Well the day started pretty much the same as yesterday. Opened the blinds to see a pile of snow in the courtyard. After breakfast Kerry & I went and had a look outside to see how things looked. A couple of the hotel workers were trying to shovel snow from the driveway to make access better. The roads were still a mess and sidewalks pretty slippery too. I decided that since the MARTA train station was only 50 metres away (just across the road) we should try and catch the train to the CBD which is 5 stops away as we were pretty sure they would have this area cleaned up by now. Well I woke to find out it was minus 6 and with wind chill actually minus 15. Decided to head away straight towards Atlanta as a major winter storm was still being predicted to hit the southern states later tonight. Atlanta is famous for a few things being the home of Coca-Cola, host of 1996 Olympic Games and CNN. It also has the largest free standing granite rock in the world known as Stone Mountain. The drive was only about 200km and the skies were mostly overcast. I was amazed at just how many signs we saw for Waffle House along the drive which looks like a dump but must be OK if they have so many outlets. I guess they sell Waffles ! The day started pretty late and we missed the breakfast inhouse. We had a couple of yoghurts and bananas with us and finished these and then headed off around 10.15AM. We arrived at Scottsboro Alabama around 11AM and the drive here was a bit different as we were not on an Interstate but driving through various small middle american towns (still dual carriageways so a good road nonetheless). A bit windy today but mostly clear skies and temperature a bit warmer at around 12 degrees. Today was essentially a travelling day to get to Chattanooga which is back in the Southeast corner of Tennessee, but when we researched the journey we realised that Scottsboro was about half way and has a famous attraction called the Unclaimed Baggage Centre. We all slept in and missed the breakfast session which finishes at 9AM. Luke was excited to see some snow flurries outside which were pretty much tiny snowflakes drifting down and they would melt as soon as they hit the ground. By about 10AM it changed to a light drizzle and temperature peaked at about 8 degrees. We then headed to the Adventure & Science Centre which is a modern museum which is interactive and has exhibits about space, water and the environment. It had some really good exhibits and the kids stayed here for 3-4 hours. One of the fun things they did was to to go on this ride which showed what it is like to defy gravity. Woke up to a really cold morning with temp at minus 3 degrees. In the morning we headed away from Memphis and headed for Nashville the home of country music. The drive took around 3.5 hours and we arrived around 1.30PM. The drive was different than what we had experienced so far with a few more hills and lots of trees / forests around although most had no leaves as we are in middle of winter. Very clear sunny day but still very cool. State Troopers everywhere on the drive to Nashville ( I reckon we must have passed at least 20 on the drive with half of them booking someone and the others trying to catch someone speeding.
