Jan, the vet we knew in Samoa invited us to stay with her in Sue Shallart’s home in Tiwi, a northern suburb of Darwin, so we’ve had a very relaxing 5 nights here, eating gourmet take-aways and salads in the sunset on the beach, visiting museums, art galleries, craft markets and an outdoor cinema, getting the 10,000 km service done on our bikes and generally psyching ourselves up for the next long stretch of highway to Perth. I knew Darwin had been bombed during WWII, but I had no idea it was hit 64 times by the Japanese and that all over the north are remnants of old war camps, cemeteries and air fields.
