We’re up bright and early again and after having breakfast we hit the road back to Kampala, stopping to buy a couple of gorilla t-shirts from the locals on the way. BACK TO KAMPALA Forgot to add, the car that was brought to replace our broken one has also died, so yesterday another car and driver was brought from Kampala, so we are now on our third car, fourth if you include the wrong car at the beginning! Francis tells us now that we were in fact lost last night, the other driver said he knew of a short cut, turns out he didn’t! We have lunch at the same place as on the way down, this time there a lot more people (tourists) there. Food again is great and we are on our way nice ... read more

We are up early as we need to be at the Ranger Station by 8am. We have breakfast (Victor is quite concerned when we turn down a large cooked breakfast) pack our bag with the lunches they have prepared for us and it’s a short 5 minute walk to the briefing point. BORING FORMALITIES We watch a bit of gorilla video until everyone is there and then we get our first briefing where it is explained the circumstances in which we may or may not receive any of our permit fee ($500 USD) back. 1. If we have a cold or are unwell and we do not depart we get 50% back 2. If we do not see any gorillas we get 100% back 3. If we get half way and realise we are physically unable ... read more

We're up and excited to be on our way to Bwindi, one more sleep and we get to (hopefully) see the gorillas! The restaurant packs us a paper bag with muffins, fruit and water to take with us for breakfast, yummy. We go outside just before 7am to wait for our driver to take us to Bwindi to see the gorillas. About 7:15am the doorman asks us who we are waiting for and we tell him Abacus Tours and he says ‘here the come now!’ A Landcruiser pulls up, the driver hops out and introduces himself and apologises that our intended driver is unwell so he was called at 3am to take his place. By now the doorman has loaded all our bags into the car. The driver hands me the phone and the man on the ... read more

I get up at 4:45am to get ready and I wanted to wash my hair for maybe the last time in a while with nice shampoo and conditioner, unfortunately I’m so tired (and, as Tim says, blonde) that I end up using liquid body soap instead of shampoo - at least I used conditioner and not body moisturizer! GOODBYE GORAH Andrew meets us at our tent at 5:30am to take our bags and us down to the car, remember that we can’t walk alone in the dark. While Andrew and I were having a bit of a chat (as you would expect at that time of the day) Tim tells us to be quiet and listen. Nearby we could hear the lions roaring and the Hyena’s howling, it also explained what the noises were we could ... read more

WAKE-UP CALL Andrew (our guide) arrives at 7:30am with my hot chocolate and Tim’s orange juice. Not quite sure what happened to all the hours between 10pm and 7:30am, because I closed my eyes at 10pm and suddenly its morning, what a great sleep, my first warm night in ages! But sadly, no animal noises were heard - is that because there were none around or because we were virtually unconscious… I tried to turn the heater back on, click, click, click, click but nothing. After the 20th click, Tim had his head under the pillow, so I took this as a hint to give up, time to get ready for breakfast and our morning game drive anyway. BREAKFAST Having now experienced lunch and dinner we could only presume breakfast was not going to come up ... read more

Hit the road by 6am, Chloe followed us down the drive then ran off to another warm room to sleep. The plan is to see Monkey Town just out of George, it opens at 8am and we should be there in time, spend a little time there then get to Addo early in the afternoon. Carmen the Garmin worked a treat and the roads were windy but nothing like the ones we were on to get to Oudtshoorn so we made it there in great time, in fact they were still setting up and opening. HAPPY MONKEYS GALORE They rescue all breeds of monkeys, lemurs etc that have been pets or in zoos, some smuggled from South America and there were a lot Lemurs from Madagascar. We were given a guide (you can’t walk through without ... read more

NOW I MISS TECHNOLOGY I have to phone the Fraud people in Australia and because of time difference have to do it e-a-r-l-y, well before 0800 anyway. Because the only place I can get phone coverage is in the one spot in Reception I head up there at 0645, but it’s closed. I walk around for half an hour trying to get my phone to work, I must look like a complete technology city geek walking and looking at my phone waiting for any sign of life. Eventually get 2 bars, hallelujah! Get through the right department (should add here that I’m standing half way up the hill in the middle of the road), I kneel down to get information out of my bag and bang - disconnected, that half a metre obviously makes a lot ... read more

THE GOOD Got up bright and early to go and see the Meerkats. We met Devey on the side of the road and then followed him 8km to the sight. We/I had a cup of hot tea while Devie talked about everything. Really interesting guy, has done so much in his time, everything from trapping game for reserves to starting up the first rodeo in South Africa. Then we walked a bit until we came across a few mounds of dirt. Devey set up 2 chairs for us and then we waited. After another gorgeous sunrise, the first Meerkat popped it’s head up, then another and another. Eventually we had 13 in total. Devey explained their behaviour and mannerisms. As they warmed up we followed them as they started to make their way across the reserve. ... read more

We left after breakfast for a 535km drive to Oudtshoorn (pronounced outs horn) along the famous Garden Route. We got stuck in a road works traffic jam for about an hour so that slowed things up a bit, okay a lot! But no signs to say so until you actually got to the spot. MONKEY HEAVEN We stopped at a place called Monkey Town (it only involved one u-turn to find it so we were happy with that). It was a sanctuary for mostly rescued monkeys that people had as pets and then abandoned. It was set up really well, with you walking in a cage tunnel and all the monkeys out in the open. They weren’t interested with us until they heard Tim’s chocolate wrappers then they were interested! DRIVING - RULES? NOT SO MUCH… ... read more

A STEP BACK IN TIME Today it’s finally off to Robben Island - hopefully! It looks nice outside so fingers crossed. Tim’s on the third day of man-flu so instead of walking we’re taking a taxi. Got to the Waterfront about 15 minutes before the ferry was due to leave and the queue was huge, it was the first day in 12 days that the ferry has run so there were a lot of people like us who had to postpone. They say to get there 10 minutes before departure time but I seriously recommend getting there half an hour before otherwise you won’t get a choice of where to sit, upstairs outside or down inside. I also recommend when you get on the ferry to sit on the left side as you face the front, ... read more
