Back in Argentina again 7/4/13 Santiago to Buenos Aires to Cordoba Another early start as our flight was at 8.30am and we had to be there 2 hours beforehand. It only took 2 hours to get to Buenos Aires but as they wouldn’t check our bags right through to Cordoba we had to mess around collecting them and then trying to find somewhere we could leave them until our next flight at 6.30pm. We finally found out that the Information Desk could sort this and after filling in a form, waiting for a security guard who then led us through the airport to an xray machine, scanning the bags, then leading us further on and out to a tin hut in a car park where the bags were tagged and stored we were free of them. ... read more

……….back to reality The flight arrived back into Santiago at 12.30am (there is a 2 hour time difference) so we got a taxi into the city and got into the apartment we had booked about 1 in the morning. It was booked with a different company and this time it was all ok and the place was lovely. 4/4/13 Pavement pounding in Santiago Walked a million miles, through a park, onto Pablo Neruda’s house in a little side street, then onto the Funicular, which was shut until 1 so carried on walking and did a circuit of the university area. Lots of students all grabbing burgers from small stalls so we ended up with one for lunch too. Went back and up the Funicular to the hill top where you were supposed to have great views ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa April 1st 2013

1/4/13 Riding a scooter on the unscooterable roads! We rode out to the Orongo crater this morning, it was one of the roads classed as gravel and so not suitable for scooters but they hadn’t met Howard yet! The road actually wasn’t too bad as long as it wasn’t wet and you are careful. The first section was hard packed dirt ridges with potholes and the last section gravel. Up at the crater rim was Orongo, the ceremonial Birdman village, we handed over our passes and were signed in. There were lots of stone houses, which were low, with tiny doorways (protection from the elements) which people had to crawl in through and they all faced out to the ocean and the islet of Moto Nui off the coast. The terraces outside the houses were used ... read more

29/3/13 From Montevideo, Urugay to Santiago, Chile So we landed at Santiago and took the airport bus into the city, from the stop the bus finished at we then took two tube trains to get to the Belles Artes area which we were staying in for the night. When we got to the apartment complex the security guards on the gate who didn’t speak any English made us register then eventually handed us an envelope in which was a note and a tiny saying they had moved us to a different hotel. We were not impressed and the security guards looked bemused as we picked up our bags and left. The Carlton Hotel they moved us too was a couple of streets away and had definitely seen better days, the room was ok but really noisy, ... read more

27-29th March Montevideo Well excuse me for being thick, but I don’t even know what day of the week it is much less what public holiday – but of course it’s Easter and unlike in the UK where things shut for a couple of days (if that) here they close for a week! The first thing we noticed about this city is it really isn’t a classic tourist destination, it’s a working city and a slightly faded, grubby one. However there are lots of lovely small parks and some fabulous architecture, even if the buildings themselves are derelict and unused. We had a good wander around the old town on our first full day and came across a post office so immediately bought a couple of stamps, we have had to search for them in other ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento March 25th 2013

25 - 26th March Colonia de Sacramento and onto Montevideo After a final tussle with the Ibis over the bill – tried to charge us for breakfast when it was included! So I asked about the discount for the problem with the air con that the manageress mentioned, a quick phone call and caught the words Inglesia and probably loco and result – one free nights stay! and we were off again. We took a taxi down to the port in La Boca to catch the Colonia Express ferry. You had to get there an hour early to check in, which took about 5 minutes and then we sat around for an hour before we went through the immigration stuff. Got stamped out of Argentina and into Paraguay without leaving land! Then another 45 minute wait ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires March 24th 2013

23rd March ’13 BA Today was slightly less walking thank God! We took the subway (turns out it’s a public holiday and it was free) to the station then a train to another station and then the tourist train to Tigre. This was quite a scenic ride and passed through lots of small stations where there were cafes on the platforms and one had an antiques fair going on and another a craft fair. We spent the journey sitting with a brother and sister from the UK who were backpacking for 4 weeks (staying in hostels etc) and were at the end of their trip and they raved about Bolivia and had done the overnight buses and were full of tales. He had also been to central america and said if you have travelled there then ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires March 22nd 2013

21st March ’13 continued…. So eventually after hearing several thundery rumbles we decide we better set off for the bus station before it pours down, as it is a bit of a hike. We risked life and limb and dashed across the main road, bought tickets for the next bus and sat and waited. Once on the bus it did start to pour down but Spiderman was on the tele so that kept me entertained (only trouble is I will only get to see half of it…..how does it end?!) and we were given a sweet and a drink! Driving through the outskirts of Posadas there didn’t seem much to recommend itself about the place and the bus station wasn’t much better. It was tanking down so there was no point in trying to get out ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » San Ignacio March 18th 2013

18th March ’13 Puerto Iguacu Got up late, did nothing all day, it rained a bit, said goodbye to Jennifer my new Argentinian friend who was going back to college in Buenos Aires, saw lots of cockroaches, had dinner – Argentinian bbq which involved black pudding, kidneys and intestines mmmmm nice, think we are the only guests left in the hostel and went to bed. 19th March ’13 On to San Ignacio Got up, had breakfast (definitely think we are the only guests left) and said goodbye to the Hostel Nuelia. We walked to the bus station and found the stand for our Rio Uraguay bus to San Ignacio. It’s supposed to take about 3 ½ hours to get there so we had packed a sandwich for the journey but at 12.30 a packed lunch was ... read more

16th March ’13 Brasil to Argentina Once again it was very bizarre to leave our hotel in Brasil and just outside catch a bus to Argentina! Luckily when we checked out the lady on the desk spoke great English and explained to us the border crossing process. Basically we caught the public bus but had to tell the driver to drop us at the Policia National (border post), he then gave us a white slip which meant once we had been stamped out of the country we just had to wait for the next bus of the same line to come along and we didn’t have to pay again – great system. There was hardly anyone at the border post so we were soon stamped out and sat at the bus stop waiting for the bus ... read more
