We´re in Santiago, Chile for just a day and a half, so we´re off this morning to explore as much of the sights as we can. So far so good... we found a great little neighborhood for dinner last night and had some excellent sushi . A welcome change after the mountains of beef we have been eating. Will catch up with the rest of the blog tomorrow when we get back to LA. Leaving tonight on a red eye to Atlanta, and then back to La La Land by noon on Sunday. Hate to see the trip end... it has [View Full Entry]

Day 2 - Santiago Our last day! Determined to make the most of it, we set out on foot with a big agenda. We hopped on the subway, which was the nicest subway we’d ever been on, anywhere. Totally clean, well, lit, and with stores lining the underground tunnels. We walked all around the government buildings, which were actually really pretty. Then we made our way to the shopping district, where we browsed around and watched some wild street performers. It was a gorgeous day, perfect for walking, which was good since we had a lot of ground to cover. We [View Full Entry]

Our ride over the Andes begins.
The Andes as seen from Mendoza. Hard to believe we will be going over them in a double decker tour bus! Yeeeeeehaw!
Bus Ride - Mendoza to Santiago We asked for a 7:00 wake up call because we had to catch the bus to take us over the Andes into Santiago, Chile. The call came, and bleary eyed, we packed up all our stuff and waited for our breakfast. We waited and waited, annoyed because they were supposed to bring it at 7:30, and it wasn’t there, and we were going to be late. It wasn’t until we called downstairs to inquire, that we realized our wakeup call had been an hour early! Nice! At least it hadn’t been an hour late, I [View Full Entry]

At Finca Fleichman, they keep a certain number of bottles from each batch they make. Some date back to so long ago that they're long since undrinkable.
The first night in Mendoza, we went to 1884 Francis Mallman for dinner, located in the Bodega Escorihuela. The place was stunning - old architecture and what must have been 30 foot ceilings. The bar was so inviting that we decided to stop there for some champagne even though our table was ready. Surprisingly enough, we sat next to a man from Kentucky, so it was nice to hear a familiar southern accent after hardly hearing any English for 2 weeks. After that we moved into the dining room, complete with old marble floors and high-backed chairs… the place definitelygot an [View Full Entry]

Our first day in Mendoza: After the all night bus trip, we finally arrived in Mendoza around 7:30 this morning. Excited to be here, we were greeted by nice weather and we made our way to our hotel, The NH Cordillera. We couldn’t check in because it was so early so we took to the streets and started exploring. We walked around for a while, grabbed some breakfast and just enjoyed the tree lined streets. Downtown Mendoza feels a lot like Palermo Viejo in BA -sycamore trees line every street along the way. After coming back to the hotel to check [View Full Entry]

Last night in Bariloche / Bus ride to Mendoza After another great evening of hanging out in our Lobby drinking our new favorite wine, Torrentes, and writing our blog, we headed out to what else - the best steakhouse in Bariloche! El Boliche de Alberto was absolutely packed. It was the first place we’d had to wait for a table in Argentina, and we got there around 10:30. We took this as a good sign that the place was decent. Having learned our lesson from La Cabrera in Buenos Aires, we knew not to each order our own steak. Instead we [View Full Entry]

Vote for Lucio Parra!

We arrived in Bariloche on Saturday afternoon, after a very delayed flight. Immediately upon stepping off the plane, we were floored by the beauty of the place. The Andes mountains are breathtaking, and still have lots of snow left on them, as they’re so high. Apparently they had a rough winter down here with loads of snow. Since the seasons are reversed down here, it is the equivalent of early May, so usually there would be less snow, but not so this year. It was a big change for us to go from the rainforest to the cooler weather of Patagonia [View Full Entry]

Falls at night - spectacular.
Falls at night - spectacular.
The highlight of the trip - we were so lucky to have planned our trip to Iguazu during a full moon. And that it was actually clear that night was another huge bonus, since it rains A LOT here.
Here are our pictures from the Falls. Completely mesmorizing, and so much bigger than we thought. Poor Niagra. To pick up from my last entry in Iguazu - we did go bird watching! It is actually much more fun than it sounds. We were after the Toucan, which is a very "shy bird", according to the park rangers. So, with camera in hand we braved the mosquito-laden rain forest Macuco Trail for a 5 mile hike to see if we could track the Toucan. Lo and behold, we encountered the elusive Tuc. Not once, but twice! In fact, we even have [View Full Entry]

The Falls in all their glory
The Falls in all their glory pt. 2
Me and the Falls

Right now we're in Iguazu, and are mooching off of the internet at the Sheraton - so no pictures yet unfortunately. The falls were more amazing than we had even imagined - they go on and on, and the volume of water going over them is mind-boggling. We took a raft trip today that went up into the mouth of the falls which was awesome. The whole area around the falls is a rain forest, and they've built catwalks all through it so you can view the falls from tons of different places in the National Park. Iguazu is definitely out [View Full Entry]

We made it south to Patagonia (staying outside of Bariloche in the lake district). We're finally in a place that has a good, consistent internet connection where we can use our laptop. We're behind on photos, so here are the greatest hits. We'll update the entries in the next day or so. [View Full Entry]
