Western Wanderings

M E Grow

After finishing up eight years of higher education, this 20-something is hitting the road! It'll be a month long affair of crashing with friends, visiting relatives, and rolling across the western parts of this big country. Hopefully it will culminate in finding the perfect apartment in Minneapolis (I'm not putting any pressure on myself!).

6,500 miles
33 days
17 states
1 amazing adventure (I hope!)

Life on the island was good. I kinda just hung out, saw the sights and played with the kid. Easy enough! My first day there I went over to Port somethin'-er-other to see the touristy stuff over there. We had pretty good pizza, awesome hot chocolate, and hit up a few stores. On the way back to the house we stopped off to see rosie the whale and rudy the dall's porpoise. Well, we saw their bones. Apparently, if an aquatic mammal beaches itself on Whidbey Island they like to hang up their skeleton. It was kinda neat, but weird at the same time. After that we got ice cream and then went home and crashed, enjoying the last kid free evening of my stay there. The next day started off nice and lazy, at least ... read more

I left the relaxation of Tigard to head further north to Washington (specifically Whidbey Island). After a relatively short drive I stopped at Pike Place Market, in Seattle. Got a mocha at the first ever Starbucks (tasted the same) and wandered around the shops. Found a few christmas presents (no telling what they are...the recipients might be reading!). I got back on the road after i spent just a little bit too much money. The trip up to the island was mostly uneventful. Saw a fun sign that apparently is put up by an extreme right winger that I somehow actually agreed with. Go fig. My issuses didn't start until I got closer to the island. I ran into a road block just east of the ferry and had to be talked back to the right ... read more

Today was nice and chill. Good way to warm up back into the roadtrippin' mode. Went shopping for a little while, visited some people, then rounded out the day w/ some pupusas (yeah El Salvadoran food!). They were lovely, although the fried plantains were highlight of my meal. seriously, the only thing I like more than plantains is mango. Mmmmm...mango... We came back home and watched the Tonys. I think I saw one of my friends, who was doing the seat filler thing. And I saw my other friend's name in the credits (didn't see her title...i think it was along the lines of production assistant). Back on the road tomorrow for a short hop up to Washington. We'll see how much time I can kill on this trip!... read more

Since the drive up to Oregon was relatively short, I had time to wander around Crescent City for a little while and see the sights. My host, turned tourguide, took me to all the hotspots. I got a nice picture of the local lighthouse (there are 2 in the area, but the other is way out at sea), but we couldn't get closer because the tide was in. Yes, access to the lighthouse is "tide permitting" due to a land bridge that gets completely covered by water when the tide rolls in. It's also too close to the shore and too rocky to allow boat access. So, no lighthouse tour for me. Then we headed over to a restaurant called the Chart Room. We didn't go in, though. Instead, we went around back and watched the ... read more

I felt a lot better in the morning. Dunno what it was the night before, but some cola and a good night’s sleep (sleeping in an extra 2 hours) did the trick! Mom and I checked out of the hotel and then went our separate ways; her on a taxi to the airport, me back in my car and further up the coast. It was good to get some personal space back. The drive up to Crescent City was really nice. I went through a bit of the wine country, with vines stretching out for rows and rows. Then I entered the National Redwood Forest. Wow. It was like driving through another world at some points. The best part was when there was a 2 mile stretch where the trees were so tall and so close ... read more

Today we got an early start and drove up the California coast on Highway 1. San Luis Obispo to Monterey on a mostly 2 lane, very curvy highway. Thankfully, there wasn’t a lot of traffic, so we didn’t get stuck behind anyone. The combination of tight curves and a sheer drop-off one lane away made Mom pretty skiddish of the drive. I loved it, though! It was like a game, trying to take the curves just slow enough that Mom wouldn’t freak, but fast enough that they felt like I had to work for them. Have I mentioned yet that I love to drive? Anyway, we made a couple stops along the way. One was at the Whale Watcher Café in Gorda. We grabbed some food and I got some really cool flower pics. We also ... read more

The first part was pretty fun. We were still up in the mountains/hills west of Flagstaff and started to come down. That made for some fun driving, aka truck dodging. Now, I understand that they’re trying to save on gas by getting everything out of a downhill they can. It’s still damn scary when you’re driving along and a semi comes racing up on your rear and you can’t get over because of the traffic! I was wishing for flatter ground every time that happened. Be careful what you wish for. We dropped out of the hills right into desert, with mountains off in the distance. It got really boring, really fast. I think the 7 mile long construction zone, where we were going 45mph through very repetitive terrain, was the height of boredom on this ... read more

Today's big adventure -Grand Canyon! A little back story - Mom and I have been on the road for 2 solid days, mostly in the rather toasty desert. This means air conditioning in the car. Really, not enough to aclimate. The forecast for the South Rim was a high of 88 degrees. I can handle the warmer stuff as long as I'm hydrated, but Mom has serious issues with the heat. This being said... Our plan was to explore as long as Mom held out, then go back to the National Geographic visitor center to watch the IMAX film about the Canyon. Then we were going to head back up to watch the sunset from one of the western facing points. Problem #1 - Mom didn't last too long in the exploring dept, so we only ... read more

We woke up to a sunny day, without a clue of the evil that would present itself in a short time. Blissfully unaware, Mom and I headed to the deluxe continental breakfast. They weren’t lying, it was deluxe. There were waffle makers and biscuits & gravy. The only thing missing was skim milk. Had to choke down the 2%. Blech! Dressed and ready to go (including my Target argyle flip-flops), I headed out to load the car (notice a trend here?). I was nearly done, taking one of the last loads out, when I went down. Hard. It seems that there was a chunk of pavement missing where I stepped. My foot rolled onto my ankle, and into the hole, and I landed smack on my knees. Somehow I kept enough composure to keep from swearing ... read more
