The next morning we were treated to a wonderful breakfast. Lots of food choices. I had crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, and chicken sausage. I had water and apple juice to drink. I did notice that they don’t serve milk as a beverage just like in England. We headed out for our first location, the Gassan Diamonds Factory. The Amsterdam diamond company, Gassan Diamonds, is located in the former steam-driven diamond polishing factory. In this monumental building, we saw the diamond cutters at work while our guide explained the diamond cutting and polishing process. Gassan Diamonds has over 425 years of craftsmanship and tradition. It is famous for the ‘Amsterdam Cut’ diamond and also, Gassan's inhouse cut diamond; the Gassan 121, which has 121 facets. During our visit to Gassan Diamonds, we had the opportunity to purchase ... read more

We made it to our hotel on the outskirts of Amsterdam about 4:45. We are heading out to do a canal cruise and dinner. We arrived in Amsterdam about 4:30. We are staying on the outskirts of Amsterdam at the Mercure Hotel. My room is on the 15thfloor. The hotel lobby and dining areas are very modern. Amsterdam has a population of 851,373 within the city proper, 1,351,587 in the urban area, and 2,410,960 in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses... read more

After landing in Calais we headed north through Belgium towards Antwerp. The Port of Calais was the first cable ship port in Europe and is the fourth largest port in France and the largest for passenger traffic. The highway system I similar to America’s. There were 3 lane and 2 lane roads. Large modern windmills dotted the land. Lots of farm land of wheat or corn along with cows and sheep. The houses I noticed had a triangular upper story. Just before Antwerp we had to make a huge detour from our normal route due to a huge accident on the main highway. It would have been an hour sitting in traffic, so the driver decided to take another route that would take us through the suburbs of Sint-Niklass, Nieuwkerken-Waas, and Vrasene before getting back onto ... read more

The day began with a wake up call at 3:30 a.m. I got to the lobby for a cold buffet of cereal, cold cuts, sliced cheese, and various breads. We loaded up the bus at 4:45 a.m. We are a group of 28 people! I think I am the only person traveling alone. Everyone else is either married or with family. Quite a few people from America. YEAH! Lots of room to move around and plenty of space for my carry on! Our tour guide is Scott. Nice young man. Our driver is Luigi from Italy. We traveled south to Dover and to take the ferry over to Calais, France. We had to get off the bus before getting on the ferry so the French official can stamp our passports. The ferry ride took only 1 ... read more

Wednesday, my last day in London before leaving for Europe, I decided to go to the Museum of London before spending time getting some laundry done. I also had an early departure time of 4:45 a.m. so I wanted to be back early to my hotel to pack and get some rest. I took the Tube to the Museum of London, It was raining during the 3 blocks I had to walk to get to the Museum. Since I had the London Pass I also got a free Museum Highlights Book. The museum had lots of artifacts from early prehistoric up to modern times. It was very informative. On the outside of the museum was part of the original London Wall that the Romans built when London was known as Londinium. As I was leaving, I ... read more

It was forecast to rain early, so instead of leaving my bags until later, I decided to go to The Cumberland early to see if they could hold my bags. After a 15 minute bus ride, I arrived at the Cumberland which is directly across from Marble Arch. Its in the same area that I stayed in during my last trip overseas. Happily I was able to access my room right then and there! This place is all about security. They had a man stationed at the entrance of the elevator that made you check your card before getting on to the elevator. Then you had to use your card to push up or down to call the elevator. Next, once inside the elevator you had to use the card again before pushing the floor your ... read more

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London. The bridge consists of two bridge towers tied together at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal tensionforces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical components of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bas... read more

I decided to go to Hampton Court Palace since it was a nice sunny day and rain was forecast for the rest of my stay. I planned to take the Tube then a bus to get there but electrical problems cancelled the Green line heading out to that area. I was told to get off at Earl's Court Station and take the C1 to Victoria Station. I was one of the lucky passengers to get on the bus. The bus driver passed several stops since we were so full. People at those bus stops were very upset. When I got to Victoria Station an hour later, I found out through an Underground Information person that they reopened all the lines to Richmond! Ugh! So back on the Tube. This time I made it to Richmond and ... read more

I awoke early reluctantly so I could be at the train on time. Found out that the ticket I booked was good for all day so I got on the first train out of Liverpool. There was no change of trains so we made it to London in 2 1/2 hours. I got to Euston Station and took the Tube to Paddington Station. No I didn't see a bear anywhere. From there I took a cab to the Elysee Hotel. Check in wasn't until 2 so after leaving the suitcase with the hotel, I walked to Argos. Argos is a department store that uses computers tablets for people to place orders. If they have it in stock at that location, the clerks go in the back warehouse section and bring it to you at the check ... read more

I was finally able to sleep in for once. I went down to see what the breakfast was going to be that the hotel was offering. For about £8 you had a choice of undercooked bacon, hash brown triangles, baked beans, toast, bagels, large pork sausage, somewhat runny scrambled eggs, and various cereals. Juice, tea, or coffee were the beverages. Typical English breakfast. So, I decided to walk up the street for about 5 minutes and grab a bite to eat at McDonalds. Yes, again! I have eaten more at McDonald's in the past 3 days than I have in America for the past 2 years! I grabbed a biscuit sandwich and a melon fruit bag (McDonalds offer various bags of fruit). I headed back to the hotel to catch up on some blogging. The Magical ... read more
