So it's bye bye Burma and dust, hello again Bangkok, food, separate showers and the chance to get clean! First though we had to spend 1 1/2 hours getting through Don Muang Airport which was not fun and longer than the flight took from Yangon!! Still that was forgotten once we arrived at the Avani Riverside Hotel, omg we went from no hot water or soap and a view of a wall to 5 star luxury with a view of the river and the city, not to mention pillows like clouds and all those little toiletries etc etc, we must have looked and smelt totally out of place ha ha. The hotel was also connected to a small shopping centre, all decorated for Christmas, with ribs for tea and a Dairy Queen (that gave you loads ... read more

Another early start, this time for the taxi to HeHo Airport for our flight to Yangon. Apart from feeling incredibly sick and having to pay £3 for a small packet of mcvities choc digestives to settle my stomach, the flight was fine and we were soon in another taxi on our way to our hostel for the night. We chose the Yangon Hub as it was the nearest place we could find with fairly decent reviews to the airport as we read that the traffic was mental here. Luckily Howard had his google map thingy as he had to direct the taxi driver through the back streets to the hostel! We had booked the deluxe ensuite room so hopes were high, oh foolish me. Our room was a box next to reception, it did have a ... read more

Ok so part 2 of our boat trip Whilst tootling we saw people washing and bathing in the river/lake, monks going to their monasteries and most exciting we saw (and heard) a procession taking place for a young boy who was going to join the monastery, everything involved boats and water. Our next stop was at the Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, this was fun, there was a big market under and around the pagoda, the most disgusting loos yet and in the pagoda itself on a raised platform - no ladies allowed, lots of men were sticking gold leaf onto what looked like golden blobs, apparently there are Buddhas under it all! You could even watch them doing it close up on TV monitors. Back outside again we discovered a big procession taking place (no idea ... read more

I'm doing this blog in 2 parts mainly because I took so many photos, but there not all on here I hasten to add! Up early (again) and this time for our Christmas Eve Boat Trip on Inle Lake, doing all the touristy stuff you do when here. However as the market is being held at In Dein we are starting there first. We were met by our boatman and after picking our way across tree roots we got to our boat and with a bit of wobbling about got into our wooden armchairs and were ready for the off, it was very exciting! You travel along a canal for about 15 minutes which takes you away from the town and out into the lake proper. The lake is vast, surrounded by high hills and mountains ... read more

After being woken up by that bloody cockerel again we were up and ready for the day trip to Kakku. We had asked about doing a shared trip but were told there wouldn't be enough room in the car, oh well it's just us again. We drove up into the hills and arrived at Taunggyi, a large town which is spread over a plateau on the hill top. Here we had to stop and pay the fee to visit the site of Kakku and the fee for the obligatory Pa O guide who then joined us in the car. Our guide was a lovely lad called Tun Tun, he was dressed in traditional Pa O clothing complete with a colourful scarf tied round his head and is a 4th year (final year) university student. He is ... read more

Ok so running behind with the blog again but the wifi was so dodgy in Burma that I decided to wait until we were back in Thailand before attempting any more. So the morning of the bus journey was an 8 am pickup so we decided to get up for sunrise and watch the hot air balloons going up - Howard had already seen this from a temple on our first morning but I've always been too tired to do it!! I have to say they were quite a sight and we counted 20 balloons up in the end, so at £300 plus person that was a lot of money in the air. Our pick up was late but we were told the bus wouldn't leave until everyone was on board and luckily this was true. ... read more

We'll when I say fast.....it still took 9 1/2 hours but that was fast as we arrived an hour early! We set off from our hotel at 6.15 am and the boat left at 7. After the 'walking the plank' between boats routine, we were lucky enough to get a couple of bamboo deckchairs on the top deck and a blanket - which was only really needed to sit on. The sun was up before we set off and Howard put on his sunglasses, I did a double take and asked him where he got them from, he looked puzzled but said he had luckily found them on the backseat of the taxi as they must have fallen out of the back pack. He had only gone an acquired a pair of bloody Raybans' by accident. ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan December 14th 2016

Hmmm.....how to sum up a week in Bagan when you haven't been blogging the whole time - Pagodas and dust perhaps? Once more the pictures do not to the place full justice as it is just awesome!! Loved it here and felt I had at last found the Burma of my dreams. The military junta formed the Bagan Archaeolgical Zone (and tourists have to buy a 5 day permit to visit), people who had been living for generations in this area were turfed out of their homes and forced to move to the outlying areas. The then government allowed their cronies to build tourist hotels in the zone and a very odd watch tower with a restaurant in the top, which apparently the locals hate and does look totally out of place. All of this is ... read more

So our last day in Mandalay and we decided to have a bit of a mooch about locally. This of course involved the customary dice with death walking the streets, we only walked about a mile and a half and it took a good couple of hours, every step you are watching your feet, dodging potholes, dodging motorbikes, cars, large tuk tuks, bicycles, stray dogs and people - it's mental! We found the local market with thousands of stalls side by side selling every kind of fruit and veg imaginable and plenty I have never imagined before. All manner of dried fish, prawns and other smelly creations and pieces of wood that we couldn't work out what they were for and plenty of blankets and plastic toys. All the while motorbikes and other vehicles were honking ... read more

Thinking about it I reckon the photos tell the story of this journey pretty well, so I'll just fill in a few bits. We bought our tickets from the foreigners office 30 mins before departure and were advised to book upper class (£1.65 each) by the booking clerk, which we were more than happy to do - it was a 6 hour journey after all. The train arrived on time but we had to wait 5 minutes for the additional upper class coach to be brought along and coupled up. By now the stations busy and huge sacks of produce are being loaded on up and down the train and it was all quite exciting. Our seats were comfy and there was no glass in the windows so it was lovely and cool, I was still ... read more
