Well I have had to make a slight detour for a couple of months to Mae Sot until early January 2009, when the rest of the team officially relocates to Mae Hong Son. This must be one of the reasons for me working in resettlement, I am definitely having enough personal experiences of my own! I have been in Mae Sot for over 2 weeks now and Jacquie and I have managed to find a 2 bedroom house next to the UNHCR office, which has security guards 24 hours. It is a really nice place with a great outdoor verandah. It is in a quieter area which is like music to my ears, after being woken up every morning listening to PA systems, traffic and people yelling or dragging furniture around at the hotel in Mae ... read more

The Loy Krathong is one of the biggest celebrations in Thailand. It is traditionally performed on the full moon night of the 12th lunar month, usually a day in November. "Loy" means "to float". "Krathong" is a small raft traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk (although modern-day versions use specially made bread 'flowers' or styrofoam), decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks etc. During the night of the full moon, many people release a small raft like this on a river. The floating of a ‘Krathong' is intended to float away ill fortune and to express apologies to Khongkha or Ganga, the River Goddess. The Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated nationwide in Thailand, especially where there are rivers, canals or sources of water, with different unique characteristics. To celebrate Loy Krathong, ... read more

This Municipal Market is located right next to my work. I have to weave and dodge through the traffic each morning, not to mention cope with the assortment of smells. At the beginning it used to make my stomach churn, especially the smell of the meat, but I have now mastered the art of breathing through my mouth and not nose as I ride through the market. I have had many near collisions with traffic being quite erratic and coming from all directions. Often I have to walk my bike through as it gets me there faster. At least I have fresh fruit and vegetables right there at my disposal and what is sold makes for great viewing as I ride past. I originally thought the turtles, sparrows and eels were sold for consumption but I ... read more

On my first day of work (a week after arriving in Thailand) they drove me down to see the Thai-Burma border and the cheapest "ferry" in the world. As I was looking out for this "ferry" and they kept referring to it, I finally understood their joke. This so called "ferry"is the tyre featured in the picture. Up on the bridge is immigration but if you want to bypass that and go between the countries you can use the ferry instead. I don’t think you will require a visa on this ferry, nor need a valid passport! The man featured with the musical instruments makes them himself and is a real character. I am sure he is a rocker from way back and he can play the instruments very well. I am currently working in Mae ... read more

I arrived in Bangkok late Friday night, October 24th and was welcomed by Thailand's steamy humidity and its rainy season. It rained everyday and on most occasions I was found in the middle of it, I wish I had packed the gumboots! The week in Bangkok was filled with orientation, meetings and preparation for the job. Our host kindly introduced us to the popular Thai culture of eating and some of the popular local cuisines. We also became familiar with using the BTS. Fortunately I managed to fit in 2 muay thai sessions at Jitti's gym and visit Lumphini park. The heat and time difference knocked me around most of the week and all of us were quiet tired most days from all of the orientation. As we didn't have a lot of free time I ... read more

While I only managed to personally farewell a fraction of the people I wanted to during my last week in Australia, I am grateful for the time I did get to spend with friends and family. The week seemed to pass by so quickly but in the short timeframe I managed to obtain my learners bike licence (which was great preparation for Thailand), go shopping for all the items I needed (many thanks to my IT consultant Ifti) and finally after arriving in Bangkok finish off my uni assignment. I hope to be back at the end of 2009 and I look forward to catching up with friends and family when I return. Farewell Melbourne, I will miss the summer but I will happily embrace the change in pace and lifestyle that awaits me in Thailand. ... read more
