Dad, no question. No offence to your writing, T, but a guest star livens the blog up (Paulie did such a good job), and I have no doubt that his views on Malawi will be hilarious. I'm not sure you should let Mum guest when she goes out there, it might take all day to read ;-p xx

Names and things - From: Cintza to Coffee Bay
Very amusing entry. Was your horse really called Spirt or was it Spirit - which ever makes for amusing retirement comment. Tamsin looks like she is pulling the reins much too tight on her galloping pose _Penny Baker would have a fit(our local horse expert) In Costa Rica they didn't have bits at all just ropes round their nose (I don't think my terminology is quite right!!) and they were really responsive and we didn't hurt their mouths. What is the story with the dog behind you Paul in your surf picture? Or is he just a passerby? Keep up the good work!

Knysna - From: Kloofing!
Nysner is pronounced that way but spelt Knysna A Kloof is and Afrikaans word meaning valley, but has now been taken into South African English to mean a narrow, steep sided valley, that usually has rock pools along it. (well, thats my interpretation anyway)

When I looked at the first photo I thought Oh Tamsin is holding a real ostrich but I wish she had taken a close up of the sculpture behind. Then when I blew it up I saw both were bronze. Thanks for that. What is the weight allowance for an ostrich. I wonder if it is similar to a lleama as their legs look similar. Keep up the good work Paul. Not a menu in sight!!

Viernam War - From: Cu Chi Tunnels
Simplistically I think the USA had a policy of stopping 'the spread of Communism'. In UK the anti war protest movemnent was huge with a massive march to the USA Embassy in London in 1968. Also many 'pop' songs were anti Vietnam war. The following is 'sarcastic' words of a song - Come on all of you big strong men Uncle Sam needs your help again he's got himself in a terrible jam way down yonder in Viet Nam so put down your books and pick up a gun we're gonna have a whole lotta fun (CHORUS) And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die Come on generals, let's move fast your big chance has come at last now you can go out and get those reds cos the only good commie is the one that's dead and you know that peace can only be won when we've blown 'em all to kingdom come

The Horrors and St Ethelburga's - From: Horrors
Yes, it is sad that man's inhumanity to man did not stop in 1945 but has carried on rippling from continent to continent. Pam and I agree that the only response is one of thanks to have the good fortune to be born where we were and when we were. Pam and I are currently talking to Leigh and Iris about getting a sculpture called 'Thornflower' cast to stand in St Ethelburga's Church in the City (rebuilt after the second IRA bomb destroyed it and now a Centre for Reconciliation and Peace) in memory of your grandparents and Pam's parents. The sculpture is by Charlotte Salmon who I know from the School of Meditiation whose grandmother was murdered in Treblinka. I don't suppose the German people have any more idea than the Cambodian people 'why' these horrors erupt or the Russians understand Stalin. Ideologies and religions certainly sometimes seem to magnify rather than reduce them. This is most remarkable when all the Traditional Religions from Anabaptism to Zoroastrianism have peace at their heart. We hope you also find the peace and the tranquillity of the temples of Cambodia, that is no less a part of reality. Love and stay safe Pam and Ian

Hi T, good to see you're having a great time...Whales look awesome...hopefully we'll see some in California too! Keep the photos coming, they're quality! Also, I can definitely recommend the beaches in Thailand...just try not to be there when there's a coup as parents tend to get worried...trust me!!

T, Great to get all these updates to keep us all going back here in dull, rainy UK. Please to hear that you're getting on well. Please bring me back one of those go-karts! Am very amused by the fact that you've all written your names on your hands so you can tell whose is whose! Love, N x

Rulers come and go... - From: Neiafu
I think that might be quite special(?)-to have been in Tonga when the King died, he's been around quite a while I think...Something to tell your kids?!! You look very happy, and are obviously enjoying yourself. Bit worried about Pete with this 'coup' thing - tanks rumbling around Bangkok - but I think its fairly peaceful. I just hope they don't do anything provocative (- like loll around drunk in the main street after curfew.....)oh dear.....

Look forward to more on the island. Tongan Royal family not having much luck. You should try and stay with local people as it helps the local economy and not foreigners who have decided to live there. First law of sustainable tourism. besides as you said on the phone they are more entertaining!! Keep enjoying it all. Are you going out into the harbour on a large yacht in Auckland - its what Dad wanted to do but they didn't listen. Like the peanuts. lots of love mum xxx

Hello!!! - From: Mana
Hi Tamsin, how are you? Got your message, sorry it's taken me so long to reply. Definitely up for meeting, I'll be arriving in Sydney mid October and will be in Australia for at least 6 months. Being totally disorganised, I don't really have a set itinerary, so not sure exactly where I'll be, I would think the East coast is the best bet! Keep in touch and we can arrange that nearer the time. Glad you're having a good time so far, how's Fiji? I'd love to go there, might save up a bit in oz and shoot over there for a couple of weeks. Anyway, travel safe, take care of yourself and I'll see you in Oz!!

Hello! - From: Mana
Hello! Am looking at your messages and photos even though tomorrow is the first day of term and I should really be reading those plans and getting myself ready for the new Owls! As you haven't written anything rude, I shall get your website up on the old whiteboard and show the kids- perhaps even get another message sent from them to you. (and I think I may be able to do that without help from Barbara!) The East coast of the USA was great, but am thinking Seattle and area around it looks pretty amazing too so am already planning my next trip! Keep on having lots of fun- we're all thinking of you! lots of love , Karon xx

We made it back alive from Hong Kong a few hours ago and am already sitting in the office! It was an absolutely stonking weekend in a awesome city, and Vernon was on his usual ridiculous form. I will tell you all more about it when I get more of a chance & also, I'll try & get some photos up online somehow for you to look at. Have a lovely time in the Islands. Lots of love, N xx

Hello from wet England Fri/sat 12.30am - From: Nadi
Thought about you this evening and Dad and I got out the globe to see how near to you Neil was in Hong Kong. He was four lines of longitude away where as we are 13 and if you stuck a knitting needle through the globe Fiji is exactly opposite us so it would come out right next to you or even poke you in the bottom. Talking drivvle(spelling?)must be time for bed. Judith and Tony here for the weekend. Guess what - it's raining. The greatest excitement here is the boiler engineeer while servicing the thing discovered we had red diesel in the tank and not kerosene, but we haven't been blown up by it or anything. Oh yes and Ipswich won for the first time this season. Village Players BBQ here on Sunday. I have set up some weave posts in the garden for Dori - don't hold your breathe. Love you - mumxxx

Hi Tamsin - miss you like crazy but glad you got there OK. Didn't do helicopter flight today as weather no good. Had fish and chips in Frinton last night and watched play that Downeys daughter designed (well I fell asleep- so what's new). Every time a plane flies over on way to Stansted I think of you. Have fun xxxxmum

Having lost, I thought I would enter your "Spot the Spelling Mistakes" game, although it's a little harsh to pull you up these as you've been up for 20 hours, so considering that you've done well... :-) ALLOWED Nice to talk to you last night. Love to all in Seattle. Enjoy the islands xx
