Next day we headed for Hobart. It was a 4-hour drive and we need somewhere to break up the drive. We were really lucky to stumble upon the Marakoopa caves. We were even luckier to just make the 12 o’clock tour and luckier still as the caves were amazing and we got to see some glow worms. We were really unlucky when we came out and realised some arsehole had stolen my camera tripod. Tried to find it, but it was long gone. Ah well. (BTW, glow worms aren’t actually worms, but the larvae of the Fungus Gnat). Arrived in Hobart and next day went to the Museum of Old and New Art (the MONA). It’s an art gallery/ Museum on an island in the centre of Hobart. It is pretty cool and quirky, with loads ... read more

Early start and trip to the airport to head to Launceston (4.30am start). Arrived in Launceston and immediately headed for our first destination – Cradle Mountain. Stopped of in a quaint wee town called Deloraine – this is where we saw our the platypus just cruising about the river. Quality spot. Then on we went up and up the mountain range. Cradle Mountain is absolutely teeming with wildlife. We went for a quick wee walk once we arrived and met our first Pandemelons – wee small wallaby things that look like furry basketballs. Next appeared the Wombats – they were everywhere. As a result there is wombat do-do everywhere. It is quite distinctive and looks like little mounts of brown coal scattered around the place. Oh and when Ciaran got back and took off his shoe ... read more

Today was a very special day! It was the first day of our monster trip around Australia. Oh and it was Deirdre’s birthday. We got up seriously early and got one of the first trains to the airport. Flight was amazing, we were on the right side of the airplane for the views of Uluru and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). Got to the resort, got settled and then headed to see the Sunset over Ayers rock. There is a bit of a divided opinion with people that have been there. Some say it is one of the most beautiful natural rock formations that they have seen, “mate”. Others say “It’s just a rock, mate.” We thought that it was spectacular. It also has important cultural significance, and up close the rock has lots of formations and ... read more
