A chain traveler that often will spend some time during each trip to book the next trip....

I have been roaming the planet for almost 30 years and finally gave up any hope of settling down and joined the expat community about 10 years ago. I have lived in England, Bahrain, Japan, and now Indonesia. Travels have included somewhere around 60 countries and counting....(except I don't count, I just GO!)

Since I'm more of a mathematician than writer, this blog will mostly be random musings - the things I think about during the long hours of travel. There will also be anecdotes and travel advice, with the occasional article on an actual trip. If you enjoy, please feel free to subscribe or share or recommend

The continuing quest for paradise… I have this vision of an unspoiled, tropical paradise – swaying palm trees, perfect blue skies and gentle ocean breezes, powdery white sand, and clear turquoise water. I’ve seen pictures of it on calendars, travel web sites, and airline posters. Therefore, it must exist. I will find it…. I’ve come close a few times. Hawaii is a paradise by any definition. I love Maui and always go when I have a chance, but it is a bit overdeveloped and crowded to be a true escape. Plus, in my mind, paradise does not have a K-Mart. Nothing I’ve seen comes closer to those ideal poster images than the Maldives. However, the lack of competition on each one-resort island suddenly inflates prices to four times their natural size. This stresses me more than ... read more

The school trip…. For years and years I’ve been travelling – either alone or with a friend. I like both. I like touring with a good travel companion, but I also relish being on the road independently. But, once or twice a year, I hit the road with a large number of middle school students. This is a whole different style of travel all together! The opportunity to take extended school trips to interesting places was one of the things I most looked forward to when I decided to teach overseas. First of all, I love all travel and especially free travel. Second, I would not have to worry about accommodation, transportation or meals – it would all be arranged for me. Third, I would get to take young people to see some wonderful sites and ... read more

Dragons in the Year of the Dragon…. For many years I’ve tried to plan a trip to Komodo National Park. After several attempts, I discovered that traveling in less developed parts of Indonesia means old style travel. I don’t mean horse-and-buggy-old-style, but I do mean the kind of old style where you can’t rely on the internet, trip advisor, or google searches. Somewhere, deep in my memory, there is a hazy vision of buying a plane ticket and landing in a foreign place with no hotel reservations, no tours booked, no transportation planned out. The only information I had to guide my arrival was what I could find in an out-of-date Lonely Planet (or more likely, Let’s Go!) book. After that, it was all adventure. Sadly, the easy availability of travel reviews and booking options have ... read more

Top 10 reasons to love Thailand…. Tomorrow I’m heading to Thailand. An exciting trip, right? Not really. Thailand has become my home away from home (away from home). Over the last 10 years I’ve lost count of the number of trips I’ve made to that country. Why, when there are so many places to visit on this planet, do I keep going back? Here are my top 10 reasons…. 10. Beaches: Lots of places have beaches, but the beaches in Thailand are the stuff that postcards and screensavers are made of. Find the right one and you will be in a private cove with swaying palms, you might find white sand and turquoise water, or you might be surrounded by dramatic karst outcroppings. No matter what your pleasure, Thailand contains paradise found! 9. Food: For anyone ... read more

The Midnight Summit on Green Turtle Conservation…. Shortly after Oman relaxed their rules on foreign visitors, two friends (Sally and Susan) and I decided to go see that country. We were living in the Middle East at the time, so we thought we knew what to expect. Oh how delightfully wrong we were. Oman was not like any place I had been…. Our introduction was not the best. Although they had made it easier for foreigners to visit, and although we were able to stand in a special line reserved for Gulf residents, the passport control process still took three hours. I’m glad we arrived after they relaxed the rules and with some status, otherwise we might still be in line! However, our second impression was much better. Unlike the rest of the Middle East, this ... read more

My Favorite Destination…. People are always asking me what my favorite destination is. I usually give some general answer like “I’ve never met a destination I didn’t like!” Which is true, but in reality, my trips are part of who I am. So, like a mother that may have a favorite child but never admits it out loud, I’ve always been hesitant to name a favorite. The closest I come is sometimes I’ll give a top 5 list, but this list always changes with my mood… So, I’m finally ready to put it out there – I’m finally ready to admit which trip was my favorite! If I could only take only one trip and I knew what I know now, I would choose a destination at the far end of the earth. I would choose ... read more

Between the travel… I remember when I finished grad school and went out to interview for my first teaching jobs. One principal asked me what I like to do in my free time. I responded without thinking, “I love to travel!” This apparently wasn’t a good enough answer and he asked what I like to do when I’m not traveling. I thought about for a minute and said, “I read about travel, I plan travel, I watch the Travel Channel.” Since they hired me, I guess they liked my educational qualifications enough to compensate for my lack of varied interests! Right now, I’m between trips. I just finished a weekend in Lombok and my next trip is to Thailand in, according to my Tripit app, 55 days. But enjoying Thailand will be only half my trip, ... read more

The other Kuta Beach…. I’m spending the weekend in Kuta! Not the big, famous beach in Bali, but the small quiet beach on the neighboring island of Lombok. It has rained this whole weekend, which is a bummer, but that has given me a lot of time to reminisce, to think about tourist development, and to make some comparisons. This is what I’m musing about as I walk around this small village…. I made my first trip to Bali somewhere around the year 2000. I spent the better part of the three weeks wandering through the smaller villages and less developed areas. I don’t know why, with so many famed tourist destinations, I spent my first trip to a new place on the road less traveled – but, it was the right choice. I found Bali ... read more

The spa experience – part I: my introduction… When I was growing up we did not enjoy the existence of the numerous day spas that have sprung up like fast food restaurants in every city across the land. Now, you can go to your local storefront and experience any number of treatments – including a variety of massages, scrubs made from the full list of typical Thanksgiving dinner ingredients, facials and nail treatments by the dozens. It is become quite an industry. These days, you see 8-year old girls having spa manicures – carefully choosing just the right shade of bright pink for their nails. You see men going to have their anti-aging facial treatments and for women, the trip to the spa has become a frequent ritual, as well as the ideal birthday gift. But ... read more

Rainy Days and Mondays…..in Jakarta Today was my first day back to work after my 3 week holiday. Overall, I was in a good mood and the day passed very quickly. I got a lot done, attended a few meetings with colleagues, and before I knew it – it was time to head home. But, this is where I made my mistake. I got distracted and spent time at my desk goofing around my computer. Not working mind you, just goofing around - checking airfares and such…. I completely forgot that it is the rainy season in Indonesia! The rainy season actually isn’t as bad as it sounds. I pictured weeks upon weeks of non-stop rain before moving here, but that isn’t how it is. It rains once or twice a day for anywhere between 20 ... read more
