Hi, Today I woke up nice and early to walked to the bus station to book up our tickets to Montevideo, it was a 2 hour bus drive and cost about $300 peso. We had a free breakfast of bread and marmalade. It was ok, standard breakfast in SA, I can’t wait for a bacon sandwich!! Our bus was at 1100 so we just packed up, got the last of the good Wi-Fi and headed to the bus station; we also made sure that we could book up another night here in Hostel el Espanol for when we come back in a day as it was a good hostel (and the cheapest one in Colonia). The bus was no problem, just that it stops a lot and ends up with people stood close to you, this ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento July 26th 2015

Hello Family and Friends, Today we were leaving for Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay by ferry. We bought the ticket in the week for about £50 return as it was cheaper to come back to BA and then take a bus up to Iguassu, instead of taking the bus to Salto and then to Iguassu. Pablo and Romi kindly offered to drop us off at the ferry terminal at 7am (they are so kind!) the trains do run at this time, but as it was dark they said it would have been unsafe. As we drove through the city at 6.30am, the nightclubs were still busy with people coming out and even people still queuing to get in some places!!!!! Literally a city that never sleeps! We arrived at the terminal an hour before the ferry departed ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires July 21st 2015

Hey Party People, Buenos Aires is literally a city that never sleeps! It is also expensive along with the rest of Argentina. We were lucky enough to be offered a room from the couch surfing website for a total of 6 nights by this lovely couple (Romina and Pablo) who are in their mid-30’s. When we arrived into BA airport, Pablo had offered to pick us up from the airport, which is a good 1h30 from their house! When we arrived to their place in Lomas de Zamora they gave us a whole house to stay in by ourselves-amazing! They have their own house at the front, which is divided with the house they gave us by a small garden and swimming pool. That night they cooked us a traditional Argentinean BBQ with wine that we ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires July 20th 2015

Hello All, Today we had an early wake up as we had to walk to Los Heroes to get the airport bus into the airport. The hostel we are staying at offer a deal to the airport for $15,000 peso for 2 people, but the bus is a 15 min walk and 1,500 each, big saving. We were flying to Buenos Aires today and very excited to be going there, we are couch surfing here so hoping it will go well. Our direct flight is at 1230, it takes two hours and was about £110. The bus would have taken 24 hours+ via Mendoza and is about the same price as the flight. The flight, like most things in South America was delayed, only by 2 hours but we had to find Internet to let our ... read more

Hola, This area was recommended to us by Cristian, who said as we only have one day left to see something other than Santiago we should make the 2-hour bus trip to the port of Valparaiso. It use to be the leading merchant port through out the Pacific Ocean routes, however since the 1906 earthquake and opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, the popular use of the port and the financial income that went with it declined. Today it is used for the cruise ships and fruit exports. The city was given an UNESCO, so being marked as a world heritage site and also being voted cultural capital about 10 years ago the tourism has boomed. Neil and I spent the day here wandering around the cobbled streets. The best parts come when you take ... read more

Hi Bloggers, friends and family, We seem to be out of sync with everyone in this hostel. We went to bed about 12 last night but we were the only people in the 8 bed dorm when we went to sleep but when we woke up it was full, we got up about 8am and went online and got breakfast from the hostel. (It’s only 900 peso for eggs and toast so £1) When we got back to the room about 10am everyone was still asleep so they must have been out partying last night, very jealous!! We had booked 2 more night at Casa de Roja, but in the 10 bed dorms, as it was cheaper. We changed rooms and decided to head out for the day exploring the city. We were meant to meet ... read more

Hi Everyone, So after the mess that was yesterday, we woke in our freezing cold room, well according to Vick I was toasty. We got our free breakfast, of tea or coffee and 2 biscuits not the breakfast we were looking for bud it was something. Also the owner offered to drive us to the bus terminal so we were happy. We packed up and soon were at the bus terminal, so far in South America we have found that the buses all run very late, both turning up and getting to your destination. Today was no different, the bus was about 30 mins late and it ended up 4 hours late!! YES 4 HOURS!! The seats on the buses are really good called semi-cama, which is half bed, the drive was amazing, the views are ... read more

Hello Party People, We woke up early as Vick wanted to wash her hair, if she had done it the night before she would have got a bad neck?? (Women, Vick said she didn’t have a hairdryer, so all you women will understand). Also we wanted to cook a pasta salad for the BBQ, Sergio, (our couch surfing host in Chile) wanted to have one today in the mountains, which sounded quite cool. Once we got downstairs and on the Wi-Fi our terrible day started. Sergio said he was going to be at our hostel at 10:00, however we had a message on whatsapp saying that he couldn’t get through the border until later in the day, so he would let us know what time he would be here. We carried on and cooked up the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza July 12th 2015

Hi All, We spent 4 days in Mendoza because we managed to get the bargain of the year for an 8-dorm hostel. We didn’t do a whole lot in Mendoza apart from drink decent wine and watch TV series. So we arrived in Mendoza about 9.30am on Sunday; the coach was meant to arrive at 6.15am so I don’t know how we could have been 3 hours later when there weren’t any long stops along the way. But anyway, after the total bus journey from Cafayate to Mendoza was 19 hours for a total of £65 we made it. When we arrived we knew the direction to the Itaka hostel we had booked-it was about 1.5 miles from the station but we thought we would stretch our legs and get breakfast on the way. We had ... read more

Hi All, We had to check out of backpackers in Cafayate by 1030, we stayed in the warmth of the room until as late as possible. We had the normal free breakfast of bread and jam. (Sick of it) The owner is cool and said that, as our bus is not until 1400 we could store our bags in the hostel until we wanted to go. We decided to go to the cheese factory, Cafayate is famous for its “Cabra de queso” (Goats cheese), it was 15 peso’s to try around 8 different cheeses. I love goat’s cheese but Neil is not a fan as much, however he really liked them as they were very creamy and not dry like people think. (Also we only got charged 10 peso’s instead of 15…love a bargain) We caught ... read more
