather squashed journey to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. The ride was uneventful and I think we all slept until we arrived at the information centre. There were some interesting displays on how the Ngorongoro Crater had formed - it used to be a volcano that was taller than Kilimanjaro until the cone collapsed to form the crater. There was a topological map display and we could see where we were headed over the [View Full Entry]

At 8am we left for a visit to the Maasi Cultural Centre and were met at the gate by several Maasi in their brightly coloured blankets. We started off at the museum where we met our guide, Jack, a very tall Maasi with red blankets and a long wig of black hair. The first scene was of a Maasi house. A man may marry as many wives as he can afford to keep, but each must live in a seperate house, which the women build themselves. They are made of sticks and mud mortar with grass rooves. The next scene was [View Full Entry]

Awoke to the sound of a bundle of guinea fowl squarking their heads off. I couldn't work it out until I popped my head out of my tent. They were so ugly up close, but the plumage is gogous, salt and pepper speckled grey. They are very dopey like pheasents. After breakfast we headed into town for a look round. As soon as we got off the bus some guys were houndig us for newspapers, which was a new one (even the Guardian!). Ben, Becky and I went into town, where I got some more money. e bought some samosas, rise [View Full Entry]

Arose very early at 4am in order to beat the traffic out of Dar. We tried to get some sleep but we were all pretty much wide awake when a window was smashed in our truck touched another. No one was hurt but it meant a breezy ride for some. Breakfast was on the road and was very quick. I chopped up 2 pineapples but only managed to get one tiny bit to eat! Richard got stopped for "speeding" three times but for all three he presented his tachograph which showed that he was well under what they aid he was [View Full Entry]

Owwwww! We left at 8am on the bus and drove to Stone Town. It was another scorcher, but I was making sure to stay out of the sun after yesterdays over indulgence. When we arrived we had time to do some more shopping before catching the ferry. We went to the shop that Michelle had been enthusing about and I bought some presents and some bits for myself. I got a beautiful red dress and a little green bacg for myself which I fell in love with! I didnt have the money with me so I went to a bank to [View Full Entry]

After breakfast (toast again and fruit) I boarded a large dhow to go snorkelling!! I sat near the bow and lappd up the weak rays (it was cloudy), Soon we were gliding along not far from the short with a breeze in my hair. we stopped to pick up flippers and a mask and then headed to the island, Mnemba, which we would be snorkelling off. All 11 we arrived at what looked like paradise - white sandy beaches and lush forest. However we could not set foot on the island because it was private (apparently it belongs to Bill Gates).
