Sunny Santorini Pictures alone cannot do this place justice....I tried! A few samples below but the memory cards got a hammering once again! We are so lucky to have spent time on this beautiful island in such a wonderful hotel. Cave Houses Oia is run by a lovely family who really look after you, they certainly contributed to our stay. Oia is on the north of the island and does not yet quite have the amount of people as the main town of Fira. In fact there are no bars (they are not allowed to set up here) in Oia therefore you can imagine it gets very peaceful at night and attracts people looking for this peace. We had 3 lovely days here, unfortunately the wind was fiesty on the first 1.5 days though this didn't ... read more

Athens First recomedation I have for anyone coming to Athens is catch the train from the airport...it's easy! Second recomendation I have is be very very careful of the Ouzo. It's a killer! Hotels in Athens are interesting, either seem to be bottom or top of the range though we managed to secure the smallest 'back' room in a very very swish hotel in a fabulous location, drinks in the bar were equivalent to the price of the room! Having said that the bar was a fabulous introduction into Athens with lit up views of the Parthenon and the Temple of Zeus, location, location, location. We spent the next day seeing the required sights and doing some serious people watching in Plaka! And dog watching for that matter, they are everywhere trying to find the best ... read more

Kutna Hora We had seen come pics, Ewen had been there, it was now our turn... After an easy ride of 1 hour upon the Czech railway system we found ourselves in Kutna Hora. A picturesque town west of Praha, known for it's silver mining (circa 1700's) and following briefly by zinc mining (now non existent, as per silver)..Heinekin brought the brewery here and nothing has been the same (according to our driver!)...Communist, Socialist, Capitalist - this place has taken it all and survives...just! One thing now drives, or at least supports this town....BONES! No BOB's here (I am wrong as the pics will show, and we were unaware of St. Barbara's/ Barbaricus (I should pay more attention!) Church - but BONES keeps it afloat! The Kutnice Ossuary, or Church of Bones is a fascinating place, ... read more

Doors of Old Town Prague As was mentioned in the last blog (or the one before that as the 'last blog' is currently uploading!), I was awoken by the chimes of the Astronomical Clock at 6 a.m. Again, there must have been a software glitch or perhaps the server crashed - who knows! Anyway, given the hour and the lack of activity in the square, I decided to get out and take some snaps. I came across a few interesting doors in the back alley ways and that was it...I ventured around the local area, venturing down alleys, lane ways and main streets alike, one door led to another! I was questioned in some back street by a local gentlemen as to what was I doing (presumably photographing his door?) My lack of Czech was obvious, ... read more

Day 2 - Praha This place is full of it - BOB's to the left, BOB's to the right (almost every building is a BOB to me) - some have some historical significance, others just look the part, and why wouldn't they? Coming from Australia to a place like this imparts, for me anyway, history...! (How can it not?) Not that we don't have any, but a remark made to a local today (not us) about a cottage built in 1890 being "pretty old" drew an interesting remark - a small silence, an iffy wave of the hand, then a reference to a building in plain sight built in 1320...There is no way a culture like ours can 'fully' appreciate the history associated, the generations forging a living in and on this land. What has this ... read more

Hello all, This blog is coming from very early on day 3 but we have been way too busy getting out and about in Old Praha to update this... What a beautiful city! The buildings, the streets and the alleys are all very different to what we are used to, which is no surprise, but a welcomed change. We have situated ourselves right in the middle of Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) with the Astronomical Clock right out our window (see pics). It's a little TT (Tommy Tourist) but we thought being in the middle of it certainly has it's advantages. St Nicholas Church is across the square and the Tyn Church towering ominously over the square to the right of us. Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and neo-styles, this place has it all. We spent a fair ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Richmond May 10th 2010

Hi All, Our last day in London and the UK for that matter, we decided to get out of town (but not too far). Julie recalled Richmond being a nice spot, so that's where we headed... Absolutely nothing exciting to report but we had a nice, relaxing meander around town and found a nice spot for lunch on the banks of the Thames. Not a bad spot and if we happened to live in the UK, it wouldn't be a bad base from which to commute - not too far, yet far enough out of town (if you know what I/we mean). It has everything required shops / cafes / restaurants etc etc with a sprinkling of "pompous pom!" but could get over that... Anyway, tomorrow is Prague So very much looking forward to that (to ... read more

London Day 4 We awoke to a brisk, misty morning. The threat of shopping hung thick in the air - the scent was strong... With the weather not conducive to visiting BOB's and the fact we had ticked most off the list, Camden Town and markets seemed a logical choice. The tube, again, beckoned to be ridden and the predictable wait of 1 minute seemed never ending. With a rush of air and 'mind the gap' we were off, speeding into what was surely going to be a purchasing paradise. Upon arrival, the crowds were a throbbing mass, converging as one onto the escalators, surely propelling them, and us into shopping utopia...not to be! Well, it was OK but nothing seen could have been described as unique. A large Queen Vic Market, spread out over ... read more

Day 3 Well, with what seemed to be the last 'fine' day we decided to venture down by the river and check out the sites (BOB's) - London Tower / Tower Bridge / St Pauls etc etc. A hell of a lot of walking and we paid for it by the end of the day...but worth it! The weather turned (or the wind at least) and we found ourselves seeking refuge in a pub A: To escape the wind and B: To rest the feet. With all the walking you have to keep up your fluid intake and we were in a pub! Now, prior to finding our cosy pub, Julie was seeking "refuge" in shops - seeking the warmth was her excuse, yet she departed these establishments with nothing but rosy cheeks so we'll grant ... read more

Howdy All, What a day (and a half!) commentary currently from Brett (sorry!) Well, after dealing with what become an endless, endless ,endless (you get the point) flight/s we have arrived - previous post confirmed! Today/Yesterday Zombie like, we decided to check out our surrounds, as brain functions were lacking (on my behalf - is all I can explain), we headed for Hyde Park in search of squirrels (we found none). That resolved, Oxford St loomed near and within sight... We trecked up the beaten path which is 'Oxford St' and to my surprise - perhaps amazement, Julie only ventured into a 'couple' of shops...and bought, "nothing"! (jetlag has taken it's toll!) For the record I did buy one shirt on Oxford Street, on sale! Most of the shops have their summer gear in now... We ... read more
