Warnemunde & Rostock, Germany --- July 18,2011 There was a trip to Berlin which we passed on. The trip was exhausting for those that took it, 3 hours on bus to arrive in Berlin and then a 3 hour return tour; with the tour guides talking all the time. Why do they think that they have to talk all the time, some quiet particularly on the return trip would have been appreciated. However upon their return, one of the ship's bands was on deck signing songs from the 60's and 70's with a large number of the staff out to welcome them back as they walked up the gangway. We chose to go into Rostack which was founded over 800 years ago. The city's medival character is very visible with its old towers, looming forfications, garbled ... read more

Copenhagen, Denmark --- July 15 – 18, 2011 We arrived in Copenhagen to be welcomed by a representative from Regent Seven Seas and a light drizzle. Since we could not get into our hotel room at that time we took off to begin our exploration of the city. One sight that is visible throughout the city is a tall church steeple with on outside spiralling staircase. Construction of the church began in the 1690’s and dragged out over a number of years thereafter. Half of the climb is within the bell tower with the upper half on the outside for a total of 398 steps up and the same number coming down. The calves on Mare’s legs were sore for the next 2 days. One oddity at the hotel 2 of the restaurants were closed because ... read more

St. Petersburg, Russia --- October 27, 2010 Our visit to St. Petersburg was akin to a 100 yard dash. We raced through and past a number of interesting buildings, palaces, museums and churches but didn’t have enough time for most to get other than to get a brief taste. The conclusion is that I want to return to this city and spend more time discovering its treasures. On the front page of the English version of the St. Petersburg Times was a prediction of traffic gridlock in 2011. Like a lot of predictions events have moved faster than forecast, if St. Petersburg does not have gridlock in the center of the city it is as close to it as it can be; but then 2011 is only 2 months away. One of the nice things about ... read more

Istanbul, Turkey ---- October 23, 2010 Istanbul means traffic, history, east meets west, peddlers and bargaining. The population of Istanbul is estimated to be 15 million or half of Canada’s population cramped into one sprawling city, hampered with ancient narrow one direction twisting streets. To put this into perspective you haven’t seen grid-lock until you have seen Istanbul. There are only 2 bridges over the Bosphorus separating the Asian side from the European side of Istanbul. Total credit has to be given to our bus drivers who navigated the narrow streets squeezing by seeming less than an inch from double parked cars. When we arrived our tour guide welcomed us to Istanbul and said that the drive to our hotel would take between 1 to 5 hours depending on traffic. He was only partially kidding. Our ... read more

Aqaba, Jordan --- October 21, 2010 When one is flying from Dubai to Aqaba and look out the window you now have the ultimate picture to define desolate. This is some of the most inhospitable terrain, sand for as far as you can see only broken with some of the most rugged mountains around. This is a land where humans were never intended to live. Jordan has only 61 miles of territory along the Red Sea and Aqaba is their main port. Just across the bay is Israel so there is a fairly obvious police and military presence. From our balcony at the Intercontental we could look across and see the lights on in Aqaba’s sister city in Israel. A few years ago a couple of terrorists blew themselves up in 2 hotels in Amman, the ... read more

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - October 18, 2010 Due to the cancelation of our visit to Nepal we flew from Chaing Mai, had a fuel stop in Bombay India and finally landed in Dubai. The total flight time was about 6 hours; fortunately we picked up 3 hours in time zones. Our first stop in Dubai was to take some pictures of the Sail Hotel then off to the Dubai Mall to take the elevator up the Tower 124 floors in 60 seconds. The Tower is the highest building in the world and can be seen from 90km away. Some of the pictures taken from the viewing gallery will give you some idea of the construction and different buildings in Dubai. If the buildings in Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo were eye-catching they are also at least ... read more

Chiang Mai, Thailand - October 16, 2010 Our residence in Chiang Mai is the Dusit D2 Hotel right downtown and on Chang Klan road where every night they have a night bazaar. The stalls begin to show around 3 pm, and the peddlers show-up around 6pm and set out their wares, by 7pm the action has started and continues to midnight. When you venture forth in the morning all of the stalls are gone only to re-appear the next day. Mare did some bargaining but the king of bargaining has to be Carl who not only haggled a peddler down from 1,600tb down to 500tb for a knockoff watch and then followed this up by getting a drugstore to drop the price of some bandages by 100tb. I had heard that the King of Thailand was ... read more

October 13, 2010 --- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia On this trip I should mention that we have been joined by a very special passenger Winifred a cute little bear who is travelling around the world with her grandmother Elizabeth. Winifred has her own passport and has adopted a baby bear from Japan to join her on this adventure. When one refers to this part of the world, you recognize Singapore but not often Kuala Lumpur. Singapore is located on a tiny corner of Malaysia. The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur. One of the first things that strike a visitor from most Western counties is the buildings and the construction everywhere. The biggest difference is that it almost appears that they must have a continual architectural contest to design and build different buildings. The tall box or ... read more

Kota Kinabula, Malaysia (Borneo) October 11, 2010 Just what the doctor ordered, - - after multiple plane rides, sightseeing bus rides, a beautiful place to rest, relax and recharge the batteries. We are at the Rasa Ria Shangri-la Resort Hotel. The Conrad in Tokyo was impressive but it is a city hotel, here there is a good size Jacuzzi tub on our balcony, lounge chairs etc. this should give one some idea of quality of the rest of the accommodations. In addition the staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located about ½ hour away from the city in 400 acres of natural and landscaped surroundings part of which is a wildlife reserve for raising orangutans and re-introducing them to the wild. On Sunday the 10th we visited the reserve. I have to say ... read more

October 7, 2010 - Tokyo One hears about the ‘Bullet Train’, but one has to take it to really understand both how fast it goes (average speed is around 225 to 250 mph) and how smooth the ride is. It took about 2 hours from Kyoto to Tokyo a distance of about 500 km. The working population of Tokyo including people that commute from the suburbs is about 14 million, almost half of Canada’s population. We were met at the train station by our guides, our guide spent several years in Vancouver as a student so she had no problem relating to a bunch of Canadians. Our first stop was a large park which has a Shinto shrine. Perhaps I should investigate the Shinto religion more since on one side of the path as we entered ... read more
