Blog on Santa Cruz - our Galapagos extension. The extension was easy enough... Think they are glad to have people stay on....extra revenue and all, at Galapagos prices!!! We only had to pay $10 to change that was all and it would have been free but we changed our destination to Guayaquil instead of Quito. So the six of us (Lisa, Andeas, Hanita and Archna) headed back into town (bus-boat- bus... About an hour and a bargain at only about $3) and began our search for a hostel.... After looking at almost all of them, including 'The Red Footed Booby', which at $80 per night there was no way in the world we could ever afford, but we tried our luck for a deal nevertheless, we plumped on 2 triples at 'Hotel Gardner', which had a ... read more

Day 1 of our Galapagos Cruise..... Bit of a con really... Instruction was to arrive at the hotel for a briefing at 6pm.... Which we were well in time for ... Only problem.... It started at 5pm.... So only the people who had been staying there and received their revised briefing packs early were at the briefing.... Our briefing was therefore a short heads up, we were showed to our room and that was our first impression of what we'd paid a fortune for .... Not exactly the best value for money day!!!! This was followed by the worst nights sleep we've had since the guy with the runs kept us up back in Ushuaia ..... This hotel (Hotel Sanfransisco ) is obviously used by a lot of companies with big groups and this big group ... read more

So after two months in glorious Central America, which was so fantastic we actually really struggle to pinpoint the highlight, we're back in South America.... How did our time back here start..... With a tannoy announcement from the captain declaring we were unable to land due to the heavy rain causing the runway to be too wet...... We persisted to circle for a further 45 mins and then to say the landing was hair raising would be a pretty big understatement...... So very very late we disembarked the plane.... Think we were due to land at around 1.30pm and it was about 3pm..... It was black outside from all the rain and when we felt the air temp, we honestly thought we'd landed back in the UK.... With only a few dollars to our name, the ... read more

Our last stop on our Central American adventure and that involved a last pit stop in Guatemala.... The lovely Antigua.... Certainly a no brainier alternative to Guatamala City. We arrived after a long 9 hour journey, which stated with the 40 minute rough road back from Semuc Champey and continued with the twists and turns through the mountains.... Not great when you'd had a bit too much rum the night before..... It was about 4pm when we arrived in Antigua and got dropped off in the main square and had a short walk to our hostel..... La Tereza ...., which had some little luxuries like hot water, filtered water, free brekkie, which wasn't your average bread and jam... Pancakes, omelette, scrambled eggs.... Once again Guatemala was spoiling us....This place is really really pretty. Much bigger th ... read more

We found the caves between Tikal and Guatamala City!So as I said in my previous blog we found a great guy called Jimmy in Flores who advised us on a much more interesting passage through his country so we could see some more best bits... This started with a mammoth 10 hour journey through what I can only describe as the most beautiful lush scenery we've seen. It's a bit like a grand prix circuit with hills mind, and has rally drivers to match, so we were all very glad when we arrived at Coban for what we thought was a short transfer to our hostel..... Oh no! Two hours more on what can only be described as dirt tracks for the main, and ... read more

Flores

Published: April 25th 2012Central America Caribbean » Guatemala » Petén Region » Flores

Stress free boarder crossing again due to our early morning start and the fact that it was just as cheap to take the taxi instead of the bus, so we did just that and had door to door service at the time we wanted to go to the border of Belize and Guatemala. By 8.15am we'd filled out our tourist questionnaire and paid our exit tax and were in a shuttle bus waiting to travel the 140kms to Flores... ( think we got a bit ripped off but after Belize this place is so cheap you kind of don't mind....) Rather than the chicken buses we have become accustomed to we got to ride in a people carrier that was brand new, only us in it and it reminded me ... read more

Just spent a great couple of days in San Ignacio on our way through to Guatemala. It's a mountain town with a river running through it, which is shallow enough to wade across but with some deep parts to swing and drop into. We spent a hour or so just chilling out down there watching the world go by and people taking a dip to cool off fully clothed, it's that hot you'd dry off in about 10 mins! There is loads to do here like the ATM Caves, Caracol Mayan Ruins, Jungle Stuff, Zip Lining, Bartons Caves, loads of Waterfalls, Day trips to Guatemala for Flores and Tikal, horse riding, river tubing....... The list goes on...on our budget we had to pick wisely so we opted for a bit ... read more

So, as you know we made it to Belize.... Now we just had to get to Sittee River and after a nightmare with trying to get cash we made the choice to head to Hopkins as that was in the must sees of Belize, had a great beach and looked big enough for us to stock up with supplies ready for our week on our Robinson Crusoe island .... We'd been told by the lady at the bus stop that we just got off at the Hopkins Junction and walked either left or right to whichever set of accommodation we fancied, north or south end of the beach..... So the bus dropped us off at the junction at the top of the main road junction, not that of the town..... However we were oblivious to this ... read more

6 countries in 6 Days So onwards and upwards.... After spending far too much time in Panama, mainly due to school, and Costa Rica, with our volunteering we had 6 days to get to Belize to ensure we were there with 1 day to spare to buy all the supplies we needed for Glovers Atoll. So the mad Tica Bus dash began.....6 countries, 6 days.... Here's the highlights.... Sunday 25th depart San Jose Costa Rica 12:30pm After a pretty relaxed journey from our reserve at Pacuare leaving at 10.45am we were on the river by 11am cruising down it the we'd come a week ago.... Rambo the croc was cruising to his usual chill spot on the log in the middle of the river and further down we saw the Spider Monkeys a group of howlers and ... read more

The Turtles Diaries Saturday 17th March Having not received any responses back from Andres via Carlos's email since we confirmed we'd like to start on Saturday at turtle protection, we decided to give him a quick call to let him know we were still setting off on the 8.40am Bus from Punta Uva and if the buses ran kindly to his timings we'd be with him by around midday.... No answer, so we sent a quick email saying the above and were on our way.... The rickety old bus made its way speedily across to Puerto Limon and the weather seemed to be drying up the further north we got which was a bonus.... Arriving at Puerto Limon we tried to buy tickets to Mantila as had been directed in Andres first email only to find ... read more
