We entered Malaysia after a long day traveling through the south of Thailand. We could tell immediately that we were in a different country, it feels more developed with it's complex road systems and newer modernised buildings. Our first stop was the small western island of Penang where we spent a few days in it's main city of Georgetown. A kaleidoscope of cultures fuse together in Georgetown to create this diverse little place; a mixture of Malay, Indian and Chinese communities roll into one. Taking a walk through the streets of Georgetown feels like you are passing through 3 different countries. One moment you will be wandering past the peaceful, incense lined paths of Chinatown when suddenly you turn into the next street to be bombarded with bollywood beats being blared out of huge speakers and ... read more

Asia April 30th 2011

After our epic few days exploring the depths of Ko Tao, we all headed to Ko phan gnan. We wanted a relaxed beach, away from all the crowds heading to the full moon party, so we decided to head to the North of the island. Here we met Lucy's mum and dad. They had found a lovely beach and hotel and had booked us in for a night..... When we arrived we couldn't believe what we were seeing! The most amazing hotel situated on quite possibly  one of the nicest beaches we had ever seen! Absolute paradise. The beach was set in a little bay, surrounded by lush green forest that sat perfectly against the stunning bright blue waters. Long boats sat swaying on the waves creating the most idyllic picture perfect setting! And to make ... read more

Asia » Thailand April 27th 2011

The past three weeks have flown by far too quickly! We have had an awesome "holiday" in the middle of our trip, we've seen so much, relaxed so much, and loved every minute of it!  At first however we weren't sure if we would make it to the southern islands, they were struck by severe floods and the government was advising against all non essential travel to the area, at one point we were thinking we would have to fly elsewhere. But after long debates and worries over the weather it eventually cleared up had we great fun in the sun in the accompanied by friends and family!  After arriving from Vietnam, we met Ben in Bangkok and decided to go to Ko Chang, a small island 6hours from Bangkok near the border with Cambodia. At this ... read more

Our bus ride back from Halong City was one huge debate as to whether to travel to Sapa or not that evening. We were continuously changing our minds, one minute we were going, the next we weren't! We had 4 days before our flight so to get an overnight train to spend one night in Sapa and then travel back the following night seemed a bit rushed. We finally made the decision not to go.... 4 hours later we were sat in the train station.  It was definitely worth the effort. Although very touristy, Sapa was gorgeous, valley upon valley of rice terraces high up in the mountains with surrounding mountains poking up through the clouds everywhere you looked. With only 2 days to see the area we booked onto a trek for 9am (after arriving ... read more

The next stop on our Vietnamese route was Halong bay. We decided to this differently to the standard tourist tour from Hanoi and instead stayed on Cat Ba island ,the only inhabitable island within the Halong bay NP. Cat Ba was brilliant, really prehistoric looking with mountains and karsts filled with impenetrable jungle, just great!  The majority of the island is made up of the Cat Ba national park and we had read about a "challenging 18km trek" that cuts right through it so we booked onto one straight away! Although tough in parts the trek was amazing, the forest is so dense still and full of wildlife. Our one wish was to see a Cat Ba langur (they are endemic to the island and there are only 62 left in the wild) but we knew ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué April 24th 2011

Hue..... We spent a couple of days here and it rained non stop! We arrived in the afternoon after spending the day traveling. We had read that the train ride between Danang and Hue is meant to be stunning so we got off the bus in Danang, caught a moto to the train station and booked the cheapest seats possible! The journey was fun, the carriage smelt of wee and the locals were all eating dried fish so the smell wasn't great but the views were impressive and we had a great time chatting to the Vietnamese family sat with us. It felt good to get off a tourist bus and travel the way the Vietnamese do, it turns a boring journey into an experience, we had been getting so bored of tourist buses so we ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An April 1st 2011

Hoi an.... Cool, calm and colourful, old rustic buildings line the small roads and tiny walkways that only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to venture down. Street sellers sell corn drinks and  donuts and the market is alive with every food type imaginable; squashed mangled pigs heads to metre long cucumbers! It is a gorgeous place.... That  is until the tourists arrive and the town turns into one huge bustling sales pitch! 'hey mister, you look in my shop, you buy suit'! That is when this place becomes dangerous... One pair of shoes turns into three and the idea of designing your own tailor made dress is just too tempting! We told ourselves we would be sensible, just a suit for rikki (that he had been planning on getting for ages) and just a dress for ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Central Highlands » Lam Dong » Da Lat March 15th 2011

One of our favourite places so far. Cool, calm and charming, Dalat is like no where else we have been. As it is in the Central Highlands, it has completely different scenery. Conifers replace palm trees, mountains replace long stretches of sand, and cool evenings replace the hot, humid ones. The air temperature here was much cooler yet the sun was still as hot as ever, but just that slight difference made walking around a lot easier. The hills however did not, and we spent ages walking up and down them. The town is situated around a beautiful lake (which looked smaller than it was), and we spent the afternoon wandering around it, stopping off at a well kept flower park along the way. The park had some lovely views as well as cheap yummy ice-cream ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Binh Thuan » Mui Ne March 15th 2011

Mui Ne is a small beach town on the east coast and is described as 'the best all round beach in the country' so we had high hopes for the place... Unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations! The town has been taken over by big resorts and is over-run with Russian holiday makers! In between the resorts and russians however, It does have a great kite surfing and windsurfing scene, which we spent most of our time watching, in awe of the kite surfers stunts! To have a great kite surfing scene you obviously need a lot of wind which Mui Ne had in abundance. This was great for the surfers but not so great for us! We couldn't sit on the beach because it was like a sand storm, it would have been ... read more

Asia March 15th 2011

Ho Chi Minh. Wow. What a place! We were warned about the traffic, but nothing could prepare us for the chaos of Saigon! It was crazy, crossing the road felt like a game every time, with moto riders brushing shoulders with you as they whiz past... a little too close for comfort! We were told that 5 million mopeds apparently occupy the city's roads! After a days practice we eventually had it mastered; you literally have to step out into the oncoming traffic and walk as slowly and as steadily as you can. Eye contact and sudden movements are a definite no no, as it throws the drivers off course. We found a reasonably priced guest house, with the help of a ruthless tourist helper employed by the city, which was situated through a few small ... read more
