It seems incredible that we have been here for more than two weeks now and are heading into the final part of our holiday. It has been utterly fantastic, we have seen and done so much and the joy of wandering around with no fixed agenda has met every expectation. We have decided to head to Niagara for our final hurrah, so are slowly moving west. Leaving the trailer park (Spencer said the showers were grotty... I, as usual, used the on board facilities) we headed to Burlington, highly recommended as the best resort on Lake Champlain. We thought it pretty average really. The best thing we found was a proper bakery where we bought a loaf of French bread for lunch. Bread in America is generally sweet, soft and mass produced so it was a ... read more

North America May 21st 2015

After surviving the Quechee State Park wilderness, we headed north to the capital of Vermont, Montpelier. As we often do, we stopped first at the local information centre where we ask what's interesting to see and the best place to park the rig. They were lovely and very helpful, marking a local map with things to do and letting us park in their car park. We really liked Montpelier (mont peel yer, with an American accent, not a French). It isn't quaint or at all smart but has a very individual vibe, slightly hippy ish and probably about forty years or so behind the rest of the world. We visited the very impressive State Senate building (wildly out of place in its grandeur) and wandered up Main Street and back. Returning to the rig, I popped ... read more

Yesterday morning we left Camden and headed to Wolfeboro on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. It was a dreary day as we left and it rained pretty much all the way until we got there, when the clouds cleared leaving a cloudless and warm late afternoon. The lake is beautiful, surrounded by tree covered mountains and Wolfeboro is a great little town right on the edge. We had dinner out at a bar/restaurant and sat on the outside terrace almost touching the water with a clear view. Definitely the most picturesque place we have eaten so far. The campsite we stayed at was pretty grim, definitely the worst so far. It was generally grotty, so heavily wooded that it was dark even in bright sunshine and the mozzies had to be seen to be believed. Strangely though it ... read more

North America » United States » Maine » Camden May 18th 2015

Maine is without doubt the most beautiful place I have ever been to and we have been very lucky with the weather, not particularly hot, but crisp clear days when the sky and sea are a brilliant deep blue. We are early in their tourist season which is a bonus really. Although some of the shops, restaurants and campsites are still closed, the benefit of going to fabulous places and being the only people there more than compensates and parking is pretty easy too. We spent the last two nights at Camden Hills State Park in Camden, our favourite so far. Camden is famous for its windjammers, old cargo sailing ships that have been converted into yachts and the little harbour was full of them as well as restaurants and up market tourist shops. Most of ... read more

North America » United States » Maine » York May 16th 2015

Apologies for the blog free days but we have been very busy in Maine eating lobster, mooching (and I might have read a book or two...). After Salisbury we dipped into Portsmouth and dipped out again fairly quickly after realising it was a bit like Bromley only with less shops. Carried on up the coast spending a night in York, then on to Boothbay Harbour, a really pretty harbour village. We found a great campsite right on the shore and had a very peaceful time wandering about the port, looking at yachts and classic New England houses. The next morning we went to Pemaquid Point. According to the Lonely Planet, 'Along a 3500-mile coastline famed for its natural beauty, Pemaquid Point stands out...' It was a beautiful day without a cloud in the sky and the ... read more

Last night and tonight spent at a campsite in Salisbury, MA. Small (described as a parking lot in one of the reviews!) but well organised and spotlessly clean. Free wifi, laundry and cable TV so just like home from home really. We spent today visiting Newburyport and Rockport, via Ipswich and Essex. Even more like home!! Both are lovely old ports with lots of restaurants, coffee shops and ice cream parlours. The locals are charming; people stop to chat and are thrilled when they hear we are from England. We discuss the new Princess, the weather and any connection (however tenuous) with the UK. One man was telling us in detail about his sister who got married in Scotland just after the war, until he got dragged off by his wife mid story. I think she ... read more

North America May 13th 2015

So here we are in the USA .......... The land of the Great Lakes, Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon and Dunkin Donuts. Some months ago I said to Sarah that I would treat her to a holiday of her choice anywhere in the world to celebrate her significant birthday. I had prepared a short list of my ideas to help her choose but in typical form she pulled the unexpected out of the hat, New England in an RV! A few clicks of the mouse later the trip was booked. My biggest fault is my need to always over spec and buy the biggest or the best that I can afford. Why book a two berth RV when you can have at least six spare beds on board and a room that slides out of the ... read more

May the bloody 13th. Fifty is such a ridiculous age and clearly nothing to do with me. Thank you all for your happy birthday wishes anyway. Spent yesterday and overnight on Cape Cod which is very pretty, all weatherboarded houses and beautiful beaches. They seem not to develop their beaches in the same way we do.... Not a kiss me quick hat or slot machine in sight... Just miles of dunes and sandy beaches. We walked across the salt marshes and along the beach for about a mile. Spencer contemplated a swim until he saw the shallows were inundated by the weirdest crab things ever.... Horse shoe crabs apparently, about a foot long and definitely prehistoric!! You'll have to google if you want to see them as, yes, you guessed it, no camera!!! We had lunch ... read more

North America » United States » Rhode Island » Newport May 11th 2015

Found a lovely campsite on Newport, Rhode Island where we spent last night and tonight. It's very peaceful and green, apart from the flies which are black. Apparently one should expect flies when one goes camping and if one doesn't like them then why did one want to go on a camping holiday? I don't know.... We decided to spend the day in Newport town, which turned into a bit of a saga. The first plan was to get a taxi there and back to save moving the RV, but there were none available. At all. So we explored the bus option which would have been ok only the next bus was in seven minutes and the bus stop was a mile away and the next bus after that was in an hour, maybe.... So we ... read more

North America » United States » Connecticut » Clinton May 10th 2015

Yesterday morning we picked up our home for the next three weeks and hit the road. It is just brilliant!! Has a sofa, banquette dining area, kitchen with fridge and freezer, shower room and a double bed in an electric slide out extension. I might have underestimated the challenge of driving a thirty foot long double wheel base vehicle on the wrong side of the road, but Spencer took to driving like a pro. We picked it up in New Jersey so had to drive back around NYC to head north and the traffic was horrendous with lane changes needed constantly and overtaking on all sides by impatient Yanks. Despite that, we made it to our first nights stop without incident. We stayed in a fairly average campsite in Clinton, Connecticut, chosen for its easy first ... read more
