And so to Queensland, the last stop on our Australian tour. We flew into Cairns and then up to Port Douglas. It is a little town up in the North of Queensland, pretty close to the Great Barrier Reef. Ciaran got a wee scuba dive in and got out on the reef which was amazing. Pretty much every fish out of "Finding Nemo" was swimming about and there was a good auld shark having a sleep on the sea bed. The diving guys got particularly excited when a couple of "Devil Rays" swam past too. Meanwhile Deirdre got her head showered and didn't have to listen to all the rubbish he was spinning about diving gear and underwater cameras. Whilst in Port Douglas we stayed in an “Eco-Resort,” which consisted of a load of cabins in ... read more

Got to Darwin early enough and checked it out. Vibrant young exciting city, but you can’t go swimming in the sea. We reckoned that we could see big Salties (Estuarine Crocodiles) swimming the harbour below the cliff we were standing upon, so we went and had a Vietnamese instead and chilled out. Next day was our trip to the Kakadu National Park. It is a huge national park 2 hours from Darwin. It has spectacular natural scenery and wildlife, including millions of birds and reptiles. It also contains some phenomenal indigenous sites that can be visited, in particular the interesting aboriginal rock art paintings. There are a few that you can visit within the park and are easily accessible. We went to see one called Ubirr, guided by a local indigenous tour guide. He explained the ... read more

Back down the coast now, headed firstly to Coral Bay again, because it was so beautiful. Got another wee snorkel in and chilled out on the beach. Beautiful spot. Then onto Hamelin, just at the entrance to Shark Bay. On the way though, we couldn’t resist stopping in Carnarvon that has an international space museum. It was one of the international stations that tracked the Apollo space missions. It was a good place to stop and had a few artefacts about the space missions including a lunar space laser machine that you could climb into and pretend to drive. We had stopped in Hamelin briefly on the way up the coast, and just couldn’t get enough of the Stromatolites. They are extremely interesting from a geological perspective, but not really much to look at. They are ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Exmouth August 21st 2014

Exmouth is a wee tourist town at the top of the Ningaloo Reef and has some quality marine animals. During the cold war the US army built a military base there and it is the site for 13 massive towers that transmit Very Low Frequency radio waves (VLF) to the submarines. I think it can contact any submarine anywhere in the world. Anyway before the Americans showed up this place was pretty desolate and cut off from the rest of the world. Now it is a tourist hub. Ciaran went for a dive on the first day at the Navy Pier. It is a big pier built by the Americans for the army base, and apparently is consistently in one of the top ten diving sites in the world. Well, it was the best diving site ... read more

Back to Perth and rented a wee campervan to head up the West Coast of Australia. We expected to get a wee trampy van, but it was like living in a 5-star hotel, with lights and a plug for charging your iPhone. It even had a wee fridge! Headed North via the charity shop where we picked up Trivial Pursuit, Australian Young Player’s edition. Best Purchase we made in Australia. First stop 243kms up the road to Ledge Point, then another 351kms up to Kalbarri, a pretty national park on the coast. We ventured along the Road of death (named by Deirdre who felt that it was a wee bit dangerous) to see “nature’s window,” a rock formation that perfectly frames the picturesque Gorge behind it. Quality spot and worth risking our lives for it. This ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalgoorlie August 13th 2014

Next stop Kalgoorlie, a town in the Goldfields in Western Australia. This spot was central to the goldrush in the late 1800’s and was where Ciaran’s Great Great Grandfather came out with his brothers and opened a drapery business before returning to Ireland in the 1900’s. It turns out that they were quite a big name in the town and the local historian had loads of information on them for us. We visited the old house where they lived and found the grave where one of the Brennans is buried. Also got to see the goldmine “SUPERPIT,” which is Australia’s largest open mine. It was really amazing and made Deirdre want to put on a yellow hat and drive a big monster truck. Deirdre's highlight though was the skimpy bar. Google it…... read more

And so to Perth, where we stayed with Niall + Hannah in Fremantle. Looked after rightly by them! All started with a home cooked meal prepared by Hannah! Next day we explored Fremantle, stumbled upon the monument dedicated to Bon Scott, who lived in Fremantle, and then headed into Perth. Explored the city and started searching for Brennan relatives who moved out here in the late 1800’s. We visited the old “House of Brennan” department store, which is now disappointingly a shoe shop with none of the old features. Had an excellent night in the Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle and sampled a few of their finest, which was great preparation for the next morning – a trip across to Rottnest Island on the Express Ferry. The Ferry was a bit of a vomit comet. They ... read more

Squeezed in a wee breakfast in Ewan + Aileens’ s favourite hangout “Say Grace.” Quite possibly the best breakfast we have had in Australia. In fact possibly the second best breakfast in the world, after an Ulster fry of course. Next off to Adelaide via Mt Gambier, where we met up with Amy’s sister Bridie Tierney (the last Neeson we met on our travels) and got to see the marvelous blue lake, which in Winter is more of a grey-blue, but was spectacular all the same. It goes from Grey- to green – to Blue and nobody is actually sure why it changes colour. We weren’t far from Coonawarra, a wine region just over the Victoria/ South Australia border. Wine regions will become something of a trend for us over the next few days. Picked up ... read more

A short trip now to see the Neesons in Nareen – Country Victoria. Got there just in time for the final day of the “Sheepvention” – an agricultural show in a town called Hamilton. We had a quick tour round, where we bumped into Amy Tierney, another member of the Neeson clan. We were only in Sheepvention for a short time, but we got to see the highlights, in particular the winning Sheep Dog – “Package,” who was definitely the best one we saw, albeit a little bit savage, and also the most expensive ram in the Auction. I don’t think he had a name, but he sold for $22000!!! He was a Pol (which means he has no horns and is a favourable trait for breeding) and also he had good “sperm lines.” You can ... read more

Off now to the Great Ocean Road. Started the trip with a flat tyre, so only got a short distance along the road before we had to ditch in Torquay for the night. The Great Ocean Road is a quality drive, and also where they filmed “Round the twist,” a kids TV show about a ghost in a lighthouse we used to watch. Had to go there. Then stopped off at the 12 apostles for the awesome scenery factor – the grotto was a good one. Along the way Deirdre drove off road up a death defying cliff because she wanted some excitement. It was Ciaran’s idea to see some real life wild Koalas. Survived Deirdre’s thrill trip of death and Ciaran got to see his own Koala bear that he found all by himself and ... read more
