We got our wake up call at 6am ànd went down to call a taxi which dropped us right at the Scoot check in. It's a very busy airport and we eventually made our way through the various checks to our gate. The flight was a little late leaving but we were lucky enough to get a free seat beside us. Scoot was great - good leg room, nice food, friendly competent staff and very comfortable. We had paid a little extra for the quiet zone which was worth it. We had our tablets to keep us entertained and the flight arrived early, passing over the CBD. We went through quite quickly to catch the train and bus home where Barrie and Amanda had left flowers and food to welcome us home. Thanks too to our ... read more

This morning we walked past the museum and St Andrew's Cathedral then over Anderson Bridge to Merlion Park. Then we continued along the river and crossed at Elgin Bridge. As we were heading back it started to rain heavily as it does here so stopped for lunch and then returned to the hotel to rest. Later we went down to Bugis Markets for a while then back to the hotel to pack for our flight home tomorrow.... read more

We found a good place for breakfast and then started our walk. The architecture in Singapore is so interesting and diverse and it's great they are preserving the old buildings as well as constructing amazing new ones. We walked past Chijmes which was originally a Catholic convent and then over the Helix bridge past Marina Bay Sands to the Gardens by the Bay. We spent some time there before making our way to the Chinatown via the MRT. We looked at the various shops there and also visited the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. We also visited the Indian Temple where there was a funeral in progress which we watched for a while. We caught the MRT to our nearest station and had dinner near our hotel. We had a swim at the hotel pool before retiring ... read more

Our taxi arrived at 6.45 to take us to the airport. We checked in and went through, purchasing a few more gifts at the airport shops. The flight was a little late and almost 3 hours later we landed in Singapore. We got some money at the ATM then caught a taxi to Hotel Mi. ($18 taxi). The hotel is very new and in a very convenient and nice area. We freshened up and headed out finding a street market and then the Bugis Markets passing an Indian Temple and a Chinese Temple. We had some dinner at Bugis Junction before returning to the hotel.... read more

We spent the day around the Old Quarter of Hanoi. We started with a visit to the Cathedral and then made our way towards our favourite restaurant shopping and exploring along the way. We stopped for spring rolls and a drink and then made our way back to the hotel. We had requested a room change as the bed was way too hard but it wasn't ready so we rested for a while before setting out again. We eventually got our new room with a softer bed and a nice balcony. Later we had dinner at Gecko Restaurant which is in front of the hotel before heading up to pack for our flight to Singapore tomorrow.... read more

It was our last day in SaPa. We packed our bags and Song, Chung, Su and Glenn arrived. We chatted for a while as we were waiting for a key to a different room so that we could put our luggage there for the day. They showed me the things they had made and gave us some gifts and we tried to work out some birth years and spelling of family members. Once we had moved our luggage we headed to the market lady's shop for lunch meeting Vang and Pai on the way. After lunch we went to see where Glenn and Su are staying and also to see Cedric and Pan's shop. Back at the hotel we brought our luggage down to the bar. Luu and her mother in law came to say goodbye ... read more

We did some shopping this morning then met up with Glenn and Su to go to the family home for lunch. It was bucketing down with torrents of water running down the street. We caught a taxi to the village shops and carefully made our way up the slippery path. Most of the family were there so it was a good opportunity to see them again before we leave tomorrow. We admired their new bathroom again and I dropped in next door to see Grandma Si. Khu gave me a Black Hmong jacket which she had embroidered herself. The clouds were rolling in as we left to make our way down to the road taking care not to slip after the rain.... read more

Today Su's sister Sa Sa took us on a trek to the waterfall. We caught a taxi to the family rice fields where Khu, Vang, Hu and Nhu were harvesting sticky rice. Their land is on the high side of the road with magnificent views. We stayed a little while and then started our trek. The first stop was at a lookout where we were surprised to see Su's grandmother. We took the opportunity to give her some sunglasses and reading glasses and her friends were pleased to get some too. After taking some photos we set off again. We walked to Ta Van village and then along the path/track/muddy trail to the waterfall. We picked up a couple of followers along the way, one of them very helpful as I tried to keep my footing. ... read more

We walked down the road to Cat Cat Tourist Area. We had been there on our first trip to Sapa but thought it was worth another look. When you first arrive there are shops where you can hire Vietnamese costumes. This was very popular and made it quite colourful as many Asian tourists enjoyed doing this and posing for selfies. Along the way there are lots of shops, traditional buildings and lovely scenery. In the valley there's a pretty river and waterfall. We went as far as the Cat Cat bridge and then caught a taxi back up to Sapa as it was a long way up hill and it had also started to rain. Later we went out to dinner and did a bit of shopping.... read more

We shared a Taxi with Tim and Meena to the village wedding celebration stopping at the roadside and then climbing up the hill to the home. The family and friends were gradually arriving, some carrying tables, chairs and ice. Glenn and Su then arrived and went to change into their Hmong clothes. The new bathroom was still being finished with the doors being attached. There was an opportunity to take some photos and then the food was all brought out. We started at a table outside but soon were asked to eat with the family inside. There was lots of different dishes - pork, chicken, rice, fish, watermelon and mushrooms. After the meal there was a small family rice wine ceremony where Glenn and Su and Malcolm and I drank two shots each of rice wine, ... read more
