** This blog has been censored: What goes on tour, stays on tour** We left Hong Kong to make the long journey to Borocay Island in the Philippines for Jason and Marisa’s wedding. Sun 29th Nov - Welcome Party We got to Manila Airport for our flight to Kalibo only to be told that the weight limit for our bags was only 15kg. Both our bags were packed to perfection weighing in at almost 20kg each…..mmmm….5kg out of each bag - that’s going to be a struggle! So it was off to a corner of one of the most chaotic airports in the world, to start stuffing clothing into our day packs. After 20 minutes re-packing and testing the zipper bursting limits on our day packs, we finally got our packs down to 15kg. So it ... read more
A Quick Adventure in Hong Kong Wed 25th Nov Hong Kong was great! We arrived and checked into the Harbourview Hotel on Hong Kong Island. We were upgraded to a ‘suite’, which was very roomy and had full harbour views. It was a good start to know we were staying somewhere nice. We arrived, but had to recover from our few days with John and Amy in Perth! So we had a few hours sleep before heading out into the abyss. We started with an early dinner at a traditional little restaurant in Wan Chai, near where we were staying. We had the preconception that most would speak English - especially considering Hong Kong had been a British Colony for so long - but this was certainly not the case. We found this out the first ... read more
A Quick Visit to Santiago and Valparaiso 23 Apr 09 We arrived in Santiago at 11.30pm and after a bus trip and taxi ride, we arrived at ‘Chile Hostel’ in the Providencia area. After our hectic day is BA and Uruguay, we fell straight into bed! 24 Apr 09 - Santiago to Valparaiso We boarded the 11am bus from Santiago to Valparaiso which took about 90 minutes. The bus station was a good 2km from the Old Town, apparently the only area worth exploring. As we started the 2km walk, it quickly became obvious that we weren’t in the nicest part of town. We stopped via the street fruit markets and were warned by a vendor to be very careful and to keep our belongings close to us whilst in Valparaiso. We nodded politely and simply ... read more
Argentina…..we had heard so much about it. Its’ stunning landscapes, delicious steaks, beautiful people, and its culture for partying. We had only 10 days to discover a little bit of each…. The other thing that was going to make this adventure even more exciting was that we were meeting up with a great friend from London, Emma. Little did we know initially, but the three of us were going to experience some weird and wonderful encounters in Argentina. 14th April 09 Buenos Aires was where the Argentinean adventure would begin. More specifically, it would begin at the Milhouse Hostel. For those of you that have been to Buenos Aires, you would know that ‘The Milhouse’ has a reputation for being “the party hostel of South America”. We were soon to discover that this reputation was being ... read more
Peru: 22nd March - 13th April 2009 Introduction We had three weeks to explore Peru in all its glory. We travelled from the coastal deserts, through the spectacular Andes, and out to the Amazon Jungle. We experienced unique cultures, ate local foods and met many beautiful (and not so beautiful) people along the way. Peru was truly incredible - the highlight of our trip through South America. 22nd March 2009 - Rio to Lima We were very impressed with our LAN flight from Rio, Brazil to Lima, Peru. The all new in-flight digital systems kept us amused until we touched down in Lima at around midnight. We were collected by a driver for our tour company ‘Intrepid’ and taken to a very basic hostel called ‘Hostel Pukara’ in Mira Flores. Exhausted, we collapsed into bed at ... read more
Sun, Surf and Sand - A Brazilian Paradise Ipanema, Rio De Janeiro 11th March 2009 - 15th March 2009 11th March 2009 After a 10 hour flight, we arrived in Rio de Janeiro at 6.30pm. As taxis are relatively cheap in Rio, we decided to catch one from the airport to our hostel, ‘Margarida’s Pousada’. This pousada is in Ipanema and was recommended by the Lonely Planet. The elderly lady, who owned the pousada proved to be very kind and friendly, however did not speak a word of English and unfortunately we only knew how to say ‘thank you’ in Portuguese. Given our level of exhaustion after a 10 hour flight (and as it was midnight, Madrid time), we collapsed into bed, in our spacious corner room. 12th March 2009 The next morning we had a ... read more
On the 8th March 2009 we packed what was left in our little London flat, which had been our home for the past 2 years, into our backpacks in preparation for our biggest journey yet! It was time to bid farewell to London Town and return back home to Oz, via South America. Destination: Australia Itinerary: London - Madrid - Brazil - Peru - Argentina - Uruguay - Chile - Brisbane - Sydney. To make our blogs reader friendly, we have decided to break each blog up into the different countries we visited. Feel free to peruse the photos, and leave a comment! Spain, Madrid: 8th - 11th March 2009 8th March 2009 Our early flight from London meant that we had to get up at 3.45am. Given that it was too early to get the ... read more
Hi Everyone! We have tried to keep a good record of every holiday we have had over the past couple of years whilst living in London. However, we don't document all the day trips that we go on. It's these day trips that really add to the experience of living in London. So this is a summary of all the 'little things' we did in and around London in 2008 and early 2009. As you will see from the photos and captions below, we really did, pack it all in! A big thanks to all of our friends! Without you guys we would not have had so much fun! Our years in London will go down as some of the most exciting, entertaining and crazy years of our life!... read more
Turkey: 4th - 8th January 2009 Sunday 4th January After having just spent 9 days in Egypt, it was straight from Cairo to Istanbul, Turkey for a quick 4 day tour. We arrived in Istanbul late afternoon and were greeted at the airport by a man holding a sign with our name on it. We assumed that we were meeting up with our tour group; however amidst confusion we finally understood that this was just a driver….we guessed that we would meet our tour at the hotel. The driver took us to where we were to stay for the night - Hotel Kupeli. We believed that we would be greeted by our tour guide; however the hotel staff knew nothing about this….not a great start. Fortunately, the hotel staff proved very helpful and contacted Mustafa, a ... read more
Hi Everyone, Welcome to another instalment of our wonderful adventures around the world. Feel free to leave a comment on the site for us - its always great to hear from our friends. European adventures have dominated our schedule since arriving in London almost two years ago. So it was decided that this time we would do something ‘not so European’. We thought that the Middle East would be different….So it was off to Egypt for 9 days…..and different it was! Saturday 27th December We took a BMI flight from London to Cairo. Cheap, but cheerful, and we didn’t crash - that has to represent good value! Upon arrival a man came sweeping through saying “Travel Talk Tour?”, and then grabbed our passports and disappeared - awesome; within 2 minutes of landing in Cairo, we had ... read more
