Time to rough it, the money wont last forever, we book into a hostel in St Kilda ('an up and coming' bohemian suburb) of Melbourne. We arrive by plane and decide to find St Kilda by tram. We get off at St Kilda station and walk around the corner, with all our luggage to find a group of derros and ferrals (Aus talk for drunks/scumbags etc) lining the streets. Not great, we thought (wheres the number for the melbourne ritz again?).
Luckily we had got off the tram a few stops early and after a long and tiring walk we found beautiful St Kilda, right on the beach, with street cafes, restaurants and cool bars (one did bulmers!).
Melbourne was a great city, transport was easy by tram (once you knew where you were going) and everyone was super friendly. The weather was perfect, around late 20's most days and sunny.
We spent a couple of days shopping, took a cruise over to Williamstown and back, visited an Aboriginal museum and saw Captain Cooks cottage (bizarrely transported brick by brick from England!).
We saw fairy penguins at dusk at the St Kilda wharf, had some great food
and continued our beer/wine research... still ongoing.
Next up Sydney and our bridge climb adventures!
