Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region December 9th 2016

Up at 6, so fell asleep as soon as we got in the car and missed the entire journey up the mountain. We arrived at Pyin Oo Lwin which is a town the British used to move to for the summer back in the day. It is also known as the Flower city And once off the Main Street there were loads of flower stalls. There is still loads of traffic. Visited the market, this is the only place you can legally buy 'poppy pancakes' as they are classed as traditional food in this area, didn't try them as apparently you need to lie down after eating them and your brain goes a bit crazy!! On to Peik Chin Muaung Cave. Hadn't twigged that you would have to go in barefoot so much struggling with laces, ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Mingun December 8th 2016

Up early again! I do not do early what is going on??! River trip today to Mingun, the lovely Peter surprised us as our taxi driver again today but just down to the jetty on the banks of the Irrawady this time. We bought our tickets from the wooden hut and spent the time waiting to board a boat just watching what was going on. There was boats moored up all along the bank and people carrying loads on their heads leaping on and off them. Motorbikes with trailers were delivering supplies and getting stuck in the sandy mud. Women were cooking up meals and men were hanging around. The tour groups and people privately hiring boats got priority and set off quickly, while the rest of us foreigners hung about waiting until the posh lot ... read more

Today we booked to do one of the tours available in the Mandalay area - The 3 Cities, which are three of the former royal capitals of the region and a visit to the famous U Bein Bridge. We did this by private taxi which was great as we didn't have to hang around waiting at all and could miss out the things like the silk weaving which we weren't interested in (only twigged this after having seen the wood carving!). Our driver was a lovely young guy called Si Thu but prefers to be called Peter much to the amusement of his other driver friends who kept taking the Micky out of him whenever we encountered them. As with most of the men here he was wearing the traditional longyi, a kind of sarong and ... read more

We are here!!!! We are finally in Burma! so excited! We nearly didn't make it mind as the super organised Howard had forgotten to print out our visa confirmation letters and they won't let you board the plane without them. Thankfully Air Asia came to the rescue and sorted it for us - phew. Despite the long queues and because the flight was slightly delayed we managed to grab a quick Subway sandwich before boarding. I ended up sitting next to a monk, who spoke really good English, I offered to swap seats with Howard as I thought women were not supposed to touch monks but the monk said he didn't mind, I desperately tried to breathe in so my flab wouldn't touch his robe but after 15 minutes I was sound asleep, but I'm sure ... read more

N.B. Some photo credits go to Debbie (big thanks) as we 'lost' our camera back in Bangkok the first time :( Phuket 28th Nov-4th Dec'16 So our journey to Phuket was not without incident, now maybe it was coincidence that the big night out on the beer in Udon Thani was the day before flying, maybe it was lack of food the day before, maybe it was a bug, but whatever the cause by the time Howard and I arrived at the airport to meet up with Deb, Liam and Karen, poor old Debbie was looking the worse for wear! Liam was flying an hour before us and the 3 of them had set off to the airport a couple of hours before us. We said our goodbyes to Liam and he set off on his ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-East Thailand » Nong Khai November 20th 2016

As I anticipated the last 2 weeks + blogging went out the window, blame it on the Chang, the partying, friends or the heat or maybe them all but I will now attempt a quick re cap. Up north section 20-28th November'16 First of all, we had an amazing time!!!!! Big big thanks to Andrea and Wan for being such amazing hosts, tour guides, food advisors, driver, clothes suppliers(!), party organisers and for enabling us to get a glimpse of real Thai life. Thanks also to Debbie, Karen and Liam for just being there and sharing the experience with us and making us The Magnificent Seven! :) We all rendezvoused in the departure lounge at Bangkok airport and flew up to Udon Thani together, at this point I have to mention the inflight snack, a BLACK ... read more

Let's just say today has been a bit of a blur...... Thank god for the almost an English breakfast at a little cafe down the road this morning, the lovely taxi driver who took us to our next hotel, for the Avani Atrium for being such a lovely place, Howard for bizarrely treating us to the executive package thing which meant free food and drink, for the taxi which stopped to pick us up in the middle of a torrential downpour this evening, for the little gold box with a chocolate in it and the fresh flower left on the bed, which made me smile :), for great wifi so I could get my blog finally up and running before the others arrive and it all becomes a blur and lastly for paracetamol - without which none ... read more

As you can tell by the title I'm well chuffed to be out of Dubai and in Thailand once more :) The flight was fine and we got through the airport quite quickly. After the sterility of Dubai encountering an insect, best not thought about in the airport loos was a bit of a shock, but I still prefer it here so that should tell you something lol. There was a poster up at immigration saying that tattoos of Buddha are illegal here - so it's a good job I haven't got one! We caught the train from the airport to the end of the City Line, changed onto something else, went one more stop, walked up and down loads of stairs and along the road until we found our hotel - Siam Swana. This is a ... read more

Arrived at Dubai after a 7 1/2 hour flight, having fallen asleep during Ghostbusters, watched Fear the walking dead and having eaten a fab meal. Despite a delay in taking off the Captain - who announed he was the best! was true to his word and got us there on time, good man. I have now discovered the advatage of being fat and not so young, it means the security guards are not interested in rifling through your suitcases! My knickers clearly do not have the same appeal for them as the sylph like young women who were being selected, we were ignored and got out quick. I had forgotten about the crazy taxi queuing and allocation system but soon remembered and some howwe ended up in a car and on our way. We checked into ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Miami Beach May 23rd 2013

21-23rd May ’13 Miami Beach Today we caught the bus along to South Beach, it took ages to get there as the bus wound its way around all the residential streets but it was interesting to get a glimpse of this wealthy area. Once we arrived in the main shopping area we hopped off and went to see the sea. As you would expect it was a long sandy beach with lots of posh sun loungers for hire. There was a path along the beach side – with no view of the sea strangely, but we passed lots of big, flashy looking hotels and got our first glimpses of the Art Deco influence in some of the building designs. We emerged onto the main road and here every building was Art Deco style and colours, it ... read more
