June 17, 2012 First of all, Feliz dia de Padre! We got to sleep in again! :D We finally got up and moving around 11 in the morning. We went to Sr. Daniel's, bad some breakfast, and then headed out to the museum called Museo Rafael Larco Herrera. The collection at this museum talked about the ancient civilizations of Peru. All of the artifacts (the collection has over 40,000 pieces!) were found in tombs. The first room we visited was nothing but people's faces. They were sorted by facial expression for the most part. There was a case full of scared people, a case full of sad people, etc. It was interesting because all the pottery here was used as some kind of "vessel" for either drinking things or storing things. Some of the facial pottery ... read more

June 16, 2012 HELLLLLOOOOOOO SLEEP! After such a long (but fun!) night out with Sr. Daniel's family, we slept in for a bit and then went to have breakfast. It was wonderfully colorful-- a giant bowl of fruit! Then we headed off to the school for the morning because Aimee and Erin had their culture class. Meredith and I didn't have much to do, so we brought our computers along and typed typed typed away, Facebook'd a bit, and took some photos. Well, that got really boring and repetitive after about an hour, so we decided to head out for a walk! (On our way out, the gentleman at the door was very concerned about us leaving, and he kept saying, "Be very careful!") There's a market (literally) across the street from the school. So, after ... read more

June 15, 2012 Friday morning, much like any other, began with breakfast and heading to school. However, after our first class ended at 10:15, Yanina told us that we would not have any more classes for the day because we were leaving to go somewhere. So, we waited for Sr. Daniel to come get us (which was around 11:25, so we could have taught our second class), and we left to go to the fortress at the port in Callao called Castillo de Real Felipe. This was the port where the Peruvians fought for their independence from Spain in the mid-1800's. We went to the top of The King's Tower, which is in the middle of the fortress and overlooks the entire port and mountains. We were able to see all the way over to Mira ... read more

June 14, 2012 Thursday morning started off just like any other day, except there was warm water and no electricity problems! :D FANTASTIC. I started off in a first grade classroom, Gedeon. This classroom was so much better than the other first grade classroom. There was more classroom management from one of the other teachers in the classroom. These students were able to get through more material and learn more vocabulary words than the other classroom I was in for this grade. However, this group was still very mobile while I was trying to teach. Though, I was very pleased with how they reacted to the material and applied what they knew. I also got to work with the fourth and fifth grade students. The fifth graders are such a joy to work with because the ... read more

June 13, 2012 Hello again! Sorry I haven't written in a few days! So, on Wednesday we started out the day with totally warm water! YAY! But then the electricity went out. Buuuh. Last night, Sr. Daniel and a few other gentlemen talked it through and the reason that the warm water wasn't working was becuase there wasn't enough pressure. (Apparently the warmth of the water depends on the pressure in the tank on the roof.) Then it was off to breakfast for the day and to school. I had some students today on the first floor (so first grade equivalency) who were rambunctious as ever! I couldn't believe it. They were in the Moises (Moses) classroom. Once again, the difference between the school system here and the school system in the United States has proven ... read more

June 12, 2012 We woke up this morning to (still) freezing cold water for the shower. It wakes us all up SO fast! After the morning ritual of trying to get all the girls through the shower, we headed over to Sr. Daniel's where we had breakfast. We CocoPuffs, yogurt, avocado sandwiches, and cheese sandwiches. For those of you that know anything about me, you know that I HATE dairy products. However, I sucked it up and ate the yogurt with my cereal. (The yogurt here is really weird because it doesn't have to be refigerated. I think that means more preservatives?) After breakfast we headed to the school becuase Meredith, Erin, and I all had to teach at 9:30 a.m. As we walked towards the school, there were students in the escuela secundaria leaning out ... read more

June 11, 2012 OK, so there are a few things one must know in order to survive Lima. 1. People don't stop at stop signs. "Pare" means nothing. (Therefore, look both ways multiple times before crossing the street!) 2. Expect to see dogs in the streets. They're harmless, no pasa nada. 3. There are lines on the road to indicate lanes, but drivers don't use them. The whole road is fair game. 4. Don't do Zumba in your apartment at night with the lights on. People peak in the windows and stare. 5. People stare contently if you don't have dark brown hair. Get used to it. We woke up this morning to meet Sr. Daniel for breakfast before we went to the school to meet with the English teachers Yanina y Sofia. They showed us ... read more

June 10, 2012 Hey, all: I'm just finishing off my second day here in Peru! :D It's been quite the experience already since I ended up forgetting my plug adapter at home on the kitchen counter. Ugh.). I arrived to Lima last night about a half hour early on my flight from El Salvador. My flights were long and uncomfortable. I completely forgot about going through immigration, so all my papers and passport were neatly packed away in the bottom of my backpack. I got up to the counter (after finding the documents) only to have the gentleman tell me that he needed my plane ticket stub. Well, that was completely lost inside my purse. After a few moments of digging, he told me just to forget about it. Jaja. Oh well. Then I began the ... read more
