Our next big event of the Buddha to Bollywood trip involved crossing the border between Nepal and India by road. A short drive, this time in two small jeeps (further on there was a bridge that could only take smaller vehicles), took us to a VERY busy border crossing point. Lorries were backed up waiting to get into India (apparently they can only cross between certain times). We had to walk to the Nepal exit office to fill out our departure forms and get our passports stamped then we walked through the huge archway into no-man's land - about a 200m strip. Who had duristiction here we didn't know so we imagined people luring victims here to commit unpunishable crimes! And so we stepped over the dotted line. Then it was through the huge welcome to ... read more

Manu had decided it was to be an early start - supposedly to avoid the early morning traffic getting out of Kathmandu. Obviously it wasn't early enough as we spent the next TWO hours sat in a traffic jam!! We would cheer as the coach inched forward a metre and propose visits to yoga classes, hair salons etc to relieve the tedium! But eventually we painfully made our way to the cross roads - the cause of all the problems - and left Kathmandu behind. We were following the same road I'd taken on the trip to Chitwan National Park so as I'd seen it all before I plugged myself into my MP3 player and settled down for the long journey. After a very bumpy, dusty ride we finally ended up in Lumbini at the Hotel ... read more

Having said my farewells to my Nepal Panorama trip friends I arrived at my meeting point hotel, the Kathmandu Prince, to meet my new travel companions. For the first part of the tour until Delhi there are just 8 of us plus our tour leader Manu. I'm sharing with an Aussie girl called Sammy - one of the first things I found out about her is how much she loves Kathmandu - I find this fascinating as I can't wait to leave the place and head off for India. People are so different. There are 2 more Aussies in the group, honey-moon couple Janine and Carl (good job they didn't do the trekking in the Tea Houses with paper thin walls!). Incidentally we met another honey-moon couple on the Everest flight who said they had only ... read more

Chitwan National Park We were in for a long, dusty ride down from Pokhara to Chitwan National Park in the south but the changing scenary kept me entertained along the way. We also had a luxurious (in comparison to the minibus) coach to spread out in which made things a lot more comfortable. There were actually seat belts and even the chance to watch a DVD - strangley no-one was interested in watching the only choice - Cannonball Run! The driver was also a lot better and took great care to avoid any bumps and ruts in the road (not for our sake you understand - this coach was his pride and joy!). The scenary along the way started to change from mountains to hills to plains. We travelled for a long while by a huge ... read more

With 2 full free days in Pokhara we set off early to peruse the shops, buy presents, postcards, posters etc. Then me and Linda went down to the lake and hired a wooden rowing boat and man to paddle us and spent a blissful, relaxing, peaceful hour out on the water enjoying the view and taking more photos. We saw paragliders up in the skies with the snow capped mountains as a back drop. They were sooo high up (more of this later!). Then it was back to the hotel to christen the pool, laze about sun bathing, drinking beers, listening to music, reading, having another swim, drinking more beer. Heaven! A little Nepalese boy came called Shankar came over and we got chatting. He was such a clever one. He could read and write English ... read more

Day 7 - Banthanti to Pokhara There's not much to say about this day's trek except it was VERY long and was taking us away from our beloved mountains. The day was extremely hot and the steps down were relentless. Luckily I've got quite good at these so for the first part of the day was able to skip along down quite easily, but the heat of the day and the lack of stops soon started to take it's toll. We would turn each corner hoping that Krishna, Marc and Phil had stopped but no such luck. It was obviously going to be a long hard slog. It was only the thought of an ice cold coke that kept me going toward the end as step after step banged our aching knees. After hours of this ... read more

Day 6 - Poon Hill and Ghorepani to Banthanti I was awake early for the start of our VERY EARLY hike up Poon Hill to watch the sunrise. A bleary eyed, head torch wearing group set off in the dark. What a strange sight it was. We discovered that Ghorepani must have a hell of a lot of accomodation as there were what seemed like hundreds of people all processing up the steep stone steps in single file. The steps were huge and it was hard going as there was a pretty important deadline to hit - SUNRISE. So everyone was pushing themselves really hard to make it up in time. Falsh summit after false summit but eventually after a tough 50 minute climb the watch tower came into sight and we all gathered in a ... read more

Day 5 - Tadapani to Ghorepani (2,860m) After yet another yummy breakfast we waddled out of the Tea House several pounds heavier and started our trek off up into the forest. Today was a 6 hour trek with lots of up (there's a surprise), but we still had plenty of time along the way to enjoy the views and do a spot of bird watching and plant ID. Every so often we would get a glimpse of the pristine white mountains through the trees and would grab for the cameras yet again. I don't think I could ever tire of these views. It was lovely to enjoy the coolness of the forest and trekking was easier because of it. We were following the path of a river below us and as we started to climb higher ... read more

Day 4 - Ghandruk to Tadapani (2,590m) We set of from our Tea House for a much shorter trek this morning heading for Tadapani. This trekking was very different from the previous day as we entered lush sub-tropical forests of mainly rhodedendrons dripping with moss and ferns. Having spent many a day hacking down and burning the smaller, invasive varieties that are taking over our British countryside it was nice to see them growing where they are meant to be! There were loads in blossom in a deep pinking red colour. We also saw tiny mauve primula, mahonia, ferns and mosses and daphne growing beneath the canopy of trees. Daphne used by the mountain people for either making paper or for use as rope. The outside of the stems are peeled back then the inside peeled ... read more

Day 3 - Tolka to Ghandruk (1,940m) Breakfast at 7.15am this morning with wonderful, stupendous views of the mountains. This time I sampled the corn bread to accompany my boiled eggs. It was puffed up bread with a slight flavour of donuts - so no complaints there. This was followed by appe/banana pancakes. Slightly more than my normal breakfast of one weatabix!! We always get black tea too (milk is a bit dodgey up here so we've been avoiding) and I'm starting to get an aquired taste for it. Those of you who know my normal tea drinking habits will be falling about in shock right now as I usually just wave a tea bag in the general direction of the cup and add LOADS of milk! If I seem to be going on about food ... read more
