Little warning: This blog was supposed to have four short videos attached. All the family is currently in Fiji and internet is really slow here, which means I have trouble attaching those fun movies. If you want to see them, do come back here early January. Last week, the kids were enjoying the last few days at school before the long Christmas holidays, and Mari has been so kind to let me go scout a diving place ahead of the family. I didn't sleep on terra ferma in Australia, but spent 4 nights on the SpoilSport yacht with a bunch of divers. Great Barrier Reef, the name say it all, magic, beautiful, we all dream about the place. Australia is country number 34 for me in terms of diving...and the first question any diver is asking ... read more

I've now been living 15 years in Asia and I never made it to Pattaya. I have always call the place the "s**t hole" of Asia, and after the week-end we just spent here, I can confirm that the name make sense! So why going to Pattaya, why going now? Well, the kids are in Vietnam for a long week-end due to the King's birthday holiday in Thailand. So they are enjoying a little bit of tourism on their own. I'm also short of few stays to keep my nice level as a frequent guest with the SPG group (You know, the one which giving me all this lovely little room upgrades). Pattaya does have a new Sheraton, and the hotel has a pretty nice reputation. We took the bus from Ekamai station in Bangkok on ... read more

The children were supposed to have a long week-end holidays but since they had three weeks off from school due to the floodings...this week-end has been cancelled a week ago. Well, I'm the kind of guy who planned ahead, way ahead, and to get a good deal, I have no problem to pre-pay my accomodation. So here is the dilemna...paid hotel nights...no more long week-end...you guess it, on the road we went. Hua Hin will be the place for some holiday makers, but not for all I have to admit. This is one of the reason for my blog title. There is not much in terms of "visiting" here once you came few times. Markets..we have better in Bangkok. Beaches...the beach here is simply ugly, or not even existent anymore. Temples...well, nothing great to my knowledge. ... read more

To visit Cairo properly you would need days, or even few weeks.... The good news, is that with Egypt Air, I can do this on the cheap. This is one little travel trick if you have time ahead of you. If you do have a lay-over of more than 6 hours, Egypt Air will provide you with a free transit visa, with a three stars hotel room, and with all adequate meals...all this, free! All flights coming from Asia arrive early morning...and depart to Asia late evening. Most flights to Africa will also leave late evening and arrive early morning. Meaning for me, I receive two full days to visit Cairo. The "bad news" is that I'm spending two nights in a row in a plane. But as tourism is pretty down in Egypt, out of ... read more

I'm the first to admit, my pictures for these three dives are pretty crap. But hey, I saw at least 50 hammerheads at Protea Banks. I'm back for my third visit to Shelly Beach, 120 km south of Durban...and trust me, this is not my last visit and dive here! To spare you all the details, you can see below my three last postings about the area. This time, I managed one dive at Protea Banks. We had to cancel the second dive as the waves were getting crazing once we left the water, and it would have been way too dangerous on the zodiac. Well, it gave me time to play 9 holes of golf at Selbourne. The next day, I managed two dives at Aliwal Shoal, which is an hour drive north of Shelly ... read more

"Do not fly funny airlines"...I should have know better. But as I was browsing to find a ticket from Joburg to Lubumbashi a little over a month ago, the only fare I could find on South African Express was 1,100usd return...and this is for a 2 hours flight! So I decided to give it a try on Zambezi Airlines through Lusaka. The airline is wellknown for serious delays, but the price was less than half the one of SAX. Well, my flight was scheduled on 2nd of November...and three days before the Zambian government decided to ground the full fleet of Zambezi on "security reasons". Hey, they haven't crashed yet...so was this purely political? So I found myslef with not much choices. SAX prices had climbed to 1,400usd...this is still in economy, small aircraft, not much ... read more

Here is our last entry of a very cool trip to Sri Lanka. And yes, as you guess, it had to involve diving. You come to Sri Lanka to enjoy your time, not for a diving trip. But while you are here, you may still log one or two dives on the way. This is precisely what we did with a single dive at Hikkaduwa Gala. We dived with Poseidon diving. It was the second day of the season, so I wasn't expecting much in term of visibility. We were still lucky with at least 10 meters visibility...in a 30 degres celsius water. The equipement of the dive center was fine, but these guys are simply mad. The "boss" warned me...my divemasters don't speak much english....that's ok, I had a preview of the dive site before....because ... read more

Little upgrade about Bangkok. We are now Monday morning and still dry, I think we are going to stay dry. Thanks a lot for all your messages. It's beach time! Our first stop, the little village of Mirissa. Mirissa is 120km west of Tissa. I couldn't find a transport for a reasonnable price, so we decided to go by three wheelers. We cut the trip with a first stop in the little fishing town of Hambantota. There we found a second three wheelers, a way more roomy one. Cost for 120km, 30usd. The experience is a fun one. The weather was beautiful, and the ride too. We just had to be patient as it took us close to four hours to cover the 120km. This included a stop of few minutes for our second driver to ... read more

First, little news from Bangkok. The higgest tide have passed by, and all of Central Bangkok is still on dry land. CNN and BCC are pretty acurate in their statments, but they forget to say something simple. Millions in Bangkok haven't seen the floods. We have supermarkets full of food, with all fresh products available. What is difficult to find is bottles of water. All the imported bottles of water you want, at a premium price, and no local brands. But beside this, everything is available. Sadly, this is not true for the thousands of km2 around Bangkok, and the millions who live with their feet in water. That water is not always safe! Hope the water will go down fast, but we all know it could take weeks in some places. Back to our next ... read more

I would like to thanks our friends for the tenths of messages we have received concerning the situation in Bangkok. Little update. We are, as of Friday lunch time, fully on dry ground. I checked around town yesterday afternoon....the closest floods are at least 10km away from us on any direction. We have limited supplies of bottled water...something like 15 liters, and no more in any shops. I was able to find 3 more litters yesterday walking by a yoga studio...you can smile! But we have all supplies of soda water, fruit juices, carbonated drinks, milk and even wine! For health reasons, the kids have now a mandatory third brushing teeth at lunch time...with all those sodas! Another smile! There is no issue to find food around our area...maybe not everything, but still a huge choice ... read more
