After a short flight from Brisbane and a night in Auckland we picked up our larger, better campervan and headed North to Tutkaka to snorkel in the Poor Knigths Island marine reserve. Recognised as one of the best dive spots on the planet, we spent a full day out at sea, snorkelling amongt some of the most spectacular underwater scenery and literally hundreds of fish (some of which were pretty big!). The water, however, was considerably colder than the quoted 20 degrees, but the sights more than made up for the chill. After the snorkelling, we sat back as we toured the islands of the reserve and entered some of the worlds largst sea caves. Heading back south, our next stop was Rotorua, the worlds most active geothermal area - you smell this place before you ... read more

Continuing up the East Coast in our very hot, very small camper, we arrived at Hervey Bay, ready for our 4x4 adventure on Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the worlds largest sand island and as such has to be visisted in a 4x4 as the main highway is the beach! We decided to go for the full 4 day 4x4 hire so we could see all of the sights. On arriving at the ferry port after a very early start and 8am safety briefing (with great advice including - do not drive into the sea, do not feed or pat the wild dingoes) we were told that the environment agency was closing the island as a Cyclone "Hamish" with his 300 kph winds and equally stormy seas was heading straight for Fraser Island. So, a little ... read more

After the hustle and bustle of Sydney, it was time for some sea and sunshine, so we headed to Australia's iconic surf spots (beaches!) in our newly acquired 'Hippie Camper'. En route we passed the resorts of Nambucca Heads and Coffs Harbour. Here we headed in land to the Dorrigo National Park for a rainforest walk where we saw some amazing waterfalls and had great views from the boardwalk lookout (see pics) and in a quiet picnic area at Nambucca Heads we encountered a 5 ft goanna - relaxing on the barbeque. Next up was Byron Bay - a chilled out, hippie kind of place and the campsite was right on the beach. With no 'boards' handy, we decided to try a spot of body surfing (consisting of being knocked over by wave after wave in ... read more

After a short flight from Melbourne we flew into Sydney to amazing views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House on another sunny Aus day. We treated ourselves to a bit of luxury by staying in a serviced apartment overlooking Darling Harbour, it was bascially a 5 star hotel but with a kitchen and washer/dryer (very handy for us travellers!) but they still made your beds! We wandered down to Darling Harbour and the many restaurants and bars then on to Circular Quay for our second view of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. It was just as good and you really know you are in Oz! We booked our Bridge climb for a few days time (enough to realise how very very high it was) but next up was the world famous Bondi Beach for ... read more

Time to rough it, the money wont last forever, we book into a hostel in St Kilda ('an up and coming' bohemian suburb) of Melbourne. We arrive by plane and decide to find St Kilda by tram. We get off at St Kilda station and walk around the corner, with all our luggage to find a group of derros and ferrals (Aus talk for drunks/scumbags etc) lining the streets. Not great, we thought (wheres the number for the melbourne ritz again?). Luckily we had got off the tram a few stops early and after a long and tiring walk we found beautiful St Kilda, right on the beach, with street cafes, restaurants and cool bars (one did bulmers!). Melbourne was a great city, transport was easy by tram (once you knew where you were going) and ... read more

We boarded our plane at Singapore airport and sat down for a ten hour flight to Adelaide. The captain made an announcement to say that the current temperature at our destination was 31C, nice, we thought. However the captain then continued to state that the current time in Adelaide was 1am, not nice. He confirmed the predicted temperature for the day was mid 40's, very bad. So we arrived on the hottest day in Adelaide for 80 years, a thermometer shattering 45.7C (for all you oldies thats about 116F!) - either way, v v v v v hot. Luckily we were staying with rellies (Aus talk) so were pampered in air conditioned luxury. We spent the first 3 days sat motionless as we tried to cope, even the Aussies daren't venture outside. Welcome to Australia. Thankfully, ... read more

You're back hopefully for Blog 2 of our adventures, to find out if its as exciting as the title read on... Next stop on our travels was a 1 night stop in Kuala Lumpur. We managed to cram in a few sights, we went up the KL Tower (after Shanghai and Toronto they get a bit samey) home of "the best view of the city" (except for the Petronas Towers) and then after a trip to the Hard Rock Cafe (sophisticated dining) we walked to the Towers (sort of). See photos. The next day was a flight to Sabah and the port/pirate town of Sandakan (imagine a smaller version of Portsmouth same crowd), we had a nice hotel but the range of nice looking restaurants was limited to say the least, we settled on the hotel's ... read more

Hi everyone and welcome to the first of our "blogs" from around the world! Having viewed a few other blogs (well one, ginge's) we're going to try and keep them short to avoid boredom setting in. This will hopefully be the longest one. Phew i hear you all say, anyway lets crack on. First port of call was the island of Phuket, Thailand (i await the gags) where we stayed in the Bangtao Resort (pictures below - trying to see how this thing works) in an air-cond bungalow about 100m from the beach! The weather for the first few days was cloudy (still hot enough to get burnt - martin) and swim in the sea. NYE was spent in the hotel beach restaurant (compulsory & 60 quid each!) but the food was good and they gave ... read more
