We visited METZ, because Bill’s great grandfather came from Metz. Apart from the B&B with no WiFi, it was a good visit. The cathedral was closed Sunday until 2 pm...so we found a place to eat and waited and WOW! What a treat...glad that we waited... Most cathedrals do canned music, but here we heard a REAL organ being played...it was peaceful and beautiful...This cathedral has more stained glass than any in the world and it took about 300 years to complete...and somehow, it wasn’t damaged by the wars... So, that was worth it all... As some of you know from FB, I am always collecting photos of manhole covers and whatever else someone sticks in the ground. Here we did find several covers with Metz, but also a couple of cute little dragons...Apparently, pre-Christian, a ... read more

Oh, my, we managed to stay in a B&B in Metz without an Internet connection...Yikes! How does that happen any more? And trying to send a real message on my phone is a nuisance...PLUS, it turns out that many people do NOT bother to look at their email...but they don’t give us cell phone numbers so that we can text... We stayed with a lovely couple just outside of Brugge...in a house a bit newer than ours (1882), but a lot more primitive...However, the outdoor toilet has been updated with a REAL FLUSH one...The one bedroom is on the first floor (and the other SERVAS couple, from Seattle got it because they arrived first), but the upstairs is equipped with about 10 beds (single & double)...as in a DORM...our host/hostess slept at one end, and we ... read more

Today, I ran...on the London/Paris bike path...well, you know, my shuffle run....it was just the right temperature and the 70% chance of rain held off until it POURED at exactly 10 am... Saw some really really gorgeous gardens along the bike path, still with some great looking veggies... We needed to update our cell phone coverage, so drove into the town...Bill executed a PERFECT park job, figured out how to pay for the parking space with his credit card (which we use ALL the time!) Found the telephone place and there was a “wonderfully proficient in English” person who explained everything perfectly...Then, it POURED...and we got soaked, because we really don’t want to buy yet another umbrella when we have so many back home! Want to mention the app Vivino... which we use back home to ... read more

Bill and I agreed that we always thought of D-Day, 6th of June as being a defining and definite date (which it was, but)...but we learned at this stunning and well presented museum that it was only the beginning of the invasion that went on for another six months or so. We saw the maps and photos of the invasion of Normandy, a key episode in the liberation of Europe. Such casualties. We could only do this part in one afternoon. The tickets are good for 24 hours. The photos of the destruction. I won’t list them. (But, they made me think about poor Syria...we visited Damascus and Aleppo about 20 years ago, and now whenever we see what has happened there...I feel so sad...Is there any way that it will be able to recover?) The ... read more

We have been so busy finding interesting SERVAS families, and that we have done, that, in the process, we managed to miss both the Bayeaux tapestry and the Giverny Gardens, both on my list, but I wasn’t paying attention, and we are NOT back-tracking now. Just have to plan for another visit. Bill is the designated driver, and he has reached far back into driving memory to drive stick shift (six gears)...after all these years of automatic...There are very few stop lights here, mostly traffic roundabouts, and depending on the traffic, some shifting of gears. As I think I mentioned earlier, GPS is very polite, saying, “please take the second (or fourth) exit from the roundabout...” But with several lanes and heavy traffic, it can be harrowing...Initially, I counted the exits, but now I sit as ... read more

Agnes didn’t have to teach on Tuesday, for some reason, she only teaches four days a week, so she got us out the door on time. We headed to Vannes, and along the way, we saw signs for Carnac...and realized that we had time to stop...Who knew that the Arthurian legends involve this part of France as well. Thousands of stones in rows (stone alignments), dolmens (stone tombs) and tumuli (burial mounds)...apparently chipped and carved and placed in rows in one of the largest such collections in the world...date from 3300 BCE and possibly from 4500 BCE (according to Wikipedia)...One of the more charming modern myths is a version that Merlin turned a Roman legion into stone. We were smart enough to have lunch BEFORE everything closed about 1 pm...and then eventually, headed to our next ... read more

OMG! What a hassle!!! What a learning curve to be on the road again, for three months, with a car! And learning to use this site! RENTAL CAR: Thank goodness, Bill knows how to drive a stick shift...so do I, but he is the only authorized driver. We managed to circle the airport only twice before we understood the wonderfully, courteous voice on the GPS which says, Please turn right, Please turn left...Somehow, we didn’t understand the A/C...whether on or off, it spewed HOT AIR...eventually we contacted SIXT (rental company) and the problem seems to have been operator error. Organization: historically, we try to pack minimally. However, this trip is three months and we anticipate some cold weather, meaning we packed more than normal, but still within our two bags plus one. But, we were not ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris September 8th 2019

Our trip has come together. First, we discovered that we had enough points through our credit card company to pay for the airline tickets AND a car rental. Then, we found Larry through trustedhousesitters.com...he arrived yesterday, and so far, he and the dogs like each other. Bill has magnificently gotten household things organized...and our laptop loaded so that either of us can continue to work, as needed!! I've got thread and fabric to stitch if the scenery gets boring!! (as if...) We have written letters to our first two hosts: in Paris we will be with friends with whom we have stayed before, and they with us. We are still awaiting a reply from a SERVAS host in Rennes...whom we chose because of this description: "old typical house (mud built)." After all of our houses, we ... read more

Haven't quite figured out how to add photos, but I am getting better. Biking in France is so much easier than what I have seen in the US of A... Here are two photos of the green biking signs that we followed. These are found not only along the canals, but also in cities, including Paris! All the cities, and the villages have clearly marked bike lanes, and motorists are really considerate. They wait patiently to pass, and when they do pass, they really zip by! We did buy the France maps for our GPS, but it wasn't all that useful for biking. BTW, I do like kilometers because when we say that we biked 88 km, it seems like so much more than saying 55 miles.... read more

We have not often been SERVAS travelers (www.servas.org) in our other travels. Yes, we did visit a few families in Australia and New Zealand, and we did visit one SERVAS traveler in Guatemala, but this is the first time that we consistently stayed in homes. What a difference this makes to our view and understanding of French life!! Just imagine the difference between visiting us in the Catskills or my daughter in Forest Hills (Queens) versus staying in a hotel near Times Square! Contrast the difference between our home cooking and conversations with sitting quietly being served in a restaurant. We stayed in B&Bs only if SERVAS wasn't available. Those nights, we biked in, took a shower, headed for town, ordered pizza, and biked back to sleep, eat breakfast and back on the road. When we ... read more
