So here are the basics, although I expect the majority of my readers will already be aware of them. My name is Allen, and I am a 19 year old, full-time student studying Economics (with minors in both Sociology and Accounting) at Maryville College in Tennessee. I am currently at the University of Ulster-Jordanstown, where I am spending a year as an exchange student with the Irish-American Scholars program. (UU-J is located around 7 miles North of Belfast in the town of Newtownabbey http://www.ulster.ac.uk/ ). This blog will be both of my general life here in UU and whatever other European adventures I can get myself into.

It's now November, and I can't believe how fast time is moving. I've managed to get myself fairly wrapped up in life here at in Northern Ireland, which is why it's taken so long for me to get back to this blog. Of course, since I've not managed to stay on top of blogging, I've experienced the downward cycle of never knowing what I would write about when I got around to it again, as each passing day tends to add more to the “not written about yet” pile. So, my solution is to give up on the chronological attempt at story telling, and simply pick random stories and thoughts to write about, most likely as they pop into my head and not in any semblance of logical order. “Accents” Most people I've talked to ... read more

It's amazing how fast time slips away from me here, so here goes blog round two. Although I would love to spend a good bit of time on sightseeing in Paris, I think I'll have to skip through that rather quickly to get to more current things, like life here at UUJ. I'll start back in France, which was an absolute blast. Our first few days were spent in Paris with some hard-core tourism, with Coralie acting as, friend, guide, and translator all in one. From Monday morning until Tuesday evening, we managed to see highlights of the Louvre, take a boat tour of Paris, visit Montmartre, hit the second floor of the Eiffel tour, walk to the Arc de Triomphe, and visit Notre Dam. We also hit up a perfume store and took a tour ... read more

Here is where the adventure begins, and, as expected, it has been rather eventful so far. The week before I left--especially the last few days-- when I began to realize that all the familiar people and places I kept passing would be an ocean away for nine months was a bit nerve wracking, and between packing, last minute errands, and saying goodbyes I had a pretty hectic week. When Saturday the 8th arrived, I was working on not too much sleep and the effects of a fairly large number of mental to-do lists. I took off from Knoxville with two baggage-checked suitcases, a carryon roller-case, and a backpack. The flight to Washington was uneventful, as was the Washington airport itself. I had a several hour layover before flying to London, so I took the time to ... read more

Well, I will be adding in a proper entry again, hopefully soon. However, tonights project was using the campus comuters to take photos from my camera, back them up on my ipod, and make sure they were all turned the correct way. Currently I am dumping the whole lot of them from my week in France (and first day in Northern Ireland at Cat's house) into a new photobucket account, MCAllenPics at: http://s226.photobucket.com/albums/dd142/MCAllenPics/ I didn't bother to sort out good from bad or do captions. So your welcome to peruse at your own risk of bordom and/or confusion. Also, note that they post themselves in reverse order, and that you may want to hit "refresh" after using the link in order to ensure all the pictures are displayed. Peace, Allen... read more
