I’m writing this in the ghost town of Cossack, an old river mouth port used for pearling during the mid 1800’s in the far north west of Australia. It was replaced by a bigger port down the coast to handle the export of cattle before the turn of the last century and totally abandoned by 1940. . . . but there are still some lovely old stone buildings here which have recently been restored. The one we’re in is being used as a hostel run by the only two permanent residents of the town, the town caretakers. It is such a beautiful place and so quiet and peaceful we’ve decided to stay another night. Would stay longer if the few rooms here weren’t booked out tomorrow night.
