It was clear and sunny this morning and we could see the top of Mt Fansipan from our balcony for a change. We decided to take the opportunity to go up to the lookout on Ham Rong mountain. So lots of uneven steps and rest stops later we made it to the top for the magnificent view of Sapa and the garden below. Along the way there are some unusual statues, based on the lunar calendar but more like Disney characters. There's are also some nice gardens. It was a bit easier to get back down and then we went to the restaurant above the supermarket for lunch. Later we met Glenn and Su and their friends Tim and Meena for dinner at a restaurant owned by a Polish friend.... read more

This morning was fairly clear with sunny periods so we decided to walk through the vegetable gardens to the next hill. It was a bit more adventurous than I remembered as the path was very steep. We made it unscathed unlike another tourist who ended up covered in mud. The view from the hill is panoramic as it looks along the valley. It was still a bit hazy though. We walked back along the road stopping to chat to Su's sister Song and get an ice cream. We relaxed at the hotel for some time, sorting photos, blog writing, washing etc and later we went out and had some photos printed for Su's family. We did some shoe shopping on the way back and dined at the hotel restaurant (with the staff). A quiet night in. ... read more

As we were finishing breakfast Su arrived with the flower girls, her sister Pla and niece La La. I walked up to the square with them then we caught a taxi to the new market to buy their shoes and accessories for the wedding. Back at the hotel the girls showered and then they went to get their hair and make-up done. Some hours later they returned to dress for the wedding. Meanwhile Malcolm had joined Glenn at the venue. We took some photos on the hotel terrace before the arrival of the wedding car (Luu and Tuyen's) which was decorated with ribbons and flowers. I went in to the venue first greeted with hugs from Grandma Si, Su's mother Khu and others. Next the flower girls walked in scattering rose petals and then Su's father ... read more

It was a rainy day today and the clouds were so low we were walking through them. We had a slow start and had breakfast at our hotel. We thought we'd do a bit of shopping so grabbed the umbrella and headed out up the muddy road. They are putting the street wiring underground so it's currently a bit of a mess. We met Glenn and Su at the noodle Shop and discussed the wedding preparations before walking to the lake and market. On the way we met Su's niece La La with her son Xian and further up met her sister Song. We found a nice restaurant overlooking the lake for lunch and then wandered through SaPa back to the hotel looking at the shops as we went. Later we met Glenn and Su at ... read more

We woke before the alarm so were ready to go down to breakfast for 6.30. We were collected by the Mini bus to SaPa at 7 but had concerns for a while whether it was actually going to SaPa. Once it had passed the airport turn off we were much happier although not so keen on our driver who seemed distracted and tired. We arrived into SaPa at around 12.30 and were greeted by Luu at the hotel. SaPa has changed a lot, is much busier and a large construction site, so many new hotels and many more cars on the roads. Glenn and Su arrived on their moto and we had lunch together and caught up. After lunch we called in to see the wedding venue before going to the village house to deliver the ... read more

Today started in the transit lounge at KL where we boarded our flight to Hanoi. This was a much better flight and we landed at Hanoi early morning. We passed through immigration and were pleasantly surprised that the bag full of pump and fittings, minus its strap, made it, along with our other bag. Our driver was waiting to take us to Hanoi Amanda Hotel where they gave us an upgrade room with a balcony and let us check in early. After freshening up we went out to get some money, get a SIM for the phone and decided to get an early lunch which we had on the balcony of a nearby restaurant. We looked about for a while but the jet lag and heat got the better of me and we went back to ... read more
