The Three Gorges Dam as a topic has been debated and will continue to be a topic of discussion. It never would have happened in a democratic country. The dam is the largest in the world, 7,500 feet long, 600 feet high, costing $60 billion to build. The dam created the worlds largest reservoir, submerged 13 cities, 140 towns, 1,352 villages. Proponent of the dam point to flood control, drought control, and increase hydroelectric power. There are locks to enable ships to be raised or lowered so they can continue their voyage along the river. In 2015 they will have completed construction on a giant elevator to also raise and lower smaller ships.

We had a brief tour of Yichang a city that was transformed from a sleepy town into a city with the construction of the dam. The most interesting part of the tour was when the guide talked about education. High school stats at 7AM and finishes at 10PM, 6 days a week.
