After a long 8 hour river trip up the river and Crossing the biggest lake in Cambodia, the Tonle Sap we made it to Siem Reap! The boat trip seemed a nice change from buses to get to our next destination and it certainly was worth the gamble, we floated through wonderful floating villages, fishing communities and got to see first hand the way of life for people living on this river. As it was the dry season the river level was very low, this caused problems for the boat, getting stuck regularly and having to negotiate round the shallow areas how ever the views from the boat made up for this. Siem Reap located in the north of Cambodia is the gateway to Angkor, it is fully kitted out for backpackers and tourist a like, ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Battambang March 14th 2015

After crossing the border into Cambodia, we made our way to the town of Battambang set in lush country side with hill top temples and hidden caves. The main town has the Sangeer river which runs through it, essential to the locals and people living in this area. Our accommodation here cost 9 dollars a night (flashpackers) and was a huge high rise hotel looking out onto the city. Complete with a double bed, proper shower cubicle and bathroom and a balcony. Not bad considering the price we paid. Our first night consisted of sampling the local food (Khmer) and having an explore before hitting the hey. For our first day in Battambang we organised a day tour with a tuc tuc driver named Titi, we thought this was best considering our push for time and ... read more

After an enjoyable first night in Chanthaburi, we woke up to hot sunny day. The guide book doesn't rate here as a top backpacker destination so no tourist spots are listed, never the less we did some research and found that there was a National park situated just outside of the town centre. We packed our ruck sack, and took a taxi to the park. The taxi's in Asia are fairly unconventional and it was more of a pick up truck we sat in the back of but it made for great viewing of the surrounding landscape on the way. As we approached the park you could start to see its beauty, an area with mountains and tree covered hills looked stunning in the sunshine. We arrived and paid the admission, as it was a Saturday ... read more

Today we woke up knowing we had to find and catch a mini bus too Chanthaburi, this again caused a few minor hiccups in particular being dropped off at the wrong bus station for the bus we needed to catch. This forced us to wander down the road in search of the bus stop where our transport would be leaving from, not fun with a backpack over you and its 30 odd degrees. After some searching and a few games of charades with the locals we found our bus. Which, wasn’t really a bus more of a van. We had to wait for about 2 hours for departure so sat it a nearby air conditioned McDonald ‘s. Departure time came, this bus had a full load of Thai and maybe Cambodian nationals looking to reach the ... read more

After a nice rested night in China Town sampling some delicious street food and a couple of beers , Ollie and I moved on from Bangkok and took the bus to Pattaya. The journey from the centre of Bangkok to the coast took us about 3 hours, thankfully we had air conditioning. Now to our surprise this fairly long bus ride cost around 119bht working out around £2.38, bargain! The sights from the bus window were a mix of, industry, housing and clearly a developing landscape. Once arriving around 3pm we needed a place to stay, as with most places we will be visiting it was a case of looking and seeing what we could fine. As I needed a wee badly the first decent enough accommodation seen was the choice for our first night (a ... read more

After a 16 hour journey from Birmingham - Bangkok, Oliver and I arrived safe and sound 19.15 local time. The first night we spent on Bangkok 's famous Khaosan Road, full of bars, Street Venders and bustling vibe. The first meal we enjoyed is a famous Thai favourite, Pad Thai purchased from a street vender filling, tasty and cheap. We enjoyed a few beers and had a walk around the busy street before hitting the hey for a well needed sleep. Today we moved on from Khaoan Road further south towards the China Town District. Being very close to the Chao Phraya River it seemed acceptable to take the boat, a board a long boat crowded with, locals and tourists having a big pack proved to be a nuisance. Once stoop in a suitable place the ... read more
