After getting away from the bus we walked thirty-six seconds before locating a sign stating, "Daily cooking classes" shrugging we went in to learn about the class. We were told it only happens in the evening and the guy wasn't sure about anything more than that. But he did hand us the menu to look over then stated they only cook about half of the menu since its "low season." We thanked him and began wandering up the street again stretching our legs. Pulling out the LP, I gradually flipped through to the bookmarked map for Mui Ne, reading hotel names as we wandered down the strip trying to figure out where we were in comparison to the hotel we were staying at. Every hotel we found wasn't listed in the guidebook. "It's worthless. Great paperweight ... read more

Casually, Shauna and I signed up for the 7:20am Open-Bus Tour for Monday morning. Our desk clerk arranged the whole thing telling us we would be picked up at the hotel by the bus company. By 7:25am we were slightly worried but because we were traveling we weren't paranoid. By 7:30, we began to question the whole system. And at 7:33, we asked the hotel clerk where the bus was? Over the next ten minutes we learned the travel agency who supplies the bus didn't actually put us on the pick-up schedule. But they decided to send a taxi to get us. Then they will shuffle us to the travel agency, where we will catch the bus because its suppose to double-back to pick up people near the travel agency office. The taxi driver picks us ... read more

Sitting on the corner of D Le Thanh Ton & DL Hai Ba Trung is a street side restaurant with five tables spread out along the vacant wall. Each table has five to six twelve-inch children stools beside them. If we were in a restaurant there wouldn't be chairs, we'd be sitting on the floor. It looks familiar but the sounds, smells and aroma pull us towards the tables. Earlier in the day we spied the three main dishes served. Fried rice with two eggs and a pile of meat, probably pork. A bowl of noodles topped with vegetables and meat. A skillet of fried potato, meat and egg. All served with a plate of tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce. Each person is given a baguette, chili's and limes, too. We've watched others exchange small dollar bills ... read more

Dilly dallying down D Le Thanh Ton we wandered in the direction of the hotel. Our brains drained from the market and lack of water. It's possible that sleep deprivation had started to rejuvenate in both of us as well. We walked aimlessly without speaking, looking left and right in search of nothing more than a convenience store. Rounding around a street pole Shauna bumped into a woman in a conical hat. Strapped around her neck a small box filled with hand fans. "You want? One dollar," she stated smiling at Shauna the fan flicking open. Mesmerized by the beauty in the fan, Shauna pulled it out of her hand. Wafting it back and forth the cool air flipped past her shoulders. She instantly dug into her new cast-off crumpler Sunday Bruneh bag withdrawing the one-dollar ... read more

Weaving in and out of traffic we scrambled back across DL Nguyen Hue as we reached the opposing side Shauna spotted a coffee shop, her senses heightened after eating lunch. "I just want to check on prices," she says pulling open the door. Thirty- four seconds later she returned. "They're about the same but I think they are smaller cups." We continue walking down the road then turn right down D Huynh Thuc Khang. "Two blocks more and we should be at the old market," I state. "What is it with markets and you?" She inquires. Without another word I pause in the sidewalk digging out my camera. Across the street two men are prying away at the end of a drill. They stare at each other, as I ponder how they got the drill into ... read more

After our brief stop at the opera house for quick photographs we walked through Lam Son Park landing us on a gigantic roundabout. Consulting the map we stood on DL Le Loi which would lead us to Binh Thanh Market. Or if we walked down DL Nguyen Hue towards a plethora of restaurants and shops. "Are you finished consulting the map yet? I want a bowl of Pho," I heard over my shoulder. "Yes. We can walk this way, that way, or over there. Then we just need to pick whichever Pho place suits your stomachs desires." Hopping back across DL Le Loi we scrambled past three cyclo drivers pushing to gain our attention and help us get to our desired location. "Sorry, we are going to eat," I said, not engaging with anyone in particular. ... read more

We've located the driver. Walked to the car. Tossed our bags and ourselves inside. The road out is smooth until we reach the city. Horns are blazing. Brakes squelching. People nodding. Traffic moves without traffic lights. Vehicles go off in every direction. People are crammed 3, 4 and 6 deep on mopeds. Mopeds veer in and out of cars, taxis, vans and trucks. Buses whirl past at break neck speeds slamming on horns. Driving in HCMC is a nightmare. Our driver says, "There are 5-million mopeds in Saigon." Crazy... is my only thought to this as we drift through traffic. Twenty-five minutes later he pulls up to the curb outside the Spring Hotel. A doorman reaches out gripping the door handle opening it while greeting us in English. "Hello, we are happy you have arrived," his ... read more

Okay... so I failed to actually write anything during the entire trip on this blog. But I did capture 1,700 photographs, write notes, pick up flyers, brochures, highlight pages in the guidebook and bypass food-poisoning (see Philippines trip). We did manage to go from a non-existent itinerary to sketching out a possible plan of attack starting in Ho Chi Minh City aka Saigon or HCMC. The tentative plan was drawn up to start with a day in HCMC, then head by Open-Tour bus to Mu Nei spending a couple of days in the cozy coastal town. Take the Open-Tour bus to Dalat for canyoning and relaxing in the highlands. Followed by a trip down to Nha Trang to get in our kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving. Fly up to Da Nang then reach Hue (pronounced ~ ... read more

After the raging debacle at 3:23 in the morning with the film crews on campus last night. We are packing our bags and trying to get ready for Vietnam. The two of us have gathered up all the information we possibly can about Vietnam and what it will be like for 2-weeks. At this point our itinerary is vague but we are both very excited. Shauna just how excited are you about going to Vietnam? I don't know yet but I'm not packed so I am nervous (laughter) and I don't have my clothes packed yet. And I am trying to concentrate so leave me alone. She's talking out loud to herself 'take what I need, not what I want.' Ain't that the truth. Actually, I'm fairly certain I know just precisely what I am taking ... read more

It's Friday night, and it's time to party... to send off a friend who is departing during our 2-week hiatus in Vietnam. Devin, (our neighbor) has finally decided to return to the US to obtain his masters degree. So, we decided to have a dinner and Norebong (karokee) session, to send him off on his merry way. On this particular Friday, the marketing team, scheduled a film crew to work on the grounds. In 12-months of being at EV, film crews literally work here almost once a week starting in April. And I'd say from April to December, 15 of those crews have obtained permits to work until 11pm. But since no one from the marketing team is ever here past 6pm, the film crews just stick around until they are finished. Sometimes this is 1am, ... read more
