We drove this morning from the Charlotte area across the northwest corner of South Carolina to Hartwell, Georgia.. Watsadler Campground is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers on Hartwell Lake. This is a man-made lake bordering Georgia & South Carolina on the Savannah, Tugaloo, & Seneca Rivers. Our campsite was nestled in a pine forest on the lake. We strolled through downtown Hartwell; lots of gift shops, furniture stores, and restaurants. One shop had a custom made kitchen island on rollers we really liked. It was fun window shopping!... read more

Our dear friends, Tim and Rebecca Shivers, allowed us to moochdock in their driveway for several weeks while we visited family back in Ohio. During our stay, Mike installed an electrical transfer switch to allow their home appliances and lights to run during power outages by switching over to a gasoline powered generator. We also spent a weekend down in Charleston, SC with them, in a beautiful Airbnb house located on a lake. Mike's nephew, Harrison Carter, was stationed there and paid us a visit. We enjoyed the Mummenschanz performance at the Gaillard Center and enjoyed a few hands of Canasta during the weekend.... read more

The Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages was a well-kept campground where we enjoyed playing putt-putt near midnight. After a workout at Planet Fitness, we toured the US Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum located next to the Veterans Park. The AASOM offered a chronological tour of exhibits highlighting military operations over the decades from WWII to Afghanistan. The next day we visited the Averasboro Battlefield Museum and Chicora. Again, the south still views the civil war a little different than the north. Back in Fayettville, we rode the Cape Fear River Bike Trail along rolling hills and a river crossing.... read more

The Cashie (pronounced ca-shy-a) River Treehouses and Campground was a spartan but interesting site. A boardwalk along the river provided access to several cabins on stilts with trees growing through the cabins. We made a road trip from here to the Outer Banks. Nags Head was a colorful tourist trap. We parked the Jeep and walked a short distance to the ocean. The Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devils Hill was a highlight of our southern journey. Standing right where powered flight was launched makes the hairs on your arms stand up. Truly inspirational! The members of Cashie Baptist Church (est. 1770) warmly welcomed us Sunday morning. The next day we visited the Hope Plantation and got a private tour by Sam. On the way back we had to stop at Bertie County Peanuts where ... read more

The drive from Lynchburg to Falls Lake State Recreation Area, Holly Point Campground, provided beautiful fall foliage. We dialed it back and rested for a couple days, shopped and did laundry. The State Farmer’s Market provided some tasty vegetables and apples. We did a car tour of Duke University and rode the rigorous golf course bike trail and some of the meandering American Tobacco bike trail. In a visit to Wake Forest, we toured the city Historical Museum, drove by the original Duke University campus (now a Baptist seminary) and visited Brad, Andrea and their kids.... read more

Dixie Caverns Campground was the closest we could stay to Lynchburg. The grounds were pretty sketchy, but the office gift shop/antique store was fun. After a workout at Planet Fitness, we drove to the Peaks of Otter and climbed Sharp Top Mountain. If you like climbing a ladder for a couple of hours straight, you would enjoy this hike. That same day we visited old haunts in Lynchburg including our first apartment and first house. We enjoyed catching up with David Smith that night at La Villa Italian restaurant. David was in our college and career group at Timberlake Baptist.... read more

A drive northeast on Route I-81 took us next to Sugar Hollow Campground, a gorgeous heavily wooded leaf-covered city park facility. Bristol sits on the border between Virginia and Tennessee. We enjoyed the Birthplace of Country Music Museum and learned how emerging music recording technology brought mountain music to the masses. We learned that June Carter’s (Cash) parents were famous country music singers. The museum’s karaoke sound booth allowed you to make a (thankfully) temporary recording of country music songs. The next day we hiked the campground’s Ben’s and Cliff’s trails down to the picnic area and back.... read more

Our shortest travel day was just down the road to Volunteer Park where we met a nice couple, Jamie and Gary, relocating from California. We drove to Cade’s Cove and hiked first at Abram’s Falls Trail before driving the Circle Tour. One unexpected highlight was a visit by a bear cub crossing the road! A visit to the Union County Opry in Maynardville that night, featuring Confederated Railroad, convinced us that the south will rise again. We visited the American Museum of Science and Industry in Oak Ridge and learned about the national impact of nuclear energy. On Sunday we attended a local megachurch, Grace Baptist, and then headed to downtown Knoxville to experience the observation deck of the Sun Sphere (from the 1982 World’s Fair).... read more

Racoon Valley, Escapees, provided full hookups for our stay outside of Knoxville. We visited Scheryl and John’s scenic retirement home on the Powell River which feeds Norris Lake. We were treated to a relaxing 2-hour pontoon boat ride. Mike enjoyed a prime rib birthday dinner at the local Chop House. In Knoxville the next day, we rode our Lectric bikes along the beautiful Tennessee River and through the University the day before the Tennessee-Alabama football game.... read more
