I am a second year university student who is backpacking to Peru over the summer holidays with my great friend Rose. We are starting in Lima, then travelling south to do some Inca trekking and then up along the North coast. YES!

So, I thought I should probably do one last blog entry to update those readers (those that exist...?) about what happened to me and Rose (and why I could no longer face updating this blog afterwards). Ok so we left off in Cusco, the wonderful cobbled, bus-trailing, tourist trap and haven that is Cusco. In Cusco I was hopsitalised for Altitude Sickness, I had to breathe oxygen from a tank for over ten hours, it was boring. However, on my return to the hostel we were surrounded by fantastically short-lived friends (well, some of them at least). Sometimes I struggled to keep up with Rose with my altitude sickness leaving me short of breath on even the shallow hills in Cusco, but we still found time and energy to party with these lovely people in 'Gringos ... read more

So it's been an eventful week so far, it already feels like we've been traveling for months (which, give or take, must be a good sign). The last couple of days in Lima were a blast. We sampled local cuisine called Cebiche which is basically raw fish marinated in lemon and chili. Neither of us could eat it so we had to leave straight away because it made us feel sick...very embarrassing! We saw a beautiful suburb called Miraflores and loved the colonial glamour of it all. Then we had an awesomely drunk night at the Point Hostel with the friends we had made there with a twenty hour bus journey over the Andes with our friend Rob, all the way to Cusco with a hangover. Not fun. In Cusco, about the second night, I was ... read more

Me and Rose have found ourselves in the centre of a bustling, bright and friendly city - Lima. It was an excrutiatingly long jouney to get here and the most stressful connection in Madrid where we had an hour and a half to check out and back in again plus navigate around weird glass corridors and endless escalators in the biggest airport in the world. Then we had to fly twelve and and a half hours to Lima not sitting sitting next to each other and being refused glasses of water by the airline staff and having to eat truly disgusting food. When we got off the plane we were greeted by staff wearing Swine Flu masks and we have also had Peruvian men, who give women lots of attention anyway, make swine flu related jokes ... read more

Flying on Friday and should be into Lima by Saturday morning, their time. Very excited but also nervous - one because I'm not the biggest fan of flying and two because I feel criminally under-prepared right now but hey, I'm sure it's gonna work itself out. I have my list of things to buy (note to self: MUST PICK UP MALARIA TABLETS), I have my assurances to myself that "It's all gonna work itself out" and I have one of the most culturally rich and beautiful countries in the world almost....almost at my fingertips. I can't wait. Oh yeah and I also have a great mate to look forward to annoying: I give us two hours before we want to kill each other Rose...before we're even on the plane. This is gonna work itself out, it ... read more
