Just a quick note to say I just got an email saying that an article I wrote for the Work and Family Foundation of Canada was being published today. I wrote an article on what I think is the "recipe" for my parent's long marriage. Will send you an update on our day yesterday! Sal & the clan!... read more

"There is nothing more miserable in the world than to arrive in paradise and look like your passport photo." Well Al & I didn't even bother with going to sleep Monday night, with having to wake at 2:30 am as our taxi was taking us to the airport for 3:45 am. Peter our neighbor kindly got up and came and helped us load all our bags into the taxi...with 7 of us going, there was no shortage of luggage. (Thank you Peter...) Ava marveled at the traffic at 4 in the morning; I told her that doctors and nurses, and firemen all go to work or are at work at that time of the morning. She said, "huh, I thought the doctors would be home at night counting their money!"...That gave us a good chuckle! SO ... read more

"With me, a change of trouble is as good as a vacation" ~ Hi all, we are off to Playa del Carmen (Mexico) to dip our toes in the ocean for 2 weeks, leaving on Tuesday. Due to a seat sale and due to my work an exceptional rate on our condo. So blessed to have this job, and it allows us stretch out our dollars for 2 weeks instead of one. This time Al gets to pack a bag too as last year he was in French & missed out & it was a chick trip with my Mom, Mom-in-law, friend Martha & my 3 young gals. So it will be us & the kids, Martha (again!), my mom Joan and Al's parents Ray and Pat. The girls are looking forward to spending time with ... read more

"A little nonsense now and then, is treasured by the wisest men" ~ Hello those of you following our adventures. It's hard to believe, but 7 nights & 8 days went by at a nice easy pace, giving both Danielle & I a rich experience with lots of time to reflect, relax and enjoy every minute of what this place has to offer. I have to say, if you could bottle serenity and peace and sell it here, sheesh, the bottles would be flying off the shelf. Regardless of our geography, what has been SO nice to spend uninterrupted time with my long-time friend in a place that makes your senses come alive. As friends we've shared so much together over the course of a few decades; the ups and downs of life in general, family, ... read more

I trekked all over Playa shopping Tuesday, and enjoyed a relaxing breakfast being lulled by the soft breeze and ocean waves. The waiter serving me disappeared so I flagged down the busboy and asked for the "bill". He looked at me like HUH? "La cuenta" (Spanish for bill) I said & still he looked puzzled. Was he mesmerized by spinach stuck in my teeth maybe? So I tried gesturing & pretended to write with a pen to signify "cheque". I sang "cuenta" a few times too I think. NOTHING. So I asked him, "is my breakfast free today cause I'm the 10th customer today"? (good try) Nothing. What does a woman gotta do to pay her bill around here? After my wayward waiter returned, he explained the busboy is deaf. The people around me must have ... read more

SO, the food festival I was to attend in Playa, wow, yeah lots to tell, but how about I start with the fact my 12 year old daughter ended up back at CHEO again (in other words I am avoiding discussing one of the main reasons I came here; a major food event). OK, so as for Lara, so far they have run tests and it's inconclusive why she's having such major pain. The phone was out for a bit in our condo, and the internet failed at one point so I had NO idea how she was doing. Tough for a mommy that's taken her first trip away. I had left the girl's health cards with Al just in case...Hello? He didn't have to make USE of them!! It was a beautiful day here (even ... read more

"It takes all kinds to make the world go round; though perhaps some shouldn't go quite so far around as others" ~ Some days things can roll off my back; other days things get on my wick, and bad manners get on my wick. Yesterday I was people watching, in particular a big family hanging out on the beach. Nice enough people, but they were doing a lot of yelling. Not yelling in a mean way, more like, "Hey grab me a beer from the cooler", or "I'll join you in the ocean"...I am convinced many people believe they are alone in this world, and the rest of us occupying loungers a few feet away can't hear YOU when you holler at the top of your lungs. These aren't ornaments hanging off my head, they are ... read more

Yes my friends, life is a beach and I'm playin' in the sand!!! Ahhh....Sunday (Domingo in Spanish) was another fabulous but WINDY day. Small children had to be tied down yesterday ;) The big boats were bobbing and weaving and the ferry took longer than usual fighting the waves. I expect there were a few people tossing their cookies over the side (especially those that partake in the bar on the ferry!) Sunday was our quietest day yet - we enjoyed breakfast on the beach, swam in the pool, then lounged around beachfront taking it all in. There is a new family in a condo across from us, and they have a son about 10 years of age who doesn't have an inside or even a decent outside voice. It's a stream of yelling all the ... read more

"A journey is best measured in friends, rather than in miles." ~ Well here we are again, how are you guys??? My buddy Danielle has been fighting a major chest cold, so sadly I had the pleasure of my own company yesterday. We got to know each other quite well ;) I woke up very early, threw on my sundress and off I went for a mile walk on the beach. The music was playing from the cafes, and people were drinking Coronas at 9 am. You may not believe this, but I don't have that type of constitution (despite the Irish in me!). I have to wait till er...at least 10 am to have a margarita. ;) I ended up at the ferry dock watching the line-ups to take the massive ferry to Cozumel. Sheesh ... read more

“When a child is locked in the bathroom with water running and he says he's doing nothing but the dog is barking...call 911. ” ― Erma Bombeck I remember my mom had a book on motherhood by Erma Bombeck. I read it as a kid in the 70's before I really could understand what it was all about, but it resonated with me, and more so as I become a Mom. I realize now how important it is to have a sense of humor when raising children. Motherhood is NOT for the faint of heart that's for sure. Anyone that thinks that labor is over after the baby's born I say HA. The labor is just beginning. I may be thousands of miles away, but I have been hearing "mom, mom, MOM" around the pool here ... read more
