3 - 17 September 2011 The much anticipated arrival of Nanna and Pa is finally upon us! Always so good to see the parents, especially when it's in a different part of the country every time we see them these days! They stayed in the same caravan park as us at Coogee and the six of us took a trip down to Margaret River for four nights somewhere in the middle of their stay. We did the tourist thing around Perth and Fremantle - the Historic Fremantle Prison, Kings Park and the Botannical Gardens, Burns Beach and Hilary's Boat Harbour, Freo Markets and Fishing Boat Harbour.... The best part, however, was just relaxing in the evenings with the wine, cheese, chocolate and other goodies we came across sitting around the table playing Bastard Bridge and catching ... read more

24 June - 2 September 2011 It's been a long time between drinks (in writers' terms) and I have just had a brief look over the last few entries and couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness at what is now history. We have seen and done so many amazing things and I am well aware that the enormity of what we are doing on this trip may well not hit home until we actually arrive home, so to speak. We have heard ourselves say many a time "this is what it's all about" as we take in the stunning scenery, beautiful wildlife and lap up the appreciation of being on the road, away from the daily grind and together as a family just 'being'. But looking back over some of the photos and entries ... read more

23 June 2011 Nearly eight months on the road and we have just clicked over 27,000kms! After sadly leaving Esperance, we accidently found ourselves at Wave Rock. We'd had a long day of driving and decided to stop at the next camp we stumbled across. Well, that idea didn't last long when we found a weird campground - think Wolf Creek kind of weird - so on we pushed and ended up at Hyden, home to the famous Wave Rock. We stayed only a night as it wasn't a cheap place to bunk down but made the most of the following morning by doing the walk to Hippo's Yawn and Wave Rock. After the many times of seeing Wave Rock in magazines and books, nothing really compares to seeing it in real life and to contemplate ... read more

16 - 22 June 2011 Arriving in Esperance almost felt like we had arrived home. We felt so happy and comfortable there that we just wanted to stay. So we did try to find some work but unfortunately to no avail. The caravan park we stayed at was directly opposite the beach so we had a great view from our camp. Esperance has so much to offer - the most amazing coastline with the Archipelago of the Recherche (over 100 islands popping up out of the Southern Ocean all around Esperance Bay), beautiful national parks, good fishing spots, perfect surf breaks, the list goes on..... We spent a day at Cape Le Grand National Park which is home to one of Australia's whitest beaches, Lucky Bay. Unfortunately it was too cold to get in the ocean ... read more

13 - 15 June 2011 We couldn't go past the famous surf spot, Cactus Beach, without a stopover. We drove into Cactus not really knowing what to expect as not only was the campground on private property, but we'd also heard old stories of surfers being chased out of the area by other territorial surfers armed with weapons! What we found was a lovely campground nestled amongst the sand dunes with basic but very clean facilities. The beach itself was one of those beaches that you could sit and watch all day. There were several surf breaks offering up perfect little barrels and cliffy headlands which made for some great fishing spots. The old fella that owns and maintains the land in and around the campground wants nothing more than the visitors to respect and look ... read more

6 - 12 June 2011 After a long drive from Yulara we stayed at Marla for a night before hitting the road again in the direction of Coober Pedy. We simply couldn't go to Outback South Australia without a visit to the opal capital of the world. It was an interesting place but not everyone's cup of tea I would imagine.. Driving into Coober Pedy was bizarre as there were mines for as far as the eye could see (some active, some no longer in operation). We visited the Old Timers Mine and did a self-guided tour, complete with hard hats and all! This part of Coober Pedy was the highlight - the tour was so informative and gave us a real life insight into how the miners lived back in the day. We could see ... read more

31 May - 5 June 2011 You can't go to the Red Centre without doing the three major tourist attractions and they certainly didn't disappoint! We stayed 3 nights at Kings Canyon which allowed us to do the short walk into the base of the canyon and also the walk to Kathleen Springs one day and then the 6km walk around the perimeter of the canyon the following day. The drive to Kings Canyon was an interesting one as we thought we were heading into a huge dust storm but later realised it was backburning on a very large scale. We couldn't turn around because of distances, etc so we were feeling a little anxious for a short time. We have noticed since being in the N.T. that the backburning takes place on a large scale ... read more

26 - 30 May 2011 Speechless! What can I say... This part of the trip has been right up there as one of the major highlights. The extraordinary beauty of the West McaDonnell Ranges kept us in awe each day we were there. We were lucky enough to camp at the Ridgetop Campground at Redbank Gorge - the view was breathtaking to say the least. I guess the mice also liked the view! I had one small but bold furry fellow make it all the way onto my lap one night whilst I was trying to eat dinner.. Once based at Redbank we were able to backtrack and see all the wondrous sites of the "West Macs". Standley Chasm, a natural "slice" through the quartzite rock, which stands very tall and very narrow was amazing. Then ... read more

19 - 25 May 2011 After a night at Stuarts Well (roadhouse on the Stuart Hwy) we were off to Alice. Stuarts Well wasn't without it's moments though.... The mice took a liking to my toes whilst I was cooking dinner and must have mistaken them for a nice piece of cheese. Hmmmm.. Once in Alice we really didn't do much at all for a few days. We took pleasure in the basic things we hadn't had for a while - running water (and drinkable!), power, flushing toilets, showers, laundry, etc etc. Not to mention reasonably priced supermarkets and fuel and all the outlets we needed by that stage to give the car and camper some maintenance from the past few weeks on the road. We did see some of the sights - Jessie and Emily ... read more

14 - 18 May 2011 OODNADATTA TRACK!!! We came, we saw, we conquered! Well, it wasn't really that hardcore... The start (or end for those travelling south) of the Oodnadatta Track is a little town called Marree. It is of great significance in the history of the camel men and it was a bit of a shake up to us in terms of distances between towns and lack of available water.. We stayed only a night and accidently met a lovely woman working at the health centre who let us bring car & camper around into the backyard of the hospital and fill up our tanks with drinking water. She saved us a lot of time and money so it was a very lucky (and unusual) trail of circumstances that brought us to her. We met ... read more
