Dont Cry For Me Argentina........ Here I am sitting on the porch of Casa Hernandez in Salta, Argentina....home of the very welcoming Alex and Reijkje.......the sun is shining and all is well with the world....... Back to yesterday.......left San Pedro in the morning at 9.15am and cleared Chilean exit customs ( which is located just outside San Pedro ) and headed towards the border.....which was still another 200kms!!!!.The Girls ( Magdalena and Mellissa ) and I were in this massive 4x4 Pick up truck, with Cristian as our driver, who took us through this awesome desert scenery with total nothingness except salt flats and mountain ranges on either side ....this was the Atacama at its best!!!!We then went through the Tropic of Capricorn ( see images ). We passed sundry wrecked cars which had rolled, and ... read more

Buonasera, a quick update on what has been the most disappointing day so far.......... Have had to change my travel plans and leave here tomorrow, instead of tuesday........bummer.... the next bus was friday and that would have missed out Salta and also made me late for my flight to Tierra del Fuego......so managed to find a driver with a car who will take me to Argentina, along with two girls, one Polish blonde called Magdalena, and an English girl.......the price $100 each instead of $50 with the bus......at least it only takes me 8 hours instead of 12 and I get to tell him to stop so I can make some images, but I cant stay here till Tues...........and its taken me half a day to sort out......never mind, I didnt expect everything to work out ... read more

Saluti........... Sunday morning and am in San Pedro de Atacama.......where else on a Sunday morning late in November!!!!! This place is incredible............firstly its 9.50am and temp in 90s.....but its a very dry heat.....I asked when the last time it rained and the hotel owner said four years ago!!!!!!!!! Back to yesterday .....I set off with the hire car to visit the ghost towns of Iquique early in the morning.....these are former saltpetre towns which made the economy prosper from the 20s till the 60's when they were abandoned because they were uneconomic as atrificial fertilizers took over. It took longer than I thought because I had to go across unmade roads in the middle of the desert, and at one time thought I had missed the towns and was lost.....but my trusty compasss came to the ... read more

Well well well what a day!!!! All started well at 5.30am when i got ready to leave Arequipa....Enrico drove me to the bus station to take my Cruz del Sur bus to Tacna.... The departure lounge was like a swish airline lounge.....apparently I was on the best bus line in Peru. Of we went and soon we were in this incredible desert landscape....the northern Atacama ( see images ) absolutely amazing. There were also two movies during the trip both excellent although in spanish....the first was with Morgan freeman and Jack Nicholson about life before death.....and the second was a terrorist thriller called Eagle Eye. The bus was scheduled to arrive in Tacna Peru at 12.30 but half way into the trip we were stopped had to all dissembark whilst all siutcases were searched..what a total ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon November 19th 2009

Buonasera to all, Its a warm balmy evening in Arequipa, and am sitting outside at 8pm writing this blog. Another interesting 2 days spent in one of the remoter areas of the planet......I set off from Arequipa at 7am yesterday morning and with various stops it took us 5 hours to reach the canyon. We went past the highest point so far for me at 4850mts......you really do feel it. I arrived in Chivay which was just a small border outpost and none too exciting. Fortunately I stayed in the village of Coporaque which was much nicer and had a very pleasant hotel but not much else. I tuned down the offer of a hike into the hills and a visit to the hot springs.....there are volcanos all around us....and instead had a late afternoon nap ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island November 17th 2009

Buonasera, Well am back on line after being incommunicando for the last few days...... Its 10pm and am in The Posada Nueva Espana in Arequipa, after a six hour bus journey from Lake Titicaca sitting next to an old woman who had brought along with her what seemed to be all her worldly possessions, but that wasnt the problem, if I could convey smellovision to you.......unbelievable!!!! Ok back to yesterday morning, I was picked up at 7.30 then taken to the edge of the lake to get my boat to the Uros floating Islands. Am at an altitude of 3800mt so am feeling it a bit. These Islands are amazing in as much as they have been made by the inhabitants from the reeds that grow in the lake. They have to be anchored down to ... read more

Another long and enjoyable day......... Im in my comfortable room in the Casa Andina Puno sending you my last blog for a few days. I was up at 5am this morning and bade my sad farewell to Cuzco in the cold and damp rain I have really enjoyed the hopitality of this town. The bus that I was on was the very plush Inka Express. It was to be a 10 hour journey so I wasnt really looking forward to it, but we stopped in 5 different locations which broke the journey up nicely. I would recommend this company to anyone wishing to do a similar trip. There was a plentiful supply of coffee, tea or coca tea ( which I am getting a real taste for......unfortunately its illegal anywhere else on the planet, except Bolivia I think ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley » Huchuy Cusco November 14th 2009

Buonasera, Am back in Cuzco, on a warm Saturday night, after a full day exploring in the Sacred Valley. I visited many towns and villages including Urubamba, Coya and Pisac. Having a driver whom I could ask to stop whenever I wanted was a real bonus. The whole valley is spectacular and the people very welcoming.....I hope this comes through in the images. I was fortunate to be in Pisac when they were having a childrens race event. Just today I shot more than 500 images...... Im keeping this short tonight and let the images speak for themselves. In the morning Im up at 5.30 for the 10 hour bus trip to Puno and lake Titicaca......which is at a higher altitude than Cuzco......tonight I saw the Hotel having to administer oxygen to a guest!!!!!!!!!....... South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu November 13th 2009

What a day........what a day..... Last night I was looking forward with anticipation and foreboding to today. So with the sound of thunder I prepared my wet weather gear, and my trusty North Face boots, and then on what photo gear to take. I booked an early morning call for 3.30am, which I didn't need as I woke at 3am, and the first thing I could hear was the sound of torrential rain outside.......I was gutted..... Never mind the show must go on......I took one camera and one lens, a bottle of mineral water, and a snickers bar. There were five of us on this trek all looking gloomily at each other. We set off rather wearily but soon got into the stride and to my amazement after one hour I was really enjoying it, and ... read more
