Litchfield National Park - I’ll say it again… the boys are fantastic travelling such long distances in the car. One of the best games we’ve enjoyed is called Ruler of the Front Seat. We started this game from Day One and it’s still going. Each day one of the boys is the Ruler of the Front Seat. While they don’t physically get to sit in the front seat, the idea is that they get to make any family decisions for that day. Essentially, they are in the driver’s seat and have the control. When do we stop for morning tea? Where will we have lunch? What activity will we do today? We can all make suggestions but the deciding vote rests with the Ruler of the Front Seat. Of course, there has to be a little ... read more

Day 20 We left ‘crazy’ behind and headed up to Tennant Creek. We stopped off to view Devils Marbles, a truly unusual collection of boulders and rocks, some perched in impossible precarious positions. There’s a mystical calm in places like this and I can understand why parts of it are considered sacred by the local Aboriginals. Again, I found it hard not to take photographs at every turn, where each turn revealed a new angle and a new interesting shot. Just fantastic. Day 22 It was a relief to leave Tennant Creek. I thought the sound of dingoes howling at night was scary but that wasn’t as bad as hearing some of the locals screaming at each other in the main street. The less said the better. We had intended to stay at Elliott but the ... read more

Day 18 We did a number of sightseeing activities in and around Alice Springs, including having a local Aboriginal guide take us out on a nocturnal tour spotting Mala, Bettongs, and Bandicoots. Though, I think the highlight for the kids was hand feeding the rock wallabies that come down every night into the neighbouring campsite. For $1 a bag of feed, the kids had a ball feeding them and spotting the ones that were carrying joeys. Day 19 Well, today had it’s share of strange sights. We set off from Alice to reach Wycliffe Well, so a long driving day for us. We stopped at Ti Tree which looked to consist of little more than a pub and a police station. Fortunately, I had premade sandwiches so we just found a nice shady spot, Maarten set ... read more

Day 14 We found the ‘best’ way to see the West Macdonnell Ranges was to drive the Mereenie Loop from Kings Canyon to Glen Helen Gorge. I say ‘best’ as it was certainly the most direct route and saved us doubling back from Alice to see the ranges but it was by no means easy. The Mereenie Loop runs through Aboriginal land and requires a permit but that wasn’t the problem. The Mereenie Loop is unsealed road…4 hours of unsealed, corrugated road. It was bumpy (to state the obvious), but also very noisy meaning no one could talk or even listen to music. It was a relief to arrive at Glen Helen Resort; a ‘resort’ nestled below the deep orange cliffs and near the Glen Helen Gorge. Our relief was shortlived as I soon learned they ... read more

Day 12 We’ve arrived at Kings Canyon Resort and found that in the Northern Territory, the term ‘resort’ is used very loosely. Facilities are meagre, their ‘General Store’ holds less than our local service station (although there is a plethora of cheap tacky souvenirs) and their pool resembles a duckpond. Their washing machine did little more than wet the clothes, they all came out with the same orange dusty tinge they went in to the wash with. At $4 per load I didn’t really want to put them through again and I’m running out of daylight hours to get them dry in. Went looking for a light lunch and found they had a half reasonable café which charged quite unreasonable prices ($81 for lunch! What the..?) Still, we have a perfect site overlooking the Canyon, close ... read more

Day 9 - Sunday 10th June Well, I guess you could say I’m officially nuts as not even a sore throat and chest cold could stop me getting up before dawn and driving out to watch the sunrise over Uluru. Matthew joined me thus proving that madness is hereditary, but I was glad to have his company. There were still far too many tourists than is right for that hour of the day, making it difficult to get a shot of the Rock without a beanie or gloved hand in the way, but the hardest part was having to walk back through the carpark (frozen and hungry) and smell the bacon and eggs cooking from campervans parked there. Honestly, someone could make a fortune selling bacon and egg sandwiches and coffee to the crazy tourists who ... read more

Erldunda - Yulara

Published: June 9th 2012Oceania » Australia

Day 7 We've crossed the border into NT. Stayed overnight at Erldunda which was pretty uneventful. Have to say, I'm totally impressed by our 3 boys and how they cope with the long hours of driving, no fights, no complaints, no DVDs and not even a DS! They just cruise, so easy! We play games and listen to stuff, at the moment we're alternating between War of the Worlds (Matthew's choice) and Starlight Express (Daniel and Ryan's preference). Day 8 We arrived at Yulara Resort near Uluru today. It's quite a sprawling mini metropolis (compared to what we've been through so far). We're here for 4 nights so it'll be nice to stay put for a bit and take our time. We drove out to The Rock this afternoon to watch the sunset. Quite magical! The ... read more

Coober Pedy

We've just had our second day in Coober Pedy. I'm kind of glad I didn't post a blog straight away as my first impressions of the town were not great. It's rather a shanty town with as many closed abandoned buildings as there are open shops. However, I've found that much like the desolate landscape around Coober Pedy you have to chip away at the surface to uncover the gems in the town. One such gem is the place where we're staying, an underground B & B called Down to Erth, run by Rose and Alex. When we arrived and couldn't work out which house was theirs (there were no numbers or signs and the area somewhat resembled a quarry) Rose came out onto the road to wave us in. Last night they lit the woodfire ... read more
