How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? Satchel Paige Well it was a fantastic birthday on the rippling magnificent turqoise shores of Playa. If one must turn a year older then one should do it here. I can't ever recall a birthday that I've never not spoken to mom & dad and my sister Cindy so I felt like a dog with two tails yesterday. One tail trying to enjoy the day but the other tail feeling there was a disconnect. We have free calls to Canada from our condo but for some reason today of all days, the condo was having phone issues. Al whisked me away for a walk in the morning; lord I thought it's hot at home but whewie, it was hot as in in capital ... read more

What a day we had in the beautiful beachside resort town of Akumal. About a 45 minute drive from Playa that Luis our friend had arranged for us. His friend had a king-size van that was able to drive all 8 of us to one of THE best places to snorkel and dive in the Riviera Maya. We were SO excited. To say this place knocked our socks off is an understatement (well my socks would have been knocked off had I been wearing any!) Plush green foliage, hedges & palm trees lined the drive in to the beach. It unfolds before your eyes this long beach with bars and places to rent lifejackets & snorkeling equipment. It has little cliffs and luxury small resorts built on either ends of the area. So once we were ... read more

¿Cómo estás? How are you?? Well Al & I didn't plant our feet on the ground until 8:30 am yesterday morning; that's late for this gal. But when we stepped out on our balcony those friendly palm trees waved to us & the ocean mumbled a low welcoming greeting :) Six fantastic days of weather without one single drop of rain. It's like the clouds couldn't summon up spit if they tried! We've been blessed with good family times without the worry of a ticking clock; the hours seem to ebb and flow away like a bottle bobbing in the ocean. Our afternoon started off with a frothy margarita that Odin delivered to me from the bar next door. Al took some pics of Odin bringing ... read more

North America July 2nd 2012

I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind. John Diefenbaker (From the Canadian Bill of Rights, July 1, 1960) We were proud Canadians yesterday here in Mexico. Tattoos and Canadian T-shirts ruled the day which brought lots of attention! Mexican independence day is huge here, and they were really thrilled to see us enthusiastically celebrating our country with pride. I am reallllly interested to see what the Americans will do on July 4th. They'd better have some fireworks and hoopla here which is a VERY VERY special and important day ... read more

HAPPY CANADA DAY EH! I love the Mexican locals who try to be funny always saying "eh" to us! And drum roll please, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DAD (CLEM, GRANDPA)! This is one of the first years I can remember we aren't spending it with him. But I know he's in good hands as he's visiting my brother Dan and his family at his cottage along with my sister Cin. Love to all of you too. Here's a side pic of Rory & Ava getting their "daytime" Canada attire on!! YAY CANADA our home & native land! This is a very brief blog (YES they do happen every once in a while so don't hit the floor!) I am sitting on our first floor balcony ovelooking the sea today on Domingo (Sunday) and it's very windy at ... read more

"May your time be filled with relaxing sunsets, cool drinks and sand between your toes." Yesterday was a banner day...up early to see the sunrise, then spent a part of the day photo-ing & videotaping Tonya's condos and finally some R&R. We had lunch back at Yan Ten; my gosh the chicken brochette was so tender you could cut it with a toothpick. Luis served us with margaritas, pina coladas, smoothies and all kinds of homemade salsas, chips, quesadillas and pico de gallo along with the chicken brochette with rice & salad & tortillas. All of that was served with a scoop of teasing us on the side! It was so fresh, flavorful and 7 of us ate for about $50 CDN. You can stay at a condo and eat cheaply my friends!! (And drink ... read more

It was a beautiful first official day here in Playa (Mexico) on Thurs. starting with that beautiful sunrise (see previous blog). As expected Rory & Ava found me on my lounger at 8am & we got sun-blocked & hit the pool. No one was around except the gardeners. What fun to have a pool all to yourself. Dad (Allan) got up and took some pictures and then we went to the cafe next door (Fusion) & enjoyed pancakes, French toast & oh lucky day, mimosas were 2for1 (champagne & orange juice). What an amazing start to a day, sitting with loved ones, being catered to, overlooking the ocean! We were thrilled when Tonya offered us her beautiful oceanfront condo, & last time we were here Al took some photos of one of her condos for her ... read more

Another sunrise, another new beginning There is just nothing as beautiful as seeing the sun rise over the ocean, with fingers of light playing through apricot clouds. Soon it will be a searing blue sky and the beach will come alive with music and people. (this is a photo over the Caribbean I took, Al's pics will surely be better.) It is quiet right now, a little past 7 am and the gardeners are sweeping the walkways and pruning the plants and cleaning the infinity pool & Jacuzzi. The colors of the plants and flowers here are spectacular; lush, vivid, blooming - makes you want to open your mouth and take a bite into the riches of this place called Playa. They take such loving care of this place and it shows. I wave to them, ... read more

Hola all, summer time's here and the living is easy! Well it will be easy in a little over 48 hours when we hit the beautiful shores of the Caribbean. Yep, we're heading back to Playa del Carmen (Mexico) & visions of cocktail umbrellas are dancing in my head ;) I've been writing a journal of some of our trips now and they are on this site (you can look at them by date and pressing "next entry" to see them in order. Hopefully you'll come along with us on our adventures! YES we are going back Mexico for 15 days. "Why in heaven's sake would anyone visit Mexico in the summer"? (Yes I just heard you ask yourself that out loud, raising the eyebrows of co-workers around you :) Well here goes... Every summer we've ... read more

How inappropriate to call this planet earth when it is quite clearly Ocean. Anyone that has spent any time at the ocean seems to have the same feeling I do about it - they love it. The ocean is calming, healing, soothing, invigorating and draws you back time after time. (I now have ocean sounds on my iPod to fall asleep to and let me say, it actually works.) For all that the ocean gives, she sure takes a beating from humans. In my daily walks along the beach in Playa del Carmen (MX), specifically first thing in the morning I would watch the beach workers rake up and thoroughly clean the beach from the day & night before. It's a grandiose effort when you think of the miles of beach in Playa. One of the ... read more
