My ex work colleague, Elaine aka Por Por (Cantonese nickname), who I keep in touch with decides to come over from Hong Kong and stay with another ex work colleague, Joanna, who lives in London. I had promised Elaine a road trip next time she visited the UK, and I'm a man who keeps his promises. After spending her first night in London, Elaine catches a fast train with Joanna out of London to Reading where I pick them both up for Por Por adventures to begin. Bath Our first destination is the beautiful city called Bath, which is situated in the county of Somerset. This city gets it's name due to Roman built baths that date back to AD 60 and is the main tourist attraction of the city. The Romans discovered the hot springs ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Antibes August 11th 2016

I met Stefano last year through Couchsurfing when he kindly hosted me at his place when I travelled around Luxembourg and he told me I must visit him sometime at his holiday apartment in France. Almost a year later, Stefano reminds me if I would be visiting him. He says just pay for your flights, I'll host you and we can go out at sea on my boat. Sounds like an opportunity to not be missed so I book my flights. Day 1 On my arrival to Nice airport, I am greeted by Stefano and another Couchsurfer called Diego who is visiting from Uruguay and travelling around Europe. We first visit Stefano's lovely apartment in Antibes. His apartment is in a luxury secured area with it's own communal swimming pool. I have time to freshen up ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Córdoba June 12th 2016

About a year ago I received an e-mail notification of Couchsurfers needing somewhere to stay in the nearby town to me called Reading. Although the town Is spelt the same way as in reading a book its actually pronounced as "Redding". I message this guy called Miguel who I thought wanted to stay near Reading and was visiting from South America. Anyway, turns out that Miguel doesn't need anywhere to stay and just put Reading down as the location in the hope to speak to native English speakers. After messaging Miguel a few times, I knew he was a top guy. We have many similar interests and both passionate about travelling. I find myself talking to Miguel on a regularly basis and, although we have never met in person, felt like we had become good friends. ... read more

Day 1 At the last minute I decide to decline staying with a Couchsurfing host as they're too far from the city centre of Buenos Aires. Luckily, I find a really good last minute deal for a 4 star hotel right in the heart of Buenos Aires at GBP 120 for three nights. The hotel is Park Silver Obelisco and very close to the Obelisco monument on the main road called Avenida 9 de Julio which translates to 9 of July Avenue in English. When I first arrive in Buenos Aires; it's dark, raining lightly and rather chilly. It's the start of winter in Argentina and it's strange to comprehend why I have come here when June is summer back in the UK. I may be mad, but I wanted to visit Machu Picchu in the ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Aguas Calientes June 7th 2016

Day 1 An early start as we take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. The train stops on the way to allow people to get off to do the one day Inca Trail hike. I'm gutted to miss the chance of doing this trail. The permits for this hike are restricted to 200 tourists a day and, despite booking my trip four months in advance, it was not good enough for visiting Machu Picchu at the start of the peak season. Although I missed out on one of the best hikes in the world, the train still at least offers impressive scenery views of the Scared Valley. Once we arrive at Aguas Calientes and check-in at the hotel we have plenty of free time to explore this small town. The town gets it's Spanish name ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Ollantaytambo June 4th 2016

Our tour guide, Rive, has managed to get us a large comfy G Adventures bus to take us to Ollantaytambo via the Scared Valley. This is such a relive, as minibuses are never fun for someone who is nearly 6 foot 2! We first stop at the Statue of Christ, this statue overlooks the city of Cusco and offers great views. The views are probably a 100 times better since the sun is blazing and the sky is blue, but the air is slightly cold. I've got my shades out and I am wearing shorts, a top and fleece. What a great look... I just can't decide if I am hot or cold? must be the high altitude that makes it that bit cooler. Next we stop at a small village called Ccaccaccollo. Here G Adventures ... read more

An early start to catch a short flight to Cuzco from Lima. This will be flight number 3 of 9 for this trip and I am pushing myself hard with my fear of flying by deciding to sit in a window seat for the first time ever. I am really glad I did as the views of the Andes are absolutely stunning! Once we arrive at Cuzco airport we are greeted by our G Adventures guide who will be taking us all the way to see Machu Picchu. The tour group is large with 16 of us in total. Apart from myself there is only one other solo traveller and the rest are couples. It does feel slightly awkward there being so many couples in the group, but everyone seems friendly. The age group very mixed, ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores May 31st 2016

Day one After arriving at the hotel in the early hours, I was keen to have a stroll day and do things at a slow place. I decide to visit the centre of Lima to see the colonial buildings. The hotel staff tell me about an app called Easy Taxi. This app is free to download and providing I am connected to wifi I can request a nearby taxi to pick me up using GPS. My hotel is in the popular tourist district known as Miraflores and although the journey is around 12 miles into the centre of Lima I find that the taxi takes almost an hour to get me to my destination. I thought San Jose was bad for traffic, but seems Lima is worse. The taxi drivers English is bad, my Spanish is ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto May 28th 2016

Day One Niagara Falls has been high on my bucket list for quite some time so I decide to stop off in nearby Toronto before heading down to South America after discovering that the cost of my plane tickets were massively cheaper flying indirectly. However, this meant I could only spend two nights in Toronto to achieve best price with minimal stops to South America. I scratched my head at the thought of two whole days in Toronto knowing it wasn't enough time to see everything. Before setting off on my journey, I looked at a guidebook (Eyewitness Top 10) and thought hard about what I really wanted to see and planned my itinerary carefully. Luckily my flight was early leaving the UK and with Canada being 5 hours behind I had arrived in Toronto by ... read more

Catching the Ferry I thought my drive from Lille to Dunkirk would be fairly straight forward since it was only 80km away and involved using a motorway for the majority of the journey. I set my alarm, allowing 2.5 hours in total before my ferry would set sail for England. I woke up one hour before my alarm was due to go off. I was feeling tired, but could not go back to sleep so decided to get up and get to the ferry earlier than planned. I selected the port location on my Satnav and set off for home. The weather was bad with heavy rain. I decided I had plenty of time with waking up early and went at a steady pace on the motorway. Once I got to Dunkirk, the traffic was bad, ... read more
