After a lazy sea day it was a bit difficult to rise this morning, but we made it up to the Lido anyway as we approached the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. I got myself a bowl of Irish Oatmeal and a banana, and two of their tiny demitasse cups of Swiss muesli each crowned with one raspberry. Sharon waited in line to get her scrambled eggs, potatoes and white toast. The Nieuw Amsterdam is definitely fuller on this leg of the cruise. We’ve been meeting many people at meals that are also on a Collector’s cruise, as we are, who embarked in Venice when we did some two weeks ago. There are still some on board who came before us who lived thru ‘the incident’. We came to dock in direct view of ... read more

Sharon went off to mass while I worked some on the blog, and played some on Word-Crack. The priest on this cruise is from Malta and speaks softly with an accent but seems very pleasant. When she came back we went to the kiosk on Deck 2 to order and print our tour tickets for some of the upcoming ports of call. This is the first ship we’ve been on that has the kiosk and it was very easy and fast to use. We went to the formal dining room for breakfast, and it looked like everyone else had exactly the same idea on this first sea day of the second leg of our cruise. We sat at a table for eight with two other couples: one from Wales and the other, Ian and Liz, from ... read more

We had no trouble finding a place to eat in the Lido this morning. I tracked down the tiny cups of Swiss muesli by the coffee in the cross-section between starboard and port serving sides. I took three and poured them into a single bowl, berries and all. Sharon just got potatoes and toast because the French toast wasn’t cooked the last time she had tried them. Moving through the arrivals terminal we saw the luggage of many of our fellow travelers neatly arranged in color coded groups, ready for collection by departing passengers to clear customs and passport controls. Some of the people leaving the ship here in Venice and who had flights later in the day were joining us on our tour to Murano and Burano. We walked to the floating docking pier for ... read more

We went up to the Lido for breakfast after Sharon attended the last mass for this cruise. The first leg of our cruise was nearing an end. The Lido was packed with people and we walked up and down and couldn’t find any place to sit. We finally found a table for six that was being used by a British couple and had two additional place settings (for us we hoped). They motioned for us to sit down. The first couple soon left; but, not before another couple sat down across from us. They, unlike us, first staked out a place to sit, and then rushed off to get their food. We had to fend off others who wanted to sit down, after yet another couple now occupied the spot left by the original British couple. ... read more

We rose again not worrying about any early tours. Sharon went to mass and I worked some on the blog. Later we had breakfast in the Lido: eggs over medium for me with some sausage and far too little potatoes… Sharon had hers scrambled and again was unable to get a lone single piece of crispy bacon. We had to rush off to make our 10AM collector cruise meeting for those 250 or so of us who were continuing on to Barcelona. We received a tag-team presentation from the Destination Specialist Tom and the Excursion Specialist for our upcoming ports of call. Dave gave us the three pieces of information of what we would need to get off the vessel in Venice: 1-Nieuw Amsterdam Room Key Card, 2-Passport and 3-In-Transit Pass Card (that lets us skip ... read more

We finally have a morning where we can take our time rising and shining. I was perhaps not keeping up with Sharon who seemed to be in a hurry to get to mass. She urged me, “It’s Sunday, we need to go and get a seat!” I gave her that “Please, there are going to be plenty of seats this early in the morning!” look with my eyes. “Well I’m going now, I’ll save you a seat if I can,” and off she went. I followed about five minutes later and arrived about five minutes before the hour and lo, there were, count them, five people in the room. I whispered to Sharon, “Thanks for saving me a seat!” More people eventually did arrive, and there were perhaps two dozen worshippers in all. Father Schaut talked ... read more

Another early morning found me needing more sleep after a bit of a restless night in which neither of us seemed to be able to nod off. I made the brilliant decision to don my cargo pants shorts with its many deep pockets, some sealed by Velcro for keeping items secure. I’d wanted to where these out on tour before this, but some of the places, such as Ephesus made this impractical as some religious sites have dress codes that these pants simply wouldn’t meet. I got my shoes on, and then proceeded to put together everything we needed for the day and packing the backpack. I then couldn’t find my small wallet (the one with my room key a little money and a credit card). Then I remembered that it also had Sharon’s room key ... read more

Middle East October 2nd 2015

This was another one of those, “It seemed like a good idea at the time” moments when the alarm sounded at 5AM to wake us up for our 7:15AM tour. My phone alarm rang a second time five minutes later; but, it was across the room charging on the desk by the only two outlets in the room. We brought a distribution cable with us so we can charge more than just the two outlets, which we seem to make use of with two laptops, two cell phones, and camera batteries. We went to the Lido and were among the first to arrive. I had the Irish Oatmeal and still miss that they don’t offer the Swiss muesli as they did in Alaska last Spring. They also don’t have sliced bananas; but, I did finally find ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Mykonos October 1st 2015

Sharon went to mass after we slept to almost 7:15 AM. I finished up one blog, and still had to write yesterday. I chose to try the Eggs Benedict, which must not be as popular as they are on cruises in Alaska or New England. My experience is that they often have a dedicated Eggs Benedict station with a dozen different types of Eggs Benedict offered. Here in Europe there was no special Eggs Benedict station, just the normal Egg Station. And the eggs weren’t ready, they were cooked to order rather than already there to take out of the hot water. My dish was very good, but there was a bit of a wait. We headed up to the Crow’s Nest to meet our trivia teammates; but, first we were to play our Sudoku Challenge. ... read more

We had an early start to the long day in the Lido. I settled for oatmeal and am having some luck reducing my calorie intake. Then I added a sausage and croissant with two pads of butter. Sigh!!! Sharon had French toast and potatoes, and at least she remembered her teeth this morning; although, she did need to go back and get them (but we’d barely closed the door to the cabin). Our first stop was at the Blue mosque which I think that I heard had some 22,000 blueish tiles lining the walls inside the mosque. The line wrapped around the entire mosque and there were busloads of tourists that had come for a brief visit, as well as many confused visitor’s that had come on their own to have a look. Our guide had ... read more
