Hello there, I got home yesterday but I wanted to wrap up this blog with a proper entry. I really appreciate everyone "taking" this journey with me. Even though I rode solo, it did feel like I had companions the whole time. And one of the many beauties of traveling alone is cementing in your mind and heart how important the people in your life are (which is all of you!). All the best, Matt ... read more

Greetings from Savannah, Georgia! I spent the last day touring the northern parts of Florida. I started out in the western panhandle, went to Tallahassee, Florida State University, and then across central Florida to Jacksonville and Saint Augustine. For those of you in New Jersey, I hear its quite cold up there. Sorry, it is mid-70s here with a great breeze. So Saint Augustine is the oldest city in America. To be exact, its the oldest continuing city in America. To be more exact, it is the oldest European city in America! There were people living here long before the ships appeared on the horizon. Some people confuse Jamestown, Virginia as the oldest American settlement. It was actually the oldest English settlement. Saint Augustine did not become an English territory until the Treaty of Paris ended ... read more

Greetings from outside of Tallahassee, Florida. I am staying in the Lake Talquin State forest which is gorgeous. Honestly, my favorite thing in the south is the trees. The Talquin state forest, abundant in towering pines, connects the track of land between Lake Talquin and the Ochlockonee River. It is a perfect spot to take a load off, reflect on New Orleans and look forward to more adventures. We spent the last two days in New Orleans. Shaun Hollinger was able to join me to share the experience. It was nice to have someone to spend time with and share the experiences. New Orleans was the place to have a companion. To be honest, I have been having a hard time trying to figure out how I can give you a feel for what New Orleans ... read more

Highway 61 is the blues highway. It runs from New Orleans north into Memphis and then through St. Louis on into Iowa, Minnesota and on up into Canada. Bessie Smith's life ended on Highway 61. Elvis Presley's life started on Highway 61. According to legend, Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads of 61 and 49. Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered a few blocks off of Highway 61. For Bob Dylan, Highway 61 was the true symbol of freedom, a chance at independence and an escape from his local stop in Hibbing, Minnesota. According to BBC interviewer, Robert Shelton, Dylan "traveled" highway 61 through the radio as a youngster. Says Shelton, "a lot of great basic American culture came right up that road and that river. So sets the stage for ... read more

So I am in Arkansas right now. It is just after sunrise and I am in a place I can only describe as "Trucker Heaven" here on the other side of the Mississippi River. The look, the smell, the feel, the people, did I mention the smell? I have a lot to share from a full day yesterday but I need to start this with a most recent story. So I got into my hotel room at about midnight last night. I needed to crash so I checked in grabbed one bag, my laptop, a change of clothes, and headed up to my room (202). First things first, the key didn't work so I had to walk back downstairs. The woman at the counter forgot to authorize my key... ok... happens. Go back up to my ... read more

It is early in the morning and I am preparing to head south out of Nashville this morning to the Jack Daniel's Distillery. Yesterday was spent in an around the city of Nashville. I went to Vanderbilt University, the Parthenon in Centennial Park, went to the museum, walked around downtown Nashville, got some great BBQ food, went into the local record shops, bought some cds, (met my Scientology friend), hung out in the Nashville Public Library, did the free tourist attractions, hung out at a tiny corner cafe, and called it an early night to prep for the trip out. I broke the 1,000 mark on the odometer! I celebrated with a 24cent bottle of Ohana Punch! I bought an Elvis Gold Records collection. Down here, Elvis finally makes sense! I never understood him back at ... read more

Hello there. It is before 10 am in Nashville, TN. I probably won’t publish this until later because the Internet signal is really shoddy here. So yesterday was a full day. I woke up in Charleston, WV and spent my morning downtown. The weather wasn’t agreeing (mid thirties and rainy, Brandon). The town was slow to wake up so I wasted away the first hour hanging out in the library before walking the streets and checking out some of the cafes. Again, found it very hard to find people. My only friend in Charleston was a homeless guy that I bought coffee and gave him the change. Yeah, I had to buy a friend. Charleston really is a cool town with a striking dichotomy between small town and big city. Here are some of the ways ... read more

Good morning! I wanted to upload some pictures in my awesome hotel room last night but Motel 6 charged $3 for Internet and I would have had to walk ALL the way around the building to the front desk for an access card. Forget that. It is Friday morning and I am sitting in a cubicle at the Kanawha Public Library using their Internet for free! Gotta be smart ;) So, first off, I want to say there are several disadvantages to starting a road trip on Christmas Day: 1) Gas stations that claim to be open "24 Hours" are not open 24 hours. My first gas stop scheduled for Hershey PA. got pushed back four exits as I went 0-3 on my first three gas stops (I pulled a Melky Cabrera). Each one was closed ... read more
