Sonny & Kathryn

Sun Kat

Welcome to our travel blog!
We should have started this a long time ago as we've pretty much covered Europe now.
However this is going to be our big trip, for Sonny going back to live in Australia and for me to emigrate to Australia.
We met in Oz 4 years ago and he followed me back to the uk. We have been living in the UK for 3 and a half years but making regular trips to different countries in Europe to keep our travel bug at bay.

Before we start our new life in Australia we thought that we'd travel for nearly 5 months stopping off at Italy, UAE, India, Sri Lanka and South east Asia.

Well it’s been a while since our last blog which is down to being too busy traveling, travelblog being down for a while and also having problems with our memory cards. Fortunately the problems have now been solved so we will now try and catch up. So we’ll start where the last blog finished which was flying to Hanoi. Altogether we had 3 nights in Hanoi and we actually found it pretty hard work as it’s a very hectic city and we didn’t find the people very helpful. We still had a good time and particularly liked the 2000 dong (6p) a glass beer that you get on the streets. The only catch is that you have to watch out that they don’t pour you a glass from the slops bucket which did almost happen to ... read more

After much debate we decided to take the cheaper but longer option to get to Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai, which was a 1-day bus journey and a 2-day boat ride. It was dragged out and very uncomfortable but the scenery was amazing so we didn't mind it too much. The first day on the boat was a bit of a party because the boat was fairly big and most people were standing around drinking. Sonny and his new found friends drank until there was no more beer left so when the boat stopped for the night at a small town the socialising continued. As a result of this the second boat ride was not as enjoyable and it didn't help that it was twice as small and no room to lie down and sleep. ... read more

After 4 days chilling out in Ko San Road in Bangkok we caught a night train to Chiang Mai. After a surprisingly good night sleep we arrived in Chiang Mai at 9am and checked into Julies guest house which we were both impressed with as we had a really nice clean room for 160baht (₤2.40) and they also had a great garden area with a cool chilled out atmosphere. However we were determined not to get caught up there and do nothing again so that first day was mostly spent organizing the days ahead. The following day we went on a cookery course. It cost us 800 bt (₤12.00) for the full day but was completely worth it because I have never eaten so much good food (even though I do say so myself!) in ... read more

Sri Lanka wasn't originally on our itinerary but as our flight from Delhi to Bangkok was via Sri Lanka we thought that we'd may as well stop off and have a look. We only had a week and wanted to see as much as possible so we hired a driver to take us around the country for ₤ 16 per day. Shortly after we arrived in Colombo airport our driver called Chandher picked us up and drove us to Kandy. On the way we stopped off at Pinnewala elephant orphanage. To be fair we both felt like Zombies at this point because it was 8 in the morning and due to the plane not leaving until 2am we both didn't have a wink of sleep. However we did still enjoy it. There were Elephants everywhere ... read more

Agra We only had the one night in Agra so on our way we stopped off at the ancient city called Fatehpur Sikri. Unfortunately we didn’t appreciate this as much as we should have because it was probably one of the hottest days so far near 50 degrees and we were also hung over- not a good combination! However we did manage to take photos but we just didn’t give it as much time as we should have. We made it to Agra in the middle of the day and waited until late afternoon before seeing the amazing Taj Mahal. When we finally saw the Taj Mahal all we can say is wow! Such a surreal feeling standing in front of this massive slab of marble crafted to perfection. For us it was such a ... read more

After not being able to book train tickets to go up to Corbett Park we spoke to our driver and decided that our only option to see tigers in our short time left in India was to extend our tour and go to Ranthanbhore national park back in Rajasthan. The day we arrived in Ranthanbhore park was the hottest day so far with temperatures as high as 48 degrees Celsius. You could fry and egg on the top of the car!! After checking into the Tiger Safari resort we spoke to other travelers and realized that the best way of getting on a safari was booking through the hotel. So we secured our place for the morning safari for 700 rs (£9.00) each. The next morning we were up at 5am to go on our ... read more

After 3 nights in Delhi with Kathryn being sick (again) and talking and arguing with various tour agencies we decided to take a tour around Rajasthan with West India travel. We managed to get the tour for £16 a day. This is for a car and a driver which includes all of the fuel and state taxes etc. We agreed to have a driver for 15 days and our first stop was Mandawa a town that is suppose to be famous for its painted Havelis. After a 7-8 hour drive we arrived in the town. The hotel that we stayed in had the best paintings but they were newly done. A little boy took us around the Havelis and unfortunately they haven't been looked after for years. Half of them were patched up with concrete ... read more

After our hectic time in Mumbai we were well up for kicking back on a beach eating lots of nice food washed down with galleons of beer. As we had no accommodation booked and stupidly decided to leave our Goa guide book behind we were clueless as to where to stay. We landed in Dabolim airport and decided that our only option was to head straight to the tourist office and try our luck. We ended up staying at Calangut beach. The room we booked into for one night was fine and there was a lovely pool however the location was just too quiet for us. As it’s end of season there was hardly anyone around. That night we saw lots of lights further up the beach so we caught a taxi up there to ... read more

Our first taste of India

All we can say is what a culture shock! We have heard lots of stories from travelers and have read books about India but nothing can quite prepare you until you’re actually there yourself. Our Indian experience started as soon as we got off the plane and got in a taxi. We decided to go for a non air-conditioned cab so we could save a few pennies to take us to our hotel. We quickly realised that this was a mistake. Mosquito's were flying in and out of the car. It took us about 2 hours to get there and most of this was just sitting in the traffic so as you can imagine we were extremely hot. Also the cabs are very small and Sonny couldn't sit up without banging his head. Shall we ... read more

After our teary goodbyes in England we arrived in Dubai in the early hours of the morning so it wasn't until around 3am that we got to our apartments. We stayed at the Golden sands 3 apartments for 219 pounds for 5 nights. We could not find a fault with the room. We were very hungry when we arrived so decided to splash out and get room service- we had 2 big steak sandwiches and chips for less than 8 quid. Not bad and it went down our belly's a treat as well. Our first full day in Dubai was pretty much wasted because we slept in till the afternoon. When we did get up we did boring stuff such as going to the supermarket and getting food in for our stay as we are ... read more
