New York City Day 77 - Monday 01.06.2009 So if you remember (many weeks ago now) we are at the HI-New York and the reception we had last night was crap. Because we had booked our 3 night stay over 2 different phone calls we were on separate reservations so had to leave one room for another - not a problem, we are flexible like that. The thing was, we had to check out by 11am but we could only check in at 4pm! Plus as we had about 10 bags each that we could put in their storage lockers but for the pleasure of $5 - lucky us! By this point we were just fucked off so we thought why not do just that. After a quick phone call to out next hostel we were ... read more
Boston, Via Salem (Massachusetts), Via Lowell (Massachusetts), Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York Day 70 - Monday 25.05.2009 So it’s Boston to Philadelphia with two pit stops along the way. First was the Salem where the Salem witch trials had taken place all those years ago. We went straight to the Salem Witch Museum and got there just as a tour was about to start. So how nice of them was it to let us in without paying (so we didn’t miss any of it) with the understanding we came back at the end and pay - hmmm, I believe this has happened to us before. Anyway the tour was cool with waxwork models, scary lighting and a very serious sounding narrator telling the story of Salem. Again though, we weren’t allowed to take photos - what do ... read more
Dodgeville (Wisconsin) - House on the Rock, Chicago, through Indiana, through Michigan, London Onterio - Niagara Falls, through New York, Boston Day 63 - Monday 18.05.2009 Monday morning and a fresh start to the week with us leaving Dodgeville to go to Chicago via The House on The Rock. Of course we thought Dodgeville was a brilliant name for the place and posed quite dodgily in front of their town sign before we left. Like I said before, The House on the Rock was written about in the fiction novel, American Gods which is one of Gem’s favourites. Basically the house is a weird and wonderful place built by this eccentric guy filled with everything imaginable for the purpose of challenging people’s senses, predominantly sight and sound. There was an infinity room, a China doll collection, ... read more
Vancouver, Banff, Calgary, through Montana, Via Fargo (North Dicota), through Minnesota, Dyersville (Iowa), Dodgeville (Wisconsin) Day 56 - Monday 11.05.2009 It was time to leave Vancouver and drive what we thought then was a long 9-hour drive to Banff. After our usual morning fuckeries and saying goodbye to Baby (by far the best thing here) we left at 1pm. It was second hangover day and as some of you might appreciate the toxins were definitely still leaving our bodies. We had to make a toilet stop at least every 30 minutes. With that and getting lost one million times, it was turning out to be a rather long drive - we were anticipated much longer than the Google Maps’ suggested 9 hours. Gem took the first 4 hours and then it was my turn. We were ... read more
Seattle, Vancouver (Canada) Day 49 - Monday 04.05.2009 We’re in Seattle or Se-tle as we like to pronounce it to fuck with the locals. We’ve only got one more day here so we wanted to fill it with Seattle-y things. Our itinerary consisted of seeing the Space Needle, going to Seattle’s aquarium and hiring a rowboat to fuck around on Lake Washington. The Space Needle which is basically the city’s viewing tower was rather expensive for what it was, we figured we were going to visit taller buildings in New York so we wouldn’t pay to go up it but why not go and visit it? It is after all, very iconic for the city. We took the obligatory twatty photos of ourselves, with and around the needle. Right next door was the science centre and ... read more
Day 42 - Monday 27.04.2009 Previously on Sarah and Gem’s travels…we are in San Fran, I am hungover (for a change) and Gem is on cloud nine as she has met Ky, aka Bird. We trotted off to go and explore the city and we headed for Haight - the old hippy district where apparently the summer of love kicked off. I took loads of pictures and we both generally soaked up the atmos trying to not do anything too strenuous as we were both knackered. We checked out Amoeba records, a mammoth CD shop that probably had every CD ever made available. Gem got very giddy and I thought it was cool too. We then went and chilled out at Golden Gate Park. This must also be known locally as “Drug Dealer Park” as we ... read more
Las Vegas, Via San Dimus, Santa Barbara, Via Guadalupe - Sand Dunes, Via San Luis Obispo, Via Cambria - Elephant Seals, Via Big Sur, Santa Cruz, San Fransisco Day 35 - Monday 20.04.2009 Righty Roo. It is officially party time as tomorrow is one of the most important days of the year - my birthday so we packed up and fucked off to Vegas baby. Coachella was still fookin hot, team that with restless nights in a shitty tent made the thought of sleeping all the way there seem brilliant. That’s exactly what I did and god knows how long later we arrived at the Wild Wild West Hotel. This “hotel” was no Bellagio and there was certainly nothing wild or western about it. It was basically just a glorified motel run by right mardy bastards ... read more
L.A, Indeo - Coachella Day 28 - Monday 13.04.2009 So the plan for our day in Hollywood was of course to go to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Mann’s Chinese Theatre. As soon as we got there however and parked up around 11.55am (this information IS important) we realised what the date was, and we actually needed to drop off the car TODAY, at (you guessed it) 12pm - Brilliant. We had completely gotten our days mixed up due to flight information confusion about Gem’s bro and friend Gary, who were coming to meet us the next day. We rang the hire company and managed luckily to get an extension for a day, for no extra money - winner! Thinking about this though it was probably because we had spent so much money with ... read more
Santa Fe, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Via Sedona, San Diego, Via Corona, Via Torrance, LA Day 21 - Monday 06.04.2009 So I learnt a little fact today - New Mexico is in the mountains (I knew that already) and so the altitude here is quite high (that is no the fact, wait for it). I learnt that this is the reason my nose hasn’t stopped bleeding for 3 days - lovely. I thought id start this week’s blog off with a bit of useless information for you all. I sit writing this while I'm sat at the Grand Canyon waiting for the sun to set - it’s beautiful. But that is for making you all jealous later! So Monday morning; we wanted to get a good start on our drive to the Grand Canyon as it was ... read more
New Orleans, Austin, El Paso and Santa Fe. Day 14 - Monday 30.03.09 Morning arrived in New Orleans; too late for free pancakes but just early enough to go and experience some culture. Gaz who we has sat chatting to the night before had learnt of a specific place in New Orleans that suffered from the most devastation when hit by hurricane Katrina and the signs of devastation are still there today 4 years later. We definitely wanted to experience a small piece of this history so we drove off with Gaz in tow to the lower 9th ward. It wasn’t much of a drive away but when we hit that specific area the contrast between that and just outside was massive. For the most part of it there were just footprints of houses left surrounded ... read more
