Angela and Rod Dalziel

Team Dalziel

Hello!
Angela and Rod Dalziel here. It is just under a week before we leave beautiful Victoria, BC and head off on our official honeymoon backpacking through Central America. Yikes!

The plan is we are flying into San Jose, Costa Rica and we will be flying out of Belize, 2 months later. Everything in between will be left in the hands of the fates (as well as a bit of research and advice from future travellers we will be meeting).

Wish us luck!

I wanted to say thank you to all of you for your loyalty and love and kindness over the years. We are on our way back to Victoria, but only for a week. Rod has been offered his position back in Smithers again and it is a really good opportunity for him. There is alot of room for growth and advancement in his job in Smithers that he can't get anywhere else. It is the best place for us to be at the moment. I need a home, and I need to live with my husband. It's been too hard these last couple of years not having a permenant place to live. I did grow to love Smithers last summer and am also excited for a little change. It will be exciting. All of our ... read more

So, the last we left you we were on our way to Belize. The backpacker island of Caye Caulker to be exact (pronounced key). Well, we kept reading and hearing how incredibley expensive Belize is so we were a little worried when we ended up having 6 days left there instead of the planned 3 or 4 days. We caught a bus from Flores that nicely avoided Belize City and dropped us off right in front of the water taxi. Rod and a couple of other people took off for the bank and managed to run back with mere moments to spare. Excellent timing. It was a beautifully hot day perfect for redeeming my tan on the hour boat ride to the Caye. After the boat we are now off on our very last hotel ... read more

Q: How many people can you fit in an 11 seat collectivo minibus? From the town of Coban, Guatamala we arranged a tour which took us through the depressingly deforested hills to a remote protected area. The area encompasses the gorgeous river and pools of Semuc Champey carved into the limestone rock of the area. A short hike into the park brought us along the river and up to the beautiful turquoise pools. We then headed up the steep path in the morning heat and intense humidity through the forest up to an incredible lookout high above the pools (well worth the climb). Back down to the pools and a refreshing swim and lunch. Our guide then showed us where the river heads through a limestone cave leaving the shallow and calm pools above. He ... read more

So, the last time we left you we were on our way to Guatemala. Well, we made it and spent our first night in Antigua. We lucked out and found a little hotel with brand new mattresses! Wow... what a treat! Then we booked our shuttle with them to go to Chichicastenango (Chichi) the next morning. Chichi is supposed to have one of the biggest markets in Guatemala and we have been waiting to do some shopping. The big market days there are Sunday and Thursday so it is best to go a day early to get a room and avoid abit of the chaos. So, anyway. We get on our shuttle and head for Chichi. It´s a beautiful ride through the mountains. Our driver stopped the van at Lake Atitilan so we can all ... read more

The road to Honduras began at 3am at the Bearded Monkey Hostel in Granada, Nicaragua. From there the marathon began with an hour taxi ride into Managua to board the Tica bus at 5am. A few hours to the Honduran border with the usual young, armed men digging through the buses cargo. Off again for a few hours to the Honduran capital of Tegucigulpa and an hour stopover before loading back on the bus and few more hours up to San Pedro Sula in the northwest of the country. Got off the bus here and taxied to another bus station to load onto a local bus for the couple hour ride to La Ceiba on the northern coast arriving a little after 9pm. The 18 hour travel day covered some serious ground and now overnighting ... read more

So, after leaving San Juan del Sur (along the craziest road ever!) we had our first chicken bus experience. Wasn´t so bad there actually. It was just from Rivas to Granada which was only about a 3 hour ride and the bus wasn´t crowded at all. We had heard about the hostel The Bearded Monkey a few times so thought we would give it a shot. The only problem was arriving in Granada mid day and not quite knowing where we were. Though we thought it would only be a few blocks walk. So, we asked for directions from a local and were on our way. Now, I have to mention that the Nicaraguan people are very polite and helpful. They would rather help you and give you wrong directions then admit they don´t know ... read more

Buenos Dias Mi Familia y Amigos, When we last left you we were preparing to cross the border from Costa Rica into Nicaragua. After the hours of waiting on the Costa Rica side all went well. We boarded a small riverboat filled with locals heading up the Rio Frio. We crossed over the border on the river and checked in with immigration in the next town of San Carlos, Nicaragua. Nicaragua is by far a much poorer country, one of the poorest in the Americas which is clearly evident in the countries infrastructure let alone the homes and businesses but it is a bonus for us as our money will go much further here than Costa Rica. The Nicaraguan people have been fantastic very pleasant and friendly although very little English is spoken which makes a ... read more

Buenos Dias Amigos, From Monteverde we took the crazy bus trip outta there along narrow, rough mountain roads to Punta Arenas and the ferry across to the Nicoya Peninsula and down to the little beach town of Montezuma. Stayed at nice little hotel on the beach where you can see the incredible sunrise each morning from the veranda. Have heard quite a few stories of theft in Costa Rica from travellers and I am now victim as some twit nicked my shorts that were hanging to dry on the railing of the hotel balcony (let´s hope that is the worst for the trip). We booked a snorkelling tour, with a group we met on the ferry, to Isla Tortuga. On the hour boat ride to the island we paused for a while in the middle of ... read more

So, we were pretty excited to go to MonteVerde and check out the cloud forest, get a little rain, yada yada. Well, I think this was the dryest place so far. They are supposed to have 2 seasons....wet and more wet. We didn´t see a drop of rain. Nor did we see a forest in the clouds. OK, first the drive there. It is advertised as a Jeep Boat Jeep tour to get from LaFortuna to MonteVerde. Sounds pretty fun? Well, there was no Jeep to be found. It was more like Van Boat Van. And the roads! Wow! We were driving on the side of a cliff for 2 hours. It was the craziest road that I have been on so far. The locals keep the roads in rough conditions to try to keep people ... read more

Well I guess it is my turn at this bloggy thing. Let me start with, wow what a country. With the warm climate, rainforests, beaches, jungles, abundant wildlife, relaxed Tico culture and ease of travelling it would be difficult not to enjoy your time here. With a country that is nearly 25% protected, no military and a booming eco-tourism industry it should be an example to nations around the world. As you have heard from Ang things having going well with loads of sights so far and plenty of chillin as well. Started with some beach time on the Caribbean coast and now into the central plains and mountains. It is nice to travel with no set times just taking as we wish and getting comfortable with the towns we are in. Angela has settled in ... read more
