Bogota had been at the top of my travel list for the past few years. As peace started to take hold in the country over the past 10-15 years (check out this url=http://www.economist.com/news/americas/21688936-juan-manuel-santos-seeks-support-peace-washington-new-plan-colombiaEconomist articlefor more details), I continued to hear more and more wonderful stories from travellers about their experience to this once “no go” zone. I wouldn’t be disappointed for three main reasons. One, the city has an extensive and diverse culinary scene. I was finally introduced to the Peruvian cuisine here! After such a wonderful introduction, I now have Lima at the top of my travel list. Two, while the weather forecasts called for considerable precipitation, we saw literally none. When I combined that with daytime highs around 20c, the weather was perfect. I am always astonished at how much of a ... read more

We were on the home stretch now with 170 km to the finish line. We were planning on staying at a town called Puttalam, just along the coast, for the first day (a 75 km ride), but good roads and a tail wind allowed is to reach there by 9:30, which was a personal best for this trip (actually the best riding we had this trip was from Dumbulla to Puttalam). Ironically, the worst roads we had were around the two major cities of Colombo and Kandy. With the wind still behind us and Shauna, for the most part, recovered from her illness, we headed direct south for the town of Chilaw. As we cycled along the coast, we could see the predominance of Christian towns through the area -- something we really hadn't seen to ... read more

We were now headed to two more of Sri Lanka's UNESCO World Heritage Sites back to back - Sigiriya and Anuradhapura. The ride out of Kandy was uneventful other than the roads and traffic were not much different than what we encountered entering Kandy. With no shoulders and rough tarmac, these would be the worst roads of our trip. That wasn't to change until we hit Dumbulla (actually home to yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site…). It is interesting to note that the worst roads of our trip were around Sri Lanka's two largest cities -- Colombo and Kandy. I guess with the new motorways (Sri Lankan now has a few true freeways -- Colombo to Galle and Colombo to Kandy) constructed recently the older roads are no longer as much of concern. Riding in Sri ... read more

As we were leaving our resort in Uda Walawae for Nuwara Eliyia, a tour bus showed up with Hebrew on the side it it. It made me wonder why they would do this give all of the terrorist attacks on the Jewish people over the years. To me, it looked like they were setting themselves up for a target -- remember Bulgaria in 2012… The hill country would be a nice change from the heat and humidity we had experienced to date. We travelled 170 kms and climbed 1,700 m to get to Nuwara Eliyia. Once we got into the mountains, it was a beautiful but slow drive taking us four hours to cover the 170 kms. On a funny side note, our young driver pulled out a large bottle of vodka on the ascent and ... read more

Against the doctors orders, I headed out on the road for Tangalle on Saturday morning. My energy level was good, but I just had this cough that just wouldn't not go away... At least, I had a good rest day behind me and a good cocktail of drugs to try and put this to rest. :-) On our way out of Galle, we stopped at an HSBC ATM to get some cash and to my pleasure the bills came out in 2,000 Rs (around $16 CAD) notes rather than the usual 5,000 Rs notes. This is an issue, because no one in this country has change! It is so bad I have to hide my small dollar bills (100s and 50s) when I pay for something, as the person I am transacting with will always ask ... read more

We were out of the gates at 5:30 complete with our new front and rear lighting system that was a marked improvement from our previous one. I teased Shauna that we could now start at 4:00 instead of 5:30 (half-hour before sunrise) in the mornings. You can imagine how that comment went over with her. :-) She still thinks getting up at 4:00 (time we get up to be ready for 5:30) to beat the traffic, heat, and humidity is criminal on our holidays. I always remind her whether she would like to ride from 5:30 to 7:30 or 11:00 to 13:00 (on the shorter days we are usually done be 11:00)… That usually ends the discussion. :-) Our ride out of Colombo (population 5.6M) wasn't too bad relatively speaking (remember I had to cycle into ... read more

As we prepared for our flight half way around the world, it dawned on me that this will be the longest flight in my life -- not in total time, but in flight time -- at 23 hours. I was just wondering how hangry(a combination of tired and hungry), as Shauna puts, she should get on a flight like this… We had a code-share flight with Air Canada and Sri Lankan Airlines, so logistically we were as well setup as any flight to Colombo from Canada could be with stopovers in Toronto and Paris between 3-5 hours. We were to even arrive in Colombo first thing in the morning. Note to self though… when flying overseas to a tropical destination during the winter make sure that any stopovers in northernly cities, like Paris, to make sure ... read more

Back to NYC. I hadn't been there since 2000 and never on my own terms (usually in tow behind a friend, who knew the city better than me). Shauna and I had a week, so we knew we had the time to see the city well. To change things up a bit, we stayed the first four days in West Harlem and the final three in Brooklyn (Downtown). Both of these neighbourhoods would give us a different feel and take on NYC, but not being too far from the action of Midtown. We would also find out that our accommodation dollar went further in those neighbourhoods. I am always in awe at the size and density of Manhattan. I can only think of Hong Kong Island as possibly being more densely populated. Once one gets down ... read more

A Race Against the Clock Enough with Boracay... After seeing the difference between White Beach and Bulabog Beach, I am glad I stayed on the Bulabog side. While it wasn't as pretty, it certainly didn't have the overdevelopment like White Beach. I had my longest ferry ride of the trip (four hours) from Caticlan, Panay to Roxas, Mindoro. We were 1.5 hours late, so I was going to be very pressed to make it to Pinamalyan before night fall (65 km). I couldn't help notice that while the ferry was boarding how may of the ferry workers had helmets on their heads (good) and flip-flops on their feet (bad). I'm not sure what the rationale is behind this, ... read more

KM 675 This is truly the Island Tour. On my first riding day from Costa Aguada Island Resort, I effectively travelled through three of them. It only ended up being a 40 km day by bike, but a lot more when I include the boat rides. I will have to take ferries eight times on this trip to visit the seven islands on my itinerary. They vary from the small canoe like boats (called bangkas) to car ferries (called RORO (roll-on roll-off)) . Iloilo was my first stop and my introduction to the island of Panay. Iloilo is the biggest city on the island with about 500,000 people. Like many of the other places I have visited to date in the Philippines, there is a quite the contrast between the old and new parts of town. ... read more
